SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Airport Authority announced Monday that the Pacific Highway Economy parking lot will permanently close to the public the day after Christmas.The lot will be converted into employee parking, according to airport officials. The need for a new employee lot was brought on by construction of a new stormwater infiltration system at the south side of the runway, where employees currently park. The new system is part of the airport's Stormwater Management Plan to control and reduce pollution caused by the airport's day-to-day operations.Airport travelers will still be able to use the parking lots at both terminals, the Terminal 2 parking plaza and the airport's long-term parking lot. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County will remain in the red tier of the state's four-tier COVID-19 reopening plan for at least another week, the California Department of Public Health confirmed Tuesday.The county's state-calculated, adjusted case rate is 6.8 daily infections per 100,000 residents, up from 6.7 the previous week. The unadjusted case rate was 7.2, up from 7 last Tuesday. The adjusted rate is due to San Diego County's high volume of tests, but still leaves the county on the precipice of the state's most restrictive tier -- purple.The testing positivity percentage is 3%, considerably less than last week, and that number would qualify for the third -- or orange -- tier.To remain in the red tier, the county must continue to have an adjusted case rate of less than 7.0 per 100,000 residents and a testing positivity percentage of less than 5%.A new metric the state released Tuesday is the health equity metric, which finds the positivity rate of the county's least healthy quartile. San Diego County's health equity is 5.7%, almost double the county's average positive testing percentage.According to the state guidelines, the health equity will measure socially determined health circumstances, such as a community's transportation, housing, access to health care and testing, access to healthy food and parks.Neighborhoods are grouped and scored by U.S. Census tracts on the Healthy Places Index, https://healthyplacesindex.org/. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County supervisors voted Tuesday for Dianne Jacob to serve as board chairwoman, and approved Greg Cox as vice chairman.By a 5-0 vote, the board also voted in Jim Desmond as the chair pro tem. Desmond, who succeeds Bill Horn as District 5 representative, made a motion for the leadership change based on the board rotation policy.The vote came after outgoing board Chairwoman Kristin Gaspar made a short speech on her time in the leadership role.She cited numerous board accomplishments, including the formation of working groups on the regional homeless problem and county road policies."This year has been incredible," Gaspar said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought the public's help Tuesday to find a Navy SEAL veteran last seen more than two weeks ago at his residence in the Chollas Lake Park area.Johnathan Steven Surmont, 45, was last seen Aug. 27 and was last heard from when he contacted his ex-wife Aug. 31 to tell her he was in a "rough place" in Los Angeles, according to a missing person bulletin from the San Diego Police Department. His vehicle was found four days later, on Sept. 3, in La Jolla.In a video posted to Vimeo dated three years ago, Surmont described himself as a disabled veteran who spent 15 years as a Navy SEAL."I was a SEAL sniper, communicator and unmanned systems expert," he said in a testimonial for the Red Circle Foundation, an organization that describes itself as supporting the families of fallen and wounded U.S. Special Operations forces."I'm a single father and a small business owner," Surmont said before describing a long list of injuries, which he said included "a traumatic brain injury" and "about 17 different areas that I'm experiencing chronic pain on a daily basis." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police are searching for a gunman who wounded a man in a shooting at a trolley station in the East Village neighborhood.It happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on Broadway between 11th Avenue and Park Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim, a man in his 30s, was at the trolley station when a gray sedan pulled up and a man in the passenger seat got out, fired one shot and got back in the car, which fled eastbound on Broadway, Buttle said. A car matching the suspect vehicle's description was later located and impounded for evidence.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his left torso, which was not believed to be life-threatening, the officer said.The suspected gunman was described as a 5-foot-7 Black man, about 140 pounds, wearing blue sweatpants. 839
