LUQA, Malta, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- A chartered plane of China Eastern Airlines carrying 272 Chinese evacuees from Libya left Malta for Shanghai on Saturday.The Airbus A330-300 plane took off at 8:20 p.m. local time ( 1920 GMT) from the Malta International Airport, to be followed shortly by another chartered plane of China Eastern Airlines with 278 Chinese evacuees on board.The 550-strong Chinese nationals from a Chinese construction company were among a total of 2,216 people who arrived by a ship from violence-torn Libya at the Grand Harbor in Valletta, capital of Malta, on Saturday.In addition to the 2,216 Chinese nationals, the ship chartered by the Chinese embassy in Malta also carried dozens of citizens of other countries.The vessel, which was the first Maltese ship chartered by the Chinese government to evacuate Chinese nationals, left Libya's Benghazi on Friday.Maltese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, who went aboard the ship, expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for helping to evacuate some Maltese nationals from Libya.Chinese Ambassador to Malta Zhang Keyuan also thanked the Maltese government for its cooperation in the evacuation of Chinese nationals.A 19-day-old baby was among the evacuated Chinese, said a source with the Chinese embassy.China Eastern Airlines will fly four planes every day to the Mediterranean island nation from Feb. 28 to March 10, as part of all-round airborne evacuation missions aimed at taking stranded Chinese citizens back home as soon as possible, according to information from an emergency meeting of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in Beijing on Saturday.

ZHENGZHOU, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's Yellow River catchment authority has launched emergency measures to restrict industrial water usage and to release reservoir water for wheat crops in the face of a worsening drought.The Yellow River Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters raised on Wednesday its drought alert from yellow to orange, the second-highest level, indicating the area is facing the worst drought in up to half a century.The headquarters ordered all authorities along the catchment area to initiate an emergency response to ensure water supplies for people and livestock, and to restrict industrial water consumption.The drought, which has plagued the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River since October last year, was likely to affect more than 40 percent of crops in the area, said a headquarters spokesman.Light to moderate snowfall brought some relief to the wheat farmers in the region over the weekend, but not enough to end the drought. HOUSTON, April 15 (Xinhua) -- A major contractor for the U.S. space shuttle on Friday announced plans to lay off about 50 percent of its employees this summer after NASA retires the orbiter fleet.The contractor, Houston-based United Space Alliance, said it will cut 2,600 to 2,800 jobs, including 1,850 to 1,950 employees in Florida, 750 to 800 employees in Texas, and 30 to 40 employees in Alabama, "due to the completion of tasks related to day-to-day operations of the Shuttle fleet."The cuts will be made in late July and early August after NASA completes the final flight of Endeavour, scheduled for April 29, and the flight of Atlantis on June 28."The accomplishments of this team are unmatched in human spaceflight," Virginia Barnes, the company's president, said in a news release.
