COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, had a dying wish to help educate needy children. But his estate has been held up by 14 years of legal battles. Now the South Carolina Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that Tomi Rae Hynie, a former partner of Brown's who claimed to be his wife, was not legally married to the singer due to her failure to annul a previous marriage, and therefore has no right to his estate. Brown's union with Hynie has long been the center of the evolving legal troubles following his death at the age of 73 on Christmas Day 2006. 582

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — An Indiana man has been charged with murder after he allegedly killed and decapitated his wife.Police arrested Michael Parks of Crawfordsville on Friday after investigators found his wife's body and severed head, according to court documents filed Monday. On Aug. 20, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office received a report of a deceased woman, identified as Hope Parks, whose headless body was found on County Road 225 on the Sugar Creek Bridge.Michael Parks told Crawfordsville police his wife had been missing since Aug. 18 following an argument. He said the last time he saw her was when she left their house and got into a silver or white Honda that was driven by an unknown person.During a search of the couple's house, police found dried blood in the gravel driveway in front of an overhead garage door, on the garage floor with a shoe print and on an exterior deck. Officers also discovered a trail of dried blood in the grass.Later in the day, investigators found a human head with a bullet wound buried in the cellar of the house.Police also found a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition, which matched a spent .22 caliber cartridge casing that was found in the yard next to a trail of blood. A phone believed to have belonged to Hope Parks was found in a safe in the home's bedroom. Investigators also found a man's shoe with tread similar to the footprint in the blood droppings in the garage. The next day, investigators discovered a blue tarp that was stained with blood, along with hair and plastic bags containing blood-covered rags that were found in the hole where the severed head was buried. An initial hearing for Michael Parks was held Tuesday. His jury trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 12, 2021.This story was originally published by Daniel Bradley at WRTV. 1804

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ind. — A Wisconsin man drowned on Sunday when he jumped into a southern Indiana lake in an effort to save two women who fell off a towable tube and were struggling to stay afloat.According to a report from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, an Indiana conservation officer was on boat patrol on Patoka Lake in Crawford County around 2:51 p.m. Sunday when witnesses alerted him to a possible drowning. Multiple 911 calls came in shortly after reporting that a man had disappeared in the water.Conservation officers said two females were aboard the towable tube affixed to a stationary rental boat by a rope when they fell off the tube and struggled to stay afloat.Multiple people from the rental boat jumped in to assist and rescued one of the females. One of the people who jumped in to help, Travis Ray St. Martin, 33, of Racine, Wisc., disappeared under the water. The other female, K'neisha Adams, 25, of Burke, Virginia, was rescued by a group of people from a separate boat. She was taken by medical helicopter to University of Louisville Hospital and later released.Conservation officer public safety divers recovered St. Martin's body around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The Crawford County Coroner's Office has preliminarily ruled the cause of death as accidental drowning.Conservation officers said alcohol and drugs are not suspected of being contributing factors. The DNR said although there were adequate life jackets on the rental boat, none were in use. This story was originally published by Bob Blake at WRTV. 1545

Commercial construction is experiencing a huge downtown and has yet to recover since it dipped at the start of the pandemic. But in contrast, residential construction is experiencing historic demands.“It's been a remarkable year for housing,” said Robert Dietz, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders. When the pandemic hit, no one was sure what the impact would be on housing.“People need larger homes; they need to fix up their existing homes and frankly there’s not enough inventory on the marketplace so builders are really busy right now,” Dietz said.So busy, in fact, that some are deciding to buy new homes rather than wait for their projected renovation to start. The NAHB is a trade association with 140,000 members who handle all facets of family construction.“We’re looking this year, we think single family construction will be up almost 10% and that will make it the best year for single-family home building since the Great Recession itself,” Dietz said. But that doesn't, by any means, put anyone in a "perfect" position.“There are headwinds on the horizon and the industry has faced a number of persistent challenges that have reduced housing affordability,” Dietz said. “Those would include the persistent lack of skilled labor, lack of lots in high-demand markets, and of course regulatory costs have been a persistent thorn in the side of the industry causing costs to be higher and pricing out home buyers out of the market.”When demand goes up, supply goes down. Lumber prices are at an all-time high. It's taking months for builders to get their materials and supplies, and people are finding themselves stuck.“It can be a frustrating marketplace because you have those historically low interest rates that you want to take advantage of, you’re looking for more space given the changes to telework and all the factors that have changed as a result of the virus but there’s not the inventory there to meet the demand in front of the industry,” said Dietz.Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America, was asked whether some are considering moving into the residential sector because it's doing so much better than the commercial side. He said, "Home building is really a different market."Simonson said the contractors in his organization do “apartment buildings, every type of non-residential building, infrastructure, highways, water and sewer systems, power plants and so forth.” He said contractors across the national saw an initial rebound, but it's been on a steady decline since the spring.“Non-residential construction, there’s a lot of doubt about whether there’s going to be demand for more stores or offices and whether owners whether they’re private or universities or state and local governments have the money to pay for them,” Simonson said.He says it's different in every state and region. Some niche industries are doing okay, like data centers, and the fields of medical device and health care. But most industries, like hotel and retail, for instance, have just about disappeared.“I have to say I’m pessimistic the construction industry is going to lag the overall economy,” Simonson said. “There are hopeful signs about the economy being able to pick up speed in 2021 if enough people get vaccinated and the vaccine proves to be effective.”Construction tends to take a while to bounce back. And for those who are waiting to move up or move out of their homes, economists say your best bet is patience. 3507
