True to its fresh image, the list includes several words that, in this new political and social climate, have taken on a different meaning.Consider "troll."Originally, it was a noun used to describe a dwarf or giant in Scandinavian folklore. The new definition that Merriam-Webster added is a verb: "to antagonize (others) online by deliberately posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content."How about "dog whistle?"Once upon a time, it was what it said: a whistle for dogs inaudible to humans. In response to a growing trend on social media, the Food and Drug Administration published a public warning this week about the dangers of taking too much of an allergy medication, diphenhydramine, commonly known as Benadryl.“We are aware of news reports of teenagers ending up in emergency rooms or dying after participating in the “Benadryl Challenge” encouraged in videos posted on the social media application TikTok,” the statement reads.When a teen girl died in August in Oklahoma City, her family blamed the 15-year-old’s death on a Benadryl overdose. The family blamed a “challenge” on TikTok where participants take a dozen or so doses of the allergy medication to experience hallucinations.Earlier this year, there were reports out of Fort Worth, Texas that three teens became sick and had to be rushed to the hospital after taking large amounts of the medication. According to Newsweek, when they recovered, the teens told officers they had taken the allergy medication as part of the TikTok challenge.Taking more than the recommended dose of Benadryl “can lead to serious heart problems, seizures, coma, or even death,” the FDA states.“We are investigating these reports and conducting a review to determine if additional cases have been reported,” the FDA stated. “We also contacted TikTok and strongly urged them to remove the videos from their platform and to be vigilant to remove additional videos that may be posted.”Johnson & Johnson, who manufacture Benadryl, released a statement to media outlets stating, in part, “The health and safety of people who use our products is our top priority. The BENADRYL TikTok trend is extremely concerning, dangerous and should be stopped immediately.”The FDA reminds parents and caregivers to lock up medicines to prevent accidental overdoses. It is in Michigan, thanks to an old law.Some want to do away with the law that bans unmarried couples from living under the same roof.State Sen. Steve Bieda is leading the way to get ride of the antiquated law."It is actually one of the silliest laws we have on the books."The law was passed in 1931 to stop what it calls "gross lewdness." Unmarried, unrelated people of the opposite genders living together could face up to one year in prison and a ,000 fine.While it's hardly enforced, there is another reason to get it off the books."Because it's still statutory law, in certain tax situations, they have to consider that in doing their taxes."There have been unsuccessful attempts in the past to get rid of the law."It's an easy fix. There's a repealer statute in the senate committee. I'm hoping to get it out in the near future," Bieda added.Some say the law needs to go, but Michigan lawmakers should be focused on more important things.Mississippi is the only other state with a similar law, but lawmakers there are trying to do away with their law too. 1139
