There are creatures that have been in this country longer than man, and there are those that are fighting to make sure they stay as long as man plans to. In the small town of Divide, Colorado there’s a wolf sanctuary called Colorado Wolf and Wildlife center. “We focus on education, conservation and preservation of wolves,” says Darlene Koboble, the CEO and director of Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center. “I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be working with wolves. It basically started with one wolf-dog that I rescued from a shelter from being euthanized, because she had part wolf in her. When I rescued her, she was my inspiration to be a voice for wolves, because they’ve been one of the most persecuted animals in history.”The gray wolf has been classified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an endangered species throughout the country since 1978. According to Fish and Wildlife Service, there were only around 1,000 gray wolves at the time, mostly in Minnesota. Today, there are more than 5,000 across the country, but there are disagreements on whether this number defines the population as recovered. “There is a big gap of wolves right now, and that gap is Colorado,” says Rob Edward of the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project (RMWP). “Colorado has one of the biggest deer populations, but it’s missing it’s primary top-level carnivore.”Edward said the RMWP’s primary goal is to introduce the gray wolf back into Colorado, which is on the state’s 2020 ballot. “They are as important to the forest of the west as a wildfire,” Edward says. “Without them, our wild places are impoverish.” In 2011, the gray wolf was dropped from the endangered list in Idaho and Montana. Wyoming also lost federal protections of gray wolves. Now, the Trump administration will seek to end those federal protections nationwide across the whole country. The proposal would give states the authority to hold wolf hunting and trapping seasons. The Associated Press reported Jamie Rappaport Clark, a former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now with the group Defenders of Wildlife, warned of an “all-out war on wolves” if the plan advances.“We don’t have any confidence that wolves will be managed like other wildlife,” she says. But government officials countered that the recovery of wolves from widespread extermination last century has worked and they no longer need the Endangered Species Act to shield them.Agriculture groups and lawmakers from western states are likely to support the administration’s proposal.“Ranching is a tough life,” says Martin Davis, a ranch owner in Montana. “It’s hard to make a living when you’re against mother nature. I’m a fourth-generation rancher in Paradise Valley, Montana. We’ve been here on the ranch for 45 years. One of the big problems we had was they re-introduced wolves back to Yellowstone. Early on, they were on the endangered species list and we couldn’t do anything but scare them away from our property. We lost live stock to wolves, and we’ve had some neighbors lose horses.” Wolves are now allowed to be hunted in Montana in three different seasons throughout the year. “My life savings is tied up in my cattle,” Davis says. “And when you have something out there stealing your life savings, it’s a hard pill to swallow. I think taking them off the endangered list nationwide has to be done. When that happens, I’m not saying we are going to kill every wolf in the country – that’s not the point. Taking them off the endangered species list is good so the numbers can be managed. I don’t hate wolves, but I can see the argument that they don’t want the wolf to go away again. But I don’t think that’s a worry if they’re managed correctly.”U.S. Fish and Wildlife have until March 2020 to decide if the gray wolf comes off the endangered species list. Officials will take public comments on hearings until July 15. 3887

There's been an increase in sales of bullet-resistant backpacks for children, in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton last weekend.American companies selling the items say they're catering to heightened demand from parents during the back-to-school shopping season. But critics argue they are using tragedy as a marketing opportunity and exploiting parents' worst fears.Safety is high on the minds of many parents, especially after the El Paso and Dayton, Ohio shootings that left 31 people dead."We've definitely seen a spike over the past week or so in sales and that could be attributed to back to school but it could be attributed to some of the national events that are happening as well, "said Yasir Sheikh, founder and president of Skyline USA.His company makes Guard Dog Security products like pepper spray and stun gun,s and started offering bullet-resistant backpacks called ProShield Scout for children last year.Steve Naremore founded Houston-based TuffyPacks in late 2015 after his daughter, a fourth-grade teacher, told him about the frequency of active shooting drills for her students. His company produces some bullet-resistant backpacks but the bulk of his business is in removable ballistic shields that are inserted in backpacks.Naremore says his backpacks could be the difference between suffering "lethal versus non lethal" injuries."Some (parents) say to me 'I can't believe the world has come to this I have to send my child to school with a bulletproof backpack'. The other half say it's something that is probably necessary," he comments.TuffyPacks markets its products on its website with mass shootings in mind. And its backpacks don't come cheap. TuffyPacks' shields range in price from 9 to 9. Skyline's ProShield Scout backpacks are priced at 9, although it's less than the adult version that tops at 9.Some also cast doubt on the backpacks' safety and how much they can really protect children. Both Guard Dog Security and TuffyPacks claim their products are tested in independent labs in line with the standards for the National Institute of Justice and meet the requirements for a Level IIIA rating. That means the shields can thwart a 9-millimeter handgun and a .44 magnum. Naremour says it's like wearing a police vest. But the National Institute of Justice — the research, development and evaluation arm of the Department of Justice that comes up with the rating — has itself never conducted tests on these products or certified them and therefore cannot vouch for them.Educational experts say bullet-resistant backpacks are not the solution.Still, the makers of bullet-resistant backpacks have tapped into a fear that is real. And for parents feeling helpless and looking for an answer, the backpacks provide them with one.Marisol Rodriguez of Milwaukee said she is considering buying one for her 13-year-old son."It shouldn't have to come to the selling bulletproof backpacks," she said. "That just goes to show what type of society we live in today." 3026

