DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three fires burned in rural East County Wednesday afternoon as Cal Fire worked to extinguish the flames. According to Cal Fire, all three of the fires sparked in the community of Dulzura along Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Freezer Road. Video of the blaze shows traffic in the area backed up for several miles after crews closed Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Barrett Lake Road. Around 5:30 p.m., Cal Fire said crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread of all three fires. In total, all three fires burned slightly less than 32 acres. Sky10 was live over the fire. DETROIT, Michigan — General Motors made a major announcement on Monday saying it will close two plants in metro Detroit as well as plants in Ohio and Canada. The plan will help save the company billion by 2020, according to GM.In a news release, the company said it will close the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant in Detroit and Warren Transmission Operations in Warren. Other plans closing include the Oshawa Assembly Plant in Oshawa, Ontario, the Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio and the Baltimore Operations in White Marsh, Maryland.According to a spokesperson for GM, the plants will be unallocated which means they will no longer produce vehicles in those plants in 2019. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- Investigators are gathering clues to determine what caused a deadly single-car crash along a major roadway in El Cajon early Friday morning.The crash was reported at around 2:20 a.m. Friday by witnesses traveling to nearby pharmacy on Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road. The witnesses, a woman and her young daughter, called 9-1-1 after discovering a wrecked white SUV fully engulfed in flames. According to El Cajon Police, the driver was heading westbound on Fletcher Parkway when they stuck a tree. The SUV immediately caught fire.The woman and other good Samaritans tried to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle.Crews arrived and also tried to rescue the trapped motorist but the victim died in the blaze.No information about the victim has been released at this time.Both directions of Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road were closed as of 6 a.m. while officials continue their investigation. 928

(KGTV) - A pair of Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets from an El Cajon high school are turning heads for their achievements.It has been 19 years since a student from Grossmont High School was appointed to military service academy and the class of 2018 has two who received multiple appointments.John Flaherty and Nicholas Ghosn earned four appointments in total.Flaherty was nominated to West Point and the United States Merchant Marine Academy while Ghosn earned them to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.“I was on top of the world,” said Flaherty describing the moment he got the call he was being appointed, “it was everything I dreamed of since I was four-years-old.”Flaherty is attending West Point and Ghosn will head to Annapolis at the end of their summer.Nicholas Ghosn says it was bittersweet to get the nod from the U.S. Navy.“All I ever wanted was to go to that college and join the ranks of the officer corps in the Navy, but I knew I was going to be away from my family and friends and home,” said Ghosn, “it’s going to be a long time before I get to see them so I was kind of sad because I knew this was it.”The 17-year-olds grew up a mile and a half from each other in Spring Valley and played sports together.“It’s unprecedented,” said Gunnery Master Sgt.
