PYONGYANG, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The torch relay in Pyongyang will enhance friendship between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and China, the DPRK's Olympic chief said Monday.     The event will promote the cooperation and exchanges in sports between the two countries, and will show their traditional friendship to the world, said Park Hak Seon, chairman of the National Olympic Committee of the DPRK.     The official made the remarks at a reception held by the Chinese Embassy to welcome the Beijing Olympic Flame to Pyongyang.     The reception was attended by senior DPRK officials, including Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, and Park Kwan O, chairman of the People's Committee of Pyongyang, foreign diplomats in Pyongyang and famous DPRK athletes.     Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK, expressed thanks to various departments of the DPRK for their hard work in preparing for the torch relay in Pyongyang.     He said he sincerely appreciates the strong support from the people of the DPRK to the Chinese people.     The Olympic torch which will be used to carry the sacred flame in Pyongyang was displayed at the reception.     The torch relay will be held on April 28 in Pyongyang, the 18thleg of its global trip. The preparations are going smoothly.     "The committee will try its best to ensure the torch relay in Pyongyang is the smoothest and safest one," Park Hak Seon said.

GUANGZHOU, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has praised Guangdong's pioneer role in the 30-year reform and opening drive and urged the south China province to continue promote cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions (SARs).     Guangdong played the role as a window, laboratory and pioneer in the construction and development of socialism with Chinese characteristics, said Xi during a study tour of the south China province on July 4 and 5.     Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, visited towns, enterprises, communities, ports and research institutions, with Guangdong Party chief Wang Yang and governor Huang Huahua.     Xi hailed Guangdong's economic and social development, highlighting the fact that only socialism could save China, only the reforms and opening up to the outside world could develop China, socialism and Marxism. BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday urged all the members of the Communist Party of China(CPC) to put people's interests first and learn the bitter lessons from the latest security incidents.     Addressing the opening ceremony of a seminar for the country's ministerial-level leaders in Beijing, Hu, also the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said that the major accidents on work and food safety which occurred in some places of the country this year had incurred severe losses of people's lives and property.     These accidents had indicated that some leaders lacked a sense of responsibility and had a loose governance, he said.     These accidents also showed some of the leaders paid no attention to people's problems and complaints and were insensitiveto the problems which threats people's life security, said Hu.     He urged all the leaders to fully understand the serious consequences of the accidents and learn the bitter lessons from the accidents.     Those accidents reminded us once again that only by solving the problems emerged from the Party leaders ... and putting people's interests first, could the Party better lead the people towards the building of a well-off society, Hu said.     The President also urged more efforts from the leaders to realize and safeguard the fundamental interests of the people.     Leaders should strive hard to do practical and good things for the people and ensure that people benefits from the country's developing economy, he noted.     More efforts should be made to mobilize people to be involved in the cause of the country's scientific development, and leaders should collect people's ideas and listen to their opinions in the process, he said.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Communist Party of China (CPC) chief Hu Jintao has urged Party members to learn the theory on socialism with Chinese characteristics more conscientiously.     Hu, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark at a seminar which was participated in Sunday afternoon by members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.     Prof. Yan Shuhan from the Party School of the CPC Central Committee and prof. Qin Xuan from the Renmin University of China delivered speeches at the seminar and put forward their views on applying the theory into practice.     Presiding over the seminar, Hu said the theory on socialism with Chinese characteristics is a fundamental guideline of the Party and government for social and economic construction.     Party members should understand the basic principles of the theory and use them in their practical work, he added.     Hu asked Party organs at all levels to make the theory accessible and understood by every Party member and draw long-term plans to promote and develop the theory.

CHENGDU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Rescue operation and disaster relief for victims in the worst earthquake over decades are of top priority of the nation, and thus require concerted efforts from the whole country, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday night.     Monday's 7.8-magnitude earthquake that ravaged southwestern Sichuan Province and was felt in most parts of the country was the "most destructive" tremor and had the "most wide-spreading impact" since New China was founded in 1949, Wen said on a meeting of the rescue headquarters under the State Council headed by himself.
