Public pools in the U.S. will look very different this summer if they open at all with the coronavirus threat still looming. Among the changes pools are planning are putting their mostly teenage lifeguards in charge of maintaining social distancing among patrons and spotting COVID-19 symptoms. Dr. Justin Sempsrott, the medical director for the lifeguard certification program Starguard Elite, says pools also plan to screen patrons' temperatures, require lifeguards to wear masks and significantly reduce the number of swimmers allowed in the water and locker rooms. Industry groups and companies, meanwhile, report that sales of inflatable pools, swimming gear and kayaks are up. 694

Students across the country are spelling their way to greatness in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Students are in the process of advancing from classroom to school to region to earn a spot in the national finals in National Harbor, Maryland, in May 2020. Spellers who win their school spelling bee but don’t advance past their region can keep their dream alive of competing in the national spotlight. For the third year in a row, the Bee is offering its RSVBee program. It is a participation pathway that qualifies more spellers for the national finals. It is the only way students living in unsponsored regions can advance and is an additional opportunity for the best spellers in the country to compete on the national stage. The Bee created RSVBee with an eye toward fairness, accessibility, maintaining the integrity of the competition and delivering a quality Bee Week experience for all. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has more than 250 sponsors across the country who support the program and make it possible for local students to advance. Still, there are unsponsored sections in the U.S., and some of its sponsored regions have grown so large and competitive that RSVBee is the Bee’s answer to address access and fairness. “We’ve known for many years that large numbers of excellent spellers have had limited access to the national finals or no pathway at all,” said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “We created RSVBee to address this very issue and make our iconic competition accessible to a wider population of children who love words and language and enjoy competitive spelling.” The Bee is narrowing the field of the national finals to about 400 competitors, down from last year’s 562, with the intent of providing spellers and their families with a more personalized, quality experience during Bee Week. Parents can apply on behalf of their child for one of about 140 total RSVBee invitations at 1975

Researchers from the British Psychological Society released a report last week challenging stereotypes on why people are obese. The report states that "obesity is not simply down to an individual’s lack of willpower." The report claims there are a number of circumstances, some of which beyond a person's control, for becoming obese. "The people who are most likely to be an unhealthy weight are those who have a high genetic risk of developing obesity and whose lives are also shaped by work, school and social environments that promote overeating and inactivity," the BPS report says. "People who live in deprived areas often experience high levels of stress, including major life challenges and trauma, often their neighborhoods offer few opportunities and incentives for physical activity and options for accessing affordable healthy food are limited.""Research evidence points strongly to genes being a major part of the explanation for why some people are more susceptible to becoming obese than others," the BPS report continues. The report comes as 40 percent of American adults are considered obese, according to CDC figures.Fat shaming does not workThree weeks ago, late night comedian Bill Maher gave a controversial dialog on obesity, which he admitted was "fat shaming." "Fat shaming doesn’t need to end it needs to make a comeback," he said. Maher added, "Being fat isn’t a birth defect. Nobody comes out of the womb needing to buy two seats on the airplane. Here it is in a nutshell from the New York Times: Poor Diet is the Leading Cause of Mortality in the United States. Everyone knows that obesity is linked to terrible conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and virginity.”Maher was criticized by some, including fellow late night comic James Corden. "“There’s a common and insulting misconception that fat people are stupid and lazy, and we’re not. We know that being overweight isn’t good for us and I’ve struggled my entire life trying to manage my weight and I suck at it. I’ve had good days and bad months," Corden said. According to the BPS research, fat shaming does not work. "Shame does not motivate people or help them to make sustainable changes to their lives. In fact, weight stigma perpetuates a cycle of shame and weight gain at all levels of obesity. As a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI) increases, so does their perception of discrimination towards them because of their weight," the study says.To read the full report, click 2475

Sports gambling giant DraftKings is reviewing a former "Bachelor” contestant's million win in an online fantasy football contest after she and her husband are accused of cheating. Jade Roper-Tolbert beat more than 100,000 entries to take the top prize in DraftKings' "Millionaire Maker" contest this past weekend. But some complained she'd colluded with her husband, Tanner Tolbert, who is a prolific fantasy sports player and fellow “Bachelor” alum. The couple submitted 300 entries into the contest, nearly all of them listing a unique lineup of players from the NFL’s four wild-card games. 607

South Dakota doesn't get a lot of tornadoes, but a twister there last weekend was particularly rare -- because it was spinning clockwise. The National Weather Service says the anticyclonic tornado only lasted for about 45 seconds on June 15. That was long enough for it to knock down seven trees at a farmstead outside of Estelline, which is about 80 miles north of Sioux Falls.Only about 1% of tornadoes that hit the Northern Hemisphere rotate in a clockwise direction, the National Weather service says. The weather service used radar data and video to make its determination about the South Dakota storm.Becky Bates shot one of those videos while chasing the storm with her family."It honestly didn't seem unusual to me," Bates told CNN. "This was my first catch. I just chase for fun. But it touched down a couple of times while we sat and watched."The tornado had estimated peak winds of 75 mph and its path was about one tenth of a mile long.It caused only relatively minor damage.
