LUANDA, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said here on Thursday that China would help Angola in diversifying its exports to China as part of the efforts to boost trade relations between the two countries.Zhong made the pledge during his meeting with Angolan Minister of Trade Maria Idalina Valente to explore ways of further expanding trade and economic ties between the two countries.Zhong said China has attached importance to developing ties with Angola, the largest trading partner of China in Africa, and the 2010 visit to Angola by Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping brought Sino-Angolan ties to new highs. The Chinese official said crude oil was almost the sole product of Angola which ended up in Chinese markets despite the fact that trade volume between the two countries amounted to some 25 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, and the Chinese government has decided to reduce or waive tariffs on Angolan exports to China from January 1, 2011 to encourage Angolan businessmen to export more products to China, including agricultural produces, fish and other marine products and diamonds.Zhong said China and Angola have made substantial progress in bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, basic infrastructures and agriculture, and the Chinese government has encouraged Chinese enterprises to invest in Angola and make technological transfers to the African country as well. For her part, Maria Idalina Valente said Angola welcomed China's proposal to expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation on the basis of the strategic partnerships hammered out during Xi Jinping's visit to Angola. The Angolan minister said the biggest challenge faced by her government is to diversify its oil-dependent economy and to build up industrial and manufacturing capabilities in the national economy. She said Angola is trying to improve its investment conditions and hopes to reach an agreement with China on the protection of investments by the year 2012.The minister said her country is also keen on learning from China's development experiences in setting up special economic zones and zones of processing products for exports.Zhong arrived in Luanda earlier in the day for a two-day work visit to the African country.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and EU leaders on Tuesday signed a first joint declaration on strengthening dialogue and cooperation on youth issues as the 2011 EU-China Year of Youth kicked off here.Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said at the opening ceremony that the year would open up new horizons for young people from Europe and China by enabling them to share experiences and learn from each other."I hope that such exchanges will inspire concrete ideas for cooperation and establish long-lasting partnerships," Vassiliou said. The opening ceremony was the first of a series of exchange activities to be held throughout the year in Europe and China. The EU-China Year of Youth was jointly initiated by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso at the 12th EU-China summit held in 2009."The Year will provide an interactive platform for European and Chinese young people to enhance mutual understanding and friendship through creativity, tolerance and openness. We hope they can open a new page of people-to-people contacts between Europe and China," said Wang Xiao, President of the All-China Youth Federation.Wang led a delegation of 100 Chinese young people who arrived in Brussels earlier this week to meet with their 100 European counterparts for the first time. The 200 young representatives from the EU and China also exchanged ideas on a variety of issues including volunteering, mobility, culture and creativity prior to the opening ceremony. Those from China will also visit the European Parliament, the College of Europe and EU's Court of Justice later this week. The yearlong program, co-hosted by the European Commission and the All-China Youth Federation, aims to promote intercultural dialogue and strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between European and Chinese youth, as well as encourage young people to care about and support the development of EU-China relations. The EU-China Year of Youth also coincides with the European Year of Volunteering and the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteering, thus voluntary activities involving young Europeans and Chinese will be encouraged throughout the Year. With Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang wrapping up his three- nation Europe tour on Wednesday, the Sino-EU relation has had a good start this year in terms of political mutual trust and economic cooperation, while the kick-off of the EU-China Year of Youth is expected to break new ground in all-round exchanges among young people."The EU and China are now more than just trading partners, but also strategic partners. We should work together for a future of prosperity," said Ambassador Song Zhe, Head of the Mission of China to the European Union.
BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Remote villages across Yongning County of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have been connected to a safe water supply thanks to a newly-completed water project. The project, launched in August 2010 and concluded on Nov. 27, has ensured that 100,000 people in 44 villages of Yongning will have access to safe water for drinking.People in the county had long suffered from a severe shortage of safe water because the area's surface water contained excessive amounts of fluorin and iron. The project was initiated after local authorities increased their efforts to provide safe drinking water after Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the region.During an inspection to a well-drilling site at Yuanlin Village of southern Yongning on March 23, 2010, President Hu stressed that efforts be made to ensure more people have access to safe water supplies.
