CHENGDU, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin has urged local governments in southwest China's Sichuan Province to boost post-quake reconstruction in the areas jolted by a massive earthquake last year.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks during his inspection tour to Sichuan Province from Aug. 14 to 18. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A grand evening gala to celebrate New China's 60th founding anniversary started Thursday evening at the Tian'anmen Square when 60 birthday-candle-shaped fireworks exploded into the sky and lit up the vast square. Red, pink, white and orange fireworks shot up into the night sky, lighting up the Tian'anmen Rostrum and 56 giant decorative columns, which were set up on the square to represent China's 56 ethnic groups. Fireworks are seen in the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, on the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 1, 2009    That was the beginning of a 33-minute fireworks feast in the evening. Earlier this month, the Beijing Daily quoted pyrotechnist Ding Zhenkuan as saying that the display would send nearly 42,000 shells into the sky, doubling the number fired at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony last August.     Following candle-shaped fireworks, a teenage boy, standing at the podium for the flag-raising ceremony, played with a trumpet the melody of the song of "My motherland".     As the boy was playing the trumpet, more than 4,000 performers gathering under the podium began to play the magic effects of more than 4,000 LED-light-equipped trees.     Vice director of the gala, Zhao Dongming, called the performance as "light cube", referring to the well-known Olympic architecture "Water Cube", or the National Aquatics Center. The building, equipped with LED lights, can put on various colors at night.     The performers of the "light cube" displayed a rolling effect of the 60 years from 1949, when the People's Republic of China was founded, to 2009. Fireworks meanwhile again shot up and exploded in the night sky, creating the Arabic numeral of "60," symbolizing New China's 60th birthday.     Seconds later, a fireworks-armed curtain, standing opposite to the Tian'anmen Rostrum, was ignited and began to explode. The exploding fireworks on the curtain -- 90 meters wide and 25 meters high -- created the sun, river, waterfall and mountains, representing the vast land of China. UNITED NATIONS, July 29 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said here on Wednesday that he was pleased with what China is doing to contain climate change and what the Asian country will do in negotiations that will lead to an agreement at the Copenhagen summit on climate change in December.     Ban told his monthly press conference that "I was pleased that (Chinese) President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao assured me that China wants to seal a deal in Copenhagen in December and that China will play an active and constructive role in the negotiations to achieve this end."     During his meeting with the Chinese leaders, "we also agreed on the importance of global leaders showing the way and discussed in detail the Climate Change Summit in New York on Sept. 22," Ban said.     "I wanted to highlight the special responsibility of countries like China to lead the global fight against climate change, as well as highlight all that China is doing," he said. "Come September, we will be entering a crucial stage on climate change."     "Climate change was the major focus of my trip to Asia," he said.     "In particular, I helped to launch an ambitious program to promote energy saving lighting which could reduce China's energy consumption by 8 percent," he said. "This is a major step into the21st century."     The overall goal for the Copenhagen Summit, slated for Dec. 7-18, is to establish an ambitious global climate agreement for the period 2012.     In order to have "a robust agreement on adaptation in Copenhagen," he said, "I continue to press for achieving a fair, effective and scientifically ambitious deal in Copenhagen that can benefit all nations."     "That's why I am convening the September climate change summit," Ban said. "We expect more than 100 heads of state and governments -- the largest gathering of leaders on climate change ever."     "Two years ago, only a few leaders could speak to these issues," he said. "Today, leaders are walking the road to Copenhagen together."     "But, we have less than five months to seal a deal," he said. "To keep up the momentum, I will travel to arctic polar ice rim later next month to get a first-hand look at conditions there -- in particular the melting sea ice."     "I will then go on to the World Climate Conference in Geneva organized by the World Meteorological Organization," he said.

CHENGDU, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- All the nine people missing in mudslides caused by heavy rains in southwest China's Sichuan Province were dead as the last two bodies were recovered over the weekend, the provincial government said late Sunday.     Rocks and mud buried a residential quarter of Sinohydro Bureau 10, a hydropower engineering and construction company in Jinyang County, early Friday, leaving nine workers missing. BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese food and drug regulators are required to report food accidents to their superiors and local health authorities within six hours, according to a government draft regulation Thursday.     The draft, issued by the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), demands that once accidents occur involving 30 or more people, food and drug regulators at or above the county level should report them to their superiors and local health authorities within six hours.     With regard to food safety accidents that occur on campuses, during important nationwide festivities, involve 100 people or more, or kill one or more people, food and drug regulators should not only abide by the "six hour regulation," but also report them to the SFDA "in a timely manner," according to the draft.     Catering service runners, should they find food accidents, are asked to immediately stop using all suspicious food and cooking facilities and protect the site. They are also required to report to medical authorities and food regulators at or above the county level within two hours.     The draft regulation also stipulates that heads at schools, companies or government organs will be held accountable if food accidents occur twice in one year in their cafeterias.     The SFDA also asked food and drug regulators at all levels to formulate emergency plans to deal with food accidents based on local conditions.
