However, with the average rent for an apartment around ,000 and the cost to purchase a home around 0,000, America’s finest city loses some of its appeal.“Everybody said you’re set with your life,” Chris Allen explains.Allen is a former Navy rescue diver, swim coach, husband and dog dad who fell on hard times because of a bad motorcycle accident.“I had like a 9 percent chance to live,” Allen said.This accident forced him out of work for six months, so he started living in his van. He ended up converting his van to include a fridge, a fold out bed, lighting and uses a bucket with kitty litter for the restroom. Now a year later, he’s embraced van life and says it provides a chance to travel and save money.“It’s more freedom, but at the same time it’s more responsibility,” Allen said.Allen isn’t alone. During a weekend meet-up, around 300 vans and van-lifers packed Fiesta Island in California to explore each other's vans, and discuss life on the road.Liz Bryant, who works as a social media influencer, is living in a converted Mercedes sprinter van. She said she started living in her van for the freedom. “We don’t want to be tied down to an apartment. We don’t want to be tied down to a monthly payment,” Bryant said. Sky Montrell is moving into her van because she is tired of throwing away ,000 a month on rent. “The cost of living in LA is crazy,” Montrell said. The "van life movement" has made a mark on social media. The hashtag #VanLife has been used more than 4 million times. Even though the movement is growing in popularity, sleeping in your vehicle on city streets in San Diego isn’t allowed. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old motorcyclist who led police on a pursuit through the Pacific Beach area of San Diego was hospitalized this morning with a life-threatening injury after crashing into another vehicle.The motorcyclist failed to yield to officers near the intersection of Garnet Avenue and Jewell Street about 11:10 p.m. Friday, and led officers southbound on Jewell Street, then westbound on Grand Avenue, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.At the intersection of Grand Avenue and Fanuel Street, the motorcyclist split lanes between stopped vehicles and entered the intersection on a red light and broadsided a 2019 Toyota Prius going southbound on Fanuel Street, Heims said.The rider sustained a life-threatening brain bleed that required immediate surgery. The 62-year-old driver of the Prius and his passengers were not hurt, Heims said.The name of the suspect was not disclosed. 937
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego State University student accused of setting a string of fires around the campus over the course of three days was charged with a dozen felony counts Wednesday, including burglary, arson and vandalism. Madelyn Delarosa, 19, was taken into custody Saturday morning, following four fires she's suspected of setting to apartments and vehicles across campus between March 13-16. No injuries were reported in connection with the fires, all of which occurred a few blocks south of Viejas Arena. However, Deputy District Attorney Rikole Santin noted that one of the fires was ignited in an occupied apartment, inside which a person was sleeping. Santin said the heat from the flames caused a window to shatter and ``rain glass and fire'' upon the victim, who was asleep just below the window. A suspected motive for the spree was unknown, as was the reason Delarosa was no longer a student at the campus. The prosecutor said the crime spree began last Wednesday with Delarosa allegedly vandalizing a vehicle parked within an apartment complex garage, causing ``well over ,000 in damage.'' At 11 a.m. Thursday, an officer on patrol spotted and quickly extinguished a fire in a parked car in the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue, according to campus police. Santin said surveillance footage captured the defendant entering a parking garage, where a Toyota Prius was set aflame, then an hour later, she allegedly ignited the exterior door of an unoccupied apartment in the 5600 block of Hardy Avenue, both times by using an unspecified accelerant. A passerby put out the apartment fire before officers arrived, police said. Around 8:30 a.m. Friday, police received word of the apartment blaze near the 5500 block of Montezuma Road, where the sleeping resident was able to escape without injury, according to Santin. That fire went out on its own, police said. Delarosa is also accused with setting a Mercedes-Benz on fire shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday in a parking garage in the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue. Delarosa has no prior criminal history, but had ``numerous prior contacts with law enforcement,'' according to Santin, the nature of which was not disclosed. SAN DIEGO (AP and KGTV) — Marine Corps officials say charges are pending against 12 Camp Pendleton Marines accused of being involved in smuggling, including driving migrants across the US-Mexico border.The Marines, who are part of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, are in confinement, officials said.Those being held include two Marine riflemen who were stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents on July 3 driving from the border with three Mexicans in the back of a BMW. That led to the additional arrests. SAN DIEGO — Two of San Diego's biggest restaurant groups are sounding the alarm over state Coronavirus regulations.Owners of the Brigantine Family of Restuarants and the Cohn Restaurant Group say indoor capacity limits aren't sustainable. Currently, a restaurant can only seat 25 percent of its capacity indoors. “If we stay open and as we enter the fall and winter months, our restaurants cannot survive on 25 percent," said Leslie Cohn, of the Cohn restaurant group.The Cohn Group spent more than 0,000 creating social distancing in 16 of its restaurants - before the 25 percent capacity limit was instituted. Their employment is now down 40 percent to about 1,200 workers.“We should be concentrating on positive test percentages, hospital capacity, ICU and PPE availability and of course mask wearing, social distancing and employee screening,” Cohn said.Her frustrations, echoed by Mike Morton, who heads the Brigantine Family of Restaurants, where employment is off 20 percent to 1,000 workers. Morton said there are now waits every Friday, Saturday and Sunday - due to the capacity restraints.“Guests are going to get tired of that, and what else is that going to do? It allows us to employ less people due to limited capacity,” Morton said.The 25 percent cap will last at least another three weeks.
