SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children in San Diego could soon go without food if the federal government doesn't extend waivers put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The San Diego Unified School District is warning about that possibility after the U.S. Department of Agriculture ended supplemental food support for local families. The changes are expected at the end of September. The USDA decided they would end the supplemental support during the pandemic. After Sept. 30, families will be required to verify identification, proof of school attendance and eligibility to quality for the free family meals. These things were waived in March because of the pandemic. SD Unified officials say the USDA hasn't responded to their request to extend the waivers. District officials are taking steps to try and fill in the gaps by working with partners like the San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego. The district also announced triple the distribution sites, up from 28 to 82. Students or their parents/guardians who qualify for subsidized meals can drive through or walk up to receive breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, from noon to 2 p.m. during the 2020-21 school year, which begins on Aug. 31.The district is also offering assistance to any family that needs help completing the required forms. The district says they have distributed more than 4 million meals to students since March. They say these meals are often the only quality meal they receive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities in California have identified the sailor who died after being struck by a spinning helicopter blade as 32-year-old Lt. James Mazzuchelli.Mazzuchelli was a flight surgeon assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39 and was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton.Mazzuchelli is from Orange Park, Florida and was previously deployed to Japan.“Lt. James Mazzuchelli was an incredibly talented physician and Sailor,” said Col. Matthew Mowery, commanding officer of MAG-39. “His contagious enthusiasm, motivation, and love for the Marines and Sailors of HMLA-267 and MAG-39 has been evident in the outpouring of grief at his loss and the support being shown to his family and close friends. His willingness to join the Navy and elect to serve faithfully with the Marines should give a sense of pride to all of us who serve our country that we are surrounded by heroes every day. James and his contribution to our Corps will be sorely missed."The sailor died Saturday morning after being hit by the spinning tail rotor blade of a UH-01Y Venom Marine helicopter.The incident is currently under investigation. 1182

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Concerns continue to grow after the Del Mar coastline collapses three times in a matter of weeks.Large parts of the cliffs, between 8th and 11th streets, have come tumbling down to the shore. “Parts of the cliffs are still unstable but it’s difficult to tell when exactly that failure, or additional failures, may occur,” says Adam Young.Young is a Project Scientist with Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He says the timing of the collapses is unusual.“We see this activity in the winter time when we have a lot of rain. you can get a lot of land sliding but to have something in the summer time is quite unusual.”Scripps is continuing to monitor the coastline. In a statement from Del Mar City Councilman Terry Sinnott it says in part:“First, we working with SANDAG on a project called Del Mar Bluff #4 that will be built in early 2019 that will improve the drainage coming off the developed properties to the East. Second, there is a long-term solution which is to move the train tracks off the bluffs."Young also advises beach goers to be aware of their surroundings near the cliffs and to adhere to signs that say do not enter.Following a recent bluff collapse, the Del Mar bluffs have been three dimensionally mapped. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As grocery stores work to fill consumer demand created by the coronavirus pandemic, several San Diego stores are hiring.Albertsons and Vons locations in the San Diego area are working to fill about 1,000 jobs, a spokesperson told 10News. So far, more than 200 of the positions have been filled and locations are actively conducting interviews.
