POWAY, CA (KGTV) - A post office in Poway could soon be named after Ray Chavez, who was the oldest living Pearl Harbor survivor when he passed away in 2018.Wednesday, California Representative Scott Peters will announce legislation to make the change. He says it's backed by every member of California's Congressional delegation.Chavez served in the Navy and was stationed on the USS Condor minesweeper on December 7, 1941. After the Japanese fighter planes attacked, he spent 9 days searching the water for enemy subs and wreckage of sunken US ships.Over the last few years, Chavez had been a staple of WWII and Pearl Harbor commemoration ceremonies, even flying to Washington DC to meet with President Trump in the spring of 2018.He passed away in November of 2018.RELATED: Oldest Pearl Harbor survivor dies at 106It takes an act of Congress to name a Post Office. In a news release, Peters' office says that a handful of local leaders from the City of Poway, the Post Office and military groups will gather at the Post Office on Midland Road to show their support and urge Congress to approve the change."He didn’t grab the spotlight, the spotlight came to him," says Mark Balmert, the President of the San Diego Military Advisory Council. "He accepted that, and he did a great job of telling people what it was like to be part of the Greatest Generation."RELATED: Oldest Pearl Harbor survivor laid to restPeople in Poway say they'll be proud to go to a Post Office named after a local hero."Every day people will see his name there," says Karen Simonich. "He’s a survivor who lived a long life. It’s an honor for him and I think people will appreciate his name being remembered that way.""It’s terrific," says Len Holyk. "It's a big honor for him and his family and for all the vets out there that served the country."Balmert says he hopes the change will inspire more people to learn about Chavez and the legacy of WWII Veterans."He was always proud to be an American and proud to serve and very humble about it," says Balmert. 2041

Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution was associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder, a new study finds. Pregnant women in Vancouver who were exposed to the highest level of environmental nitric oxide, an airborne, traffic-related pollutant, were more likely to give birth to children later diagnosed with autism, the researchers say.Autism spectrum disorder, a developmental disability, is characterized by problems with communication and social interaction with accompanying repetitive behavior patterns.Lief Pagalan, lead author of the study and a member of the faculty of health sciences at Simon Fraser University, cautions that the study, published Monday in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics, showed only an association between prenatal exposure to nitric oxide and autism rates. It did not prove that air pollution caused autism.Experts emphasize that the exact causes of autism remain unknown, and some say the researchers in this study did not analyze every potential risk factor.Still, the research "adds to the growing concern that there may be no safe levels of exposure to air pollution," Pagalan wrote in an email."Not only did we have access to rich data, enabling us to develop one of the largest studies to date, but we were also able to conduct this study in a city with relatively lower levels of air pollution," he said. 1375

President Donald Trump announced Friday he will deliver a commencement speech at the United States Naval Academy next month."So exciting! President Donald Trump had lunch with National Rifle Association leaders Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox over the weekend, he said Monday. The President also said state governors should not be "afraid" of the NRA's lobbying power. The lunch was announced by the President during a meeting with governors at the White House Monday morning. The White House did not previously announce the meeting or provide a readout.Trump defended the NRA, saying the gun-rights group wants to act."There's no bigger fan of the 2nd Amendment than me and there's no bigger fan of the NRA, and these guys are great patriots they're great people, and they want to do something," the President said."They're going to do something -- and they're going to do it, I think, quickly -- I think they want to see it," he added.Trump told the governors not to be afraid of the NRA, but also said it was OK to fight them every once in a while."Don't worry about the NRA, they're on our side," Trump said. "Half of you are so afraid of the NRA, there's nothing to be afraid of.""And you know what, if they're not with you, we have to fight them every once in a while. That's OK. They're doing what they think is right," he added.Cox is the executive director of the NRA's lobbying arm, the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. LaPierre is the NRA's CEO. Trump said he also met with David Lehman of the NRA-ILA.  1389

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Poway residents are expressing concern after Stoneridge Country Club closed without notice Wednesday morning. The club closed after voters defeated a measure Tuesday which would have rezoned the property to allow owner Michael Schlesinger to replace part of the club with 180 new condos. One member told 10News "I want the people of Poway to realize that it’s not just about losing golf. It’s about our home values and losing our history that we’ve had here for so long.”Her home sits directly adjacent to the course. She's concerned Schlesinger will stop maintaining the property, turning it into a major fire hazard.Several other residents also expressed worries about vagrants setting up camps on the vacant course and that overgrowth could lead to a spread of coyotes in the area. Those fears are stoked, the residents say, by what has happened at the Escondido Country Club, also owned by Schlesinger. The club has gone to waste in the four years since he made the decision to close it and Poway residents worry they're about to be victims of the same fate.Club members tell 10News there has been no communication from Stoneridge about the closure. Many members paid their 2018 dues in advance and fear Schlesinger will not refund their money.10News contacted a spokesperson for Schlesinger, who replied with a statement:"We are on day 2 of the process of closing a business that has been open for 60 years. Our employees were our first concern, and now we are just beginning to figure out details. On the issue of maintenance, the property will be secured for trespass and follow all appropriate, applicable guidelines." 1653
