Walk into Léa Rainey’s kitchen and one of the first things you’ll notice is a bucket. It’s a bucket—formerly a vinaigrette container--that would look a bit unsightly to some, filled with mostly scraps of food, coffee grounds, and egg shells.“Probably one of the first things we started doing was composting,” Rainey says. “And we actually find that if we leave the lid off of it that we get less bugs, less smell.”For the last couple of years, Rainey has been on a zero-waste journey.“Zero-waste is really about reducing waste right? So whatever form it comes in, it’s really about minimizing your waste, the things you need to throw away.”She admits it’s difficult, even two years in, but anytime she struggles, she reminds herself of the tips she gives others: it’s about the five R’s.“Refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot,” she says. The first one is the most important, she adds.“Refusing is the most important thing to do. Refuse taking a plastic bag at the checkout stand. Just say, ‘No, thank you,’ and bring your own.”Single-use plastics are another big no-no in Rainey’s house. Everything from her toothbrushes—with bamboo handle and natural bristles—to her shampoo, which she buys in bar form.“You rub the bar on your head and it foams, lathers and all the things shampoo does; it just doesn’t have a plastic bottle, she says.“If someone were to bring plastic water bottles into my house, I would freak out.”Her journey is one she now hopes to share with the world—or at least with the surrounding communities of Garden City, Idaho, a small town adjacent to Boise. This September, she’s set to open Roots Zero Waste Market, a zero-waste grocery store and café. She says it’s the only place like it in the country.“I think it’s really important for businesses to start showing up and businesses to start helping consumers to waste less.”From foods in bulk—and never stored in plastic—to packaged snacks that only come in compostable wrap.Rainey believes there’s a demand for a place like this and believes it’s only a matter of time before the concept catches on nationwide.“I feel like that groundswell is what will turn the tide and make legislators and make politicians see this is something people care about.” 2236

WASINGTON – Elizabeth Warren's campaign has fired its national organizing director, Richard McDaniel, after "multiple complaints regarding inappropriate behavior," the campaign said Friday."Over the past two weeks, senior campaign leadership received multiple complaints regarding inappropriate behavior by Rich McDaniel," Warren communications director Kristen Orthman said in a statement. "Over the same time period, the campaign retained outside counsel to conduct an investigation. Based on the results of the investigation, the campaign determined that his reported conduct was inconsistent with its values and that he could not be a part of the campaign moving forward."In a statement provided to CNN, McDaniel confirmed that he is no longer with the Warren campaign, saying that "departing at this time is in the best interest of both parties.""I would never intentionally engage in any behavior inconsistent with the campaign or my own values," McDaniel said. "If others feel that I have, I understand it is important to listen even when you disagree."McDaniel declined a request from CNN for an interview. In the same written statement, McDaniel said he had "tremendous respect" for his former colleagues on the campaign "despite any disagreements," and that he wished the campaign well.According to a source familiar with the investigation conducted by outside counsel Kate Kimpel of KK Advising, the Warren campaign did not hear any reports of sexual assault or rape, but added that they can't say more due to confidentiality. The firing was first reported by Politico.McDaniel is the former field and political director for Democratic Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama and senior adviser to Randall Woodfin's mayoral campaign in Birmingham. He was also Hillary Clinton's primary states regional director. 1820

When an Oklahoma mother almost had her 4-year-old snatched from her hands, another mom standing close by jumped in to help. The two moms came together for the first time since the incident on Wednesday. On Saturday, LeeAnn Carrol says a man followed her and her four-year-old son Wyatt into a Tulsa Barnes and Noble. LeeAnn was nervous, so she kept hold of Wyatt's hand."He was telling my son he could pick anything out in the store, and he could just walk out and it's on him. And then it was like, 'just come over here Wyatt, let's go see this.' and I said, 'let's not,'" LeeAnn said. Then, the unthinkable happened, as LeeAnn says the man grabbed Wyatt and tried to run off. That's when Danielle Ritchie, another mother standing by, jumped in to help."He kept saying, 'whatever you want son, pick out whatever you want, I'll buy it, son'," Danielle said. "I don't even know, it was so quick, I just remember grabbing his arm and saying 'no'."Danielle was in the store with her two daughters and her husband Cory. Cory stopped the man before he could leave the children's section, and shortly after police arrested him."It was just frightening, very frightening," LeeAnn said. "I'm still shaking about it, I'll probably never let go of that."Wyatt is fine, but his mom is still terrified."I don't want to leave him alone, I don't want to leave him out of my sight," LeeAnn said.Danielle says it's a moment she will never forget."It was worse than a nightmare," Danielle said.As mothers, they both have the same message after the close call. They warn parents to watch their surroundings, and if anything seems off, take the chance to step in.This article was written by Chris DiMaria for 1700
