AMPA, Fla. — Tampa police have charged a mother with first-degree murder after police say she drowned her daughter in the Hillsborough River, killing her.Shakayla Denson, 26, has been arrested and charged with first-degree felony murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of 4-year-old Je'Hyrah Daniels. She also faces a charge of grand theft auto.Denson made a first appearance in court on Friday morning.  A judge set no bond on the charges of murder and child abuse.Tampa Police officers responded around 4:06 p.m. local time Thursday after receiving reports of a woman who drowned a child in the river just north of the Columbus Drive bridge. The dive team also responded to the scene where they pulled Je'Hyrah from the water around 4:30 p.m. She was discovered approximately 75 feet from the shore. Emergency services rushed her to St. Joseph's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.  Police say Denson was located walking nearby when they took her into custody. Investigators say Denson had just stolen a car - a grey Nissan Altima - from a nearby auto repair shop. She parked the car on Rome Avenue just north of Aileen Street. Witness AccountsAccording to an arrest affidavit released Friday morning, two witnesses said Denson "forcefully pushed Je'Hyrah into the back seat of the Nissan Altima." One of the witnesses attempted to stop Denson from leaving but was struck by the Altima as she left. Two other witnesses told police they saw Denson near Aileen St W and Rome Avenue N where she "forcefully removed Je'Hyrah from the back seat of the Altima by the arm." They said as Denson pulled Je'Hyrah she was "screaming loudly and not cooperating." Denson then went into the Hillsborough River while holding both of Je'Hyrah's arm until the water reached her shoulders.Vicki Walker lives on the 3rd floor of the Dockside Condos in Tampa, directly facing where police say Je'Hyrah was drowned.She told said that she never saw the child, but spotted a woman walking out of water not long before police arrived.“Which was very odd, I’ve lived here for years, I’ve never seen anybody in the river," she said.Walker took a photo of the woman in the river.Walker says that the woman was by herself and that she watched her walk out of the river onto the bank, where she says the woman sat for a while.“There’s a part of me that’s like ‘oh my gosh, why didn’t I run over there? Why didn’t I talk to this person? They have been living in the rural home for about a year. They were told it was built by a bootlegger, but they didn’t believe it until their recent renovation brought out the truth.“I was in the process of removing this rotted wood skirting that went around the mudroom sort of where the foundation would be if it was a truly finished structure, and as I’m peeling back the boards on one of the sides, all of the sudden all this hay falls out and I was very confused," Drummond said. "And at first I was like ‘oh this must be insulation’ – of course all this is taking place within a few seconds in my head – and then I look and I’m like ‘well wait a second, what’s that glass thing?'""And then I pull it up and I’m looking at this old liquor bottle, and then I’m looking at the other package and there’s these other little tops poking out of the hay, and then I look back at the wall and there’s like the edge of this other package tied up with string and I’m like ‘holy crap, this is like a stash of booze,’” Drummond said.Sixty-six bottles of Gaelic whisky from the prohibition era were hidden for nearly a century within the walls and floorboards of a little shack tacked onto the side of the house, originally used as a mudroom to store coats and shoes.“It was like you found the jackpot," Bakker said. According to newspapers of the time, he was the talk of the town and involved in a lot of scandal. But I’m just imagining this tall, heavy set German guy walking around in a buffalo robe surrounded by dozens of cash registers. Ya know it’s fantastic, I love it, I love thinking about that.”As they continue renovating the house, Drummond and Bakker say they want to preserve its incredible history.“Every building has a story to tell," Drummond said. "And it’s really a matter of peeling back all the different parts and pieces and sort of analyzing them. Apple announced on Friday that it is planning to temporarily close several of its locations in four states as the number of coronavirus cases in some US states are surging.Apple said that two stores in Florida, two in North Carolina, one in South Carolina and six in Arizona will be closed until further notice.