The Transportation Security Administration released tips on Thursday to help travelers traverse through security and make it to their destination on time during the busy Thanksgiving holiday. The TSA said it expects to screen 26.8 million air passengers and crew members from Nov. 22 through Dec. 2, a 4 percent increase over 2018. Here are 10 tips the TSA wants travelers to know:Get to the airport early—two hours prior to a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Only a turkey gets to the airport in the last minute during the Thanksgiving travel period. Don’t be a turkey!Know which foods can travel in your carry-on bag. Pies, cakes, stuffing mix, casseroles, are all good in a carry-on bag because they are solid food items.Know which foods should go into a checked bag. Gravy, cranberry sauce, wine, jam, preserves, should all go into a checked bag. Why? They are not solids. Basically if you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it, (say that three times fast) then it’s not a solid and should be packed in a checked bag.Wear slip-on shoes. Shoe laces and zip-up boots take extra time to remove and put back on. Wearing slip-ons just saves you time. But admittedly, it’s fun to watch someone else hop around on one foot as they try to remove a boot.Place your electronic carving knife (or your non-electric knife) in your checked bag. Should be a no-brainer, wouldn’t you think?Pack smart. Don’t bring along any prohibited items. If you are not sure if an item should go in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither, don’t be shy, just tweet your question to @AskTSA or ask via Facebook Messenger.Download the free MyTSA app. The best thing about it is the “Can I bring” feature. Type in an item and it lets you know immediately if you should pack it in a checked or carry-on bag. It also can let you know if there is an airport delay and whether TSA Precheck lanes are available. Super helpful. And if you get bored during the holiday, you can use it to play a game with your relatives by asking them to guess if an item should be packed in a checked or carry-on bag and using the app to provide the correct answer.Use your time in the checkpoint line wisely. It’s the perfect time to take items out of your pockets and place them in your carry-on bag and to get your ID and boarding pass ready to hand to the TSA officer.Enroll in TSA Precheck--if not before Thanksgiving, then before your next trip. It allows you to leave on your shoes, lightweight jacket and belt when you go through the checkpoint. Plus, you can leave your electronics and your one-quart-size liquids bag in your carry-on bag instead of removing it at the checkpoint. It’s like driving in the fast lane.Pay attention to the guidance that the TSA officers are providing at the checkpoint. They may be directing you to a shorter line or guiding you around someone who is moving slowly. And they may be giving you some advice that will lessen the likelihood that you’ll need a pat-down.Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. 3081

The Walt Disney Co. was built on the shoulders of Mickey Mouse, so it may come as a surprise that there never has been a theme park attraction based on the lovable rodent. That’s about to change with the debut of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway ride on Wednesday at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. The ride gives visitors the impression that they are watching a cartoon featuring Mickey and Minnie come to life as the Disney characters look for the perfect place for a romantic picnic and then end up on a train ride on the “Runnamuck Railroad.” The ride features trackless vehicles, multiple dimensional sets and projections on multiple planes, as well as animatronic figures and theatrical effects.“We’ve taken our whole grab bag of theatrical tricks and blended them together so seamlessly you won’t be able to tell what’s what,” said Kevin Rafferty, executive creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering. “There is more happening in each and every scene than you could possibly have time to see in just one experience.” 1058

There's a new scam going around and it's targeting users of a popular mobile payment app.Venmo's roughly 40 million users could soon be getting a message from the app, but it may just be an attempt to scam you, police warn. Here's how the scam works, according to the Dighton Police Department in Massachusetts.Venmo users receive a text message saying their Venmo account is about to be charged, and if they want to cancel the withdrawal they need to log on and decline it.The message allows people to log on to a website with any phone number and password combination. It then asks users to verify who they are by entering their bankcard number and other personal and financial information. What makes the scam extra deceptive is the fact that the webpage users are redirected to looks similar to Venmo, using the same colors and fonts as the app.Do not use the webpages provided by the text to enter into your account, the 936
