SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that different countries should learn from each other to diversify cultures in the world.     "Each country in this interconnecting world has its own culture, its own history, and its own traditions," Obama said during a dialogue with Chinese students in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.     "It is very important for the United States not to assume what is good for us is automatically good for somebody else," he said when responding to a question raised by a Shanghai college student about how to promote cultural exchanges between different countries. BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao stressed on Sunday that the final ends of the nation's economic growth is to improve people's well-being, which is always a priority on the government's agenda amid the global financial crisis. Despite the tight fiscal condition, China beefed up the income and welfare enjoyed by the retirees and low-income residents, and unveiled the significant health-care reform in 2008, Wen told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.     "We will overcome every difficulty to well implement the health-care reform which has close bearing on people's health," he said. Reforms are also made to make medicine more affordable for patients.     He also stressed the significance of the pilot program of rural pension insurance.     "Farmers aged over 60 could get 55 yuan a month. It is not a big sum, but it begins a new era," he said.     Since the global economic crisis broke out at the end of last year, the Chinese government has timely implemented a stimulus package which stepped up financial support and policy incentives to improve people's well-being and stimulate domestic demand, in order to shore up economic recovery.     China has spent 728.46 billion yuan (107.13 billion U.S. dollars) to enhance education and medical systems, social security, job promotion, affordable housing construction, and cultural development. BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Early and heavy snow storms in north China have killed 32 people, destroyed nearly 300,000 hectares of winter crops, and caused nearly 7 billion yuan (about one billion US dollars) of direct economic losses as of 2 p.m. Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     The death toll did not include those who died in snow-caused traffic accidents, the ministry said. Ten died in Hebei Province, 12 died in Henan Province, and others in provinces of Shanxi, Shandong and Shaanxi.     As of 2 p.m. Sunday, more than 9.6 million people were affectedly snow storms, and 166,000 people had been evacuated from their homes or stranded vehicles jammed on the roads.     More than 15,000 buildings collapsed, the ministry said.     Heavy snow storms began to fall on Monday in northern and central Chinese provinces, including Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Hubei and Shaanxi, and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.     Beijing also experienced heavy snow, but no deaths have been reported so far.

SANTIAGO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China is a dynamo of the world economy and is playing a central role in helping a global economic recovery, said Alicia Barcena, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for the Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), on Friday.     "China is part of the world trade of wheat, rice, soya, sugar and others, playing a very important role in the increase of those product exports. The same happens in the case of the minerals and oil," Barcena told Xinhua in an interview.     He said China is one of the most important market for Latin American and the Caribbean products.     "China is being a blessing for the exports of raw materials from Latin America and the Caribbean. But it is also a great exporter (to the region). So, it competes with the countries of this region, mainly with Mexico and the Central American nations," said Barcena.     Trade between China and Latin America has grown tremendously, he noted.     He said Mexico, for example, is beginning to see China as a partner rather than a competitor.     Mexico has given priority to trade relations with China. As a result, the Asian country is now the fifth largest overseas market for Mexican products.     Meanwhile, South America has also improved ties with China.     "All producers see the opportunity of reaching the Chinese market," said Barcena.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao will visit the United States next year at the invitation of President Barack Obama, a joint statement said Tuesday.     Obama extended the invitation at a formal meeting with Hu in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, and Hu accepted it with pleasure, said the China-U.S. Joint Statement issued after the meeting.
