South Carolina is in mourning after a sheriff's deputy died nearly three weeks after she was wounded in a standoff, the Florence County Sheriff's Office said.Deputy Farrah Turner, who passed away on Monday, was one of seven officers who were shot when authorities tried to serve a search warrant on Oct. 3.Another officer, Sgt. SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine veteran suffered major injuries after a wrong-way driver crashed into him on I-5 early Saturday morning.Friends have identified the victim as Luis Maldonado. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. His service dog Jax, who was also in the car, was taken to an animal hospital and is expected to survive.The wrong-way driver died at the scene. California Highway Patrol suspects he was under the influence of alcohol. He has not been identified.Maldonado's friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the mounting medical costs.  622

ST JOSEPH, Mo. — A couple rushed to save a dog’s life after she was shot and left for dead in the woods.Jacob Carter, his fiance Robin Musser, and a few other family members were out hunting for mushrooms Thursday in the Bluffwoods Conservation Area just south of St. Joseph, Missouri.The group was just finishing up when they heard gunshots."We heard two gunshots, and we were coming on out anyway and stuff, getting ready to pack up and leave,” said Carter.Musser said the gunfire didn’t worry them since it’s common during turkey hunting season. "We'd seen a turkey earlier, thought maybe someone was shooting at the turkey,” she said.As they were driving out of the woods, something caught Musser’s eye."We were coming down the road and I spotted the dog and thought it was a puppy,” said Musser.Carter pulled over to go see if the dog was okay.As he walked closer he noticed it was an adult dog that wasn’t moving, and then he saw blood."That's when I noticed that she was shot, so I took my shirt off and started applying pressure,” said Carter.The white female pitbull had been shot twice, once in the back of the head and once through her ear. 1184

Starbucks is exchanging its iconic green straws for recyclable strawless lids.The newer tops were modeled after the lids the coffee company has used on their hot drinks.They will have a drinking spout and contain about 9% "less plastic than the flat lid and straw historically used for iced beverages."“We developed and trialed several prototypes to arrive at this milestone,” said Andy Corlett, director of global packaging solutions and innovations, in a press release. “A recyclable, strawless lid becoming the standard for iced drinks is one small way we can give more than we take from the planet. This is a significant moment for Starbucks as we work to reduce waste and safeguard the environment.”Corlett and his team helped design the lid, the company said.Drinks with whipped cream and blended drinks, like frappuccinos, will still come with a domed lid and straw.The company plans to reduce 50% of waste by 2030.Lids will be rolled out to stores in the US and Canada in the coming year, the company said.Straws will still be available upon request, the company said. 1084
