Three weeks into the 2019 racing season, both attendance and overall betting handle are down at Del Mar. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says attendance is down about 5 percent, and handle is down 14 percent compared to 2018. Thoroughbred Club CEO Joe Harper says the issues surrounding the 30 horse deaths at Santa Anita have turned off some fans. "We've got to prove to our racing fans that we're doing the safest things we can to keep these horses healthy," he said. So far, three horses have died at Del Mar this season, all during training (two died in a freak accident when they collided head on before the second day of racing). Harper says the track has increased safety protocols that have been helping keep horses safe. "There's vets out there every morning keeping an eye on," he said. "They see a horse that maybe doesn't look that good, isn't warming up enough to where he'd be safe, we get him off the racetrack."Harper says the attendance and betting handle are on track with estimates. They are all the rage right now, they help you find your family's history. "We've always wondered about the validity of my dad's side of the family and their claims about where we're from."Elizabeth Makos is as curious as we all are. "So we think we are half Italian, quarter Czechoslovakian and a quarter polish."She agreed to help put these DNA tests, to the test. Makos gave saliva samples three times, one for Ancestry DNA, 23 and Me and MyHeritage. We sealed them up and sent them off and waited about 6 weeks.We got her results back and here's what Makos thought of them."It's shocking. It is really shocking. I can't imagine what technology they employ to get these results," she said.It's shocking because her results were all over the place. When it comes to Eastern Europe, Ancestry said she was 49 percent Eastern European, but 23 and me and MyHeritage only put the percentage in the high 20s. "When we look at it for example, it says the Balkans here… one says 34 percent and one says 18 percent. A bit of a discrepancy there."Makos thought for sure she is 50 percent Italian. 23 and me and MyHeritage says she's closer to 30 percent. She even had some North African DNA."I would love to know," Makos said about having North African DNA. "I know I get really tan in the summer but I didn't know I got that tan… who knows."The companies don't claim to be perfectly accurate, and use different algorithms. MyHeritage told us in a Skype interview, it maps more parts of the globe that other companies."MyHeritage DNA has 42 ethnic regions with percentages and that's the most on the market, Rafi Mendelsohn, spokesperson for MyHeritage said."Mendelsohn encourages you to read the fine print including what companies might do with your DNA profile after testing."Personal information provided to MyHeritage is never sold, licensed or shared with any third parties, he said." Both Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me say your DNA could be used for medical research by its "partners" after your name has been stripped out. Peter Pitts, a former FDA associate commissioner said, watch out."Companies will tell you that they may sell the information but nobody can find you," Pitts said. "And that's not true. There's been studies done at Harvard for example where a couple of professors got genetic information that was supposedly anonymous and was able to figure out who the people were through very easy mechanisms."He says the results shouldn't be taken as gospel and companies say don't use the findings to make medical decisions. "People need to understand that what they're getting back is an interesting snapshot not necessarily accurate or clinically relevant," Pitts said. Makos said she's telling her friends to use the tests only for fun."I'm glad we did this because I probably would have just taken one test on my own and completely trusted the results. This Labor Day Weekend, Denver is basking in 90-degree heat. As Labor Day comes to a close, the city could be buried in several inches of snow.Despite the major heat wave sweeping the Rocky Mountains, a cold front is set to sweep across parts of Rockies, bringing freezing cold and even some snow.“A significant change in the weather will occur late Monday into Tuesday,” the National Weather Service said. “Temperatures will plummet behind a strong cold front with rain and snow forming. Snow levels will drop sharply and accumulating snow is likely across the mountains and foothills."The National Weather Service also warned the area for possible power outages due to the snow falling on live vegetation.The weather is just as extreme in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The area is under a red flag warning for possible fires as temperatures will reach the 90s this weekend. By Tuesday, the area could have several inches of snow.The high temperature is expected to drop from 94 this weekend to 37 on Tuesday in Cheyenne. 1019

Tourism spending in Oceanside set a record in 2017, with visitors shelling out 1 million last year.The new numbers, from a study by Dean Runyon Associates, were announced at the city's 8th annual Tourist Summit."It’s an exciting time in Oceanside," says Visit Oceanside CEO Leslee Gaul. "We’re really going through renaissance here."The city has had seven straight years of growth in tourist spending. The numbers in 2017 were 10.1% higher than 2016. Employment in the industry is also growing steadily. Tourism supports more than 3,300 jobs in Oceanside, and jobs in that sector have had averaged a 5.1% increase since 2010.Tourists spent 0 million on hotel rooms in 2017. That's up 11% from the year before, and it's twice the amount they spent in 2010. That gave the city  million in Transient Occupancy Taxes, money that goes directly into the city's general fund to pay for city services, infrastructure, parks and more.Gaul thinks more people are coming to Oceanside because the city offers a more laid-back version of the Southern California lifestyle."We’re still one of the classics, Southern California beach communities," she says. "We really have what appeals to visitors today. They’re looking for that local, authentic experience and I think being slow to grow over the past few years has really been a benefit to our community."Local business owners say the increase in tourists is helping them expand as well. Arthur Escobar owns Oceanside Boat Rentals. He says business is so good, he's already bought two new boats for this summer season. He expects to buy two more by the end of the summer. He's also hiring 7 or 8 more employees for the season."This is a nice, friendly town," says Escobar. "There's no hustle and bustle, The beach here is incredible, three miles of big sandy beaches, you don’t get that most places."The study also showed a significant increase in spending at local restaurants. Gaul thinks that's part of what's fueling the city's renaissance. "There have been dozens of new restaurants opening in the last few years, and we have more on the horizon," she says.There are also more hotels planned, including a pair of new properties near the iconic Oceanside Pier. One will be a resort-style hotel with 226 rooms. The other is a boutique-style hotel that will have 160 rooms and incorporate a renovation of the Top Gun house.  2410
