CHICAGO, Ill. -- Scientists are continuing to develop new COVID-19 testing methods. Everything from throat swabs and saliva tests to breathalyzers are potential options. The federal government has ordered 150 million rapid antigen tests to help quickly identify cases in places like schools and disaster zones.Still, we're six months into the global pandemic and experts say we still need better and more frequent testing.Supply chain bottlenecks, long turnaround times and the looming flu season have many pharmaceutical companies scrambling for a better test.“There's been a great push and a lot of innovation has gone into developing new tests that might be able to be used in different scenarios,” said Dr. Emily Landon, an infectious disease specialist at University of Chicago Medicine.Abbott Laboratories’ sixth iteration of the COVID-19 test, known as “Binax Now,” is a compact credit card sized rapid test similar to a home pregnancy test.“You are receiving a nasal swab and then that swab is directly inserted into the card and there's a small pouch there that it's inserted into. Six drops of a buffer had been placed there prior to putting in the swab,” explained John Hackett, Junior Vice President of Applied Research and Technology at Abbott Laboratories.And though it does require a health care worker to administer, no specialty lab equipment is needed to process the antigen test. Results are available in about 15 minutes. The cost is apiece.“So, in 15 minutes you can look at the front of this test and if you see a single line, that would be the control line, and if there's two lines, that would indicate that the individual is positive for SARS-CoV-2,” said Hackett.The test was granted emergency use authorization by the FDA. It includes an app that allows people who test negative to display a temporary digital health pass for quick screening.The Trump administration quickly bought up 150 million tests for about 0 million.Officials say they are already beginning to deploy the tests to states, nursing homes, schools and areas hit hard by recent natural disasters.“These antigen tests however are fast and cheap, and it can be done really easily,” said Dr. Landon.Though, helpful in some scenarios, Landon cautions quick antigen tests like this can be less accurate and have a high false positive rate.“These tests aren't perfect and some of you have been in that situation with strep throat where you find that even if the test is negative that they send off a culture afterwards to make absolutely certain that you don't have strep throat and these tests are kind of similar,” she said.Still, experts say having a variety of testing options is beneficial. A startup company called Cast21 has created a new type of cast that completely overhauls its plaster and fiberglass predecessors. It takes just minutes to put on and lets patients enjoy an active life, even allowing them to swim and shower with it.A couple of weeks ago, 12-year-old Jett Karrick took a hard fall during a basketball game.“He went over and stopped himself with his left hand and he ended up having a bicortical radius fracture,” said his father Tony.A trip to the emergency room put him in a traditional fiberglass cast, but he was instantly unhappy.“Was itching quite a bit,” said Karrick. “He didn't like the way it smelled, the whole drama associated with getting in the shower and the garbage bag.”An internet search led the Karricks to the innovative new cast, a futuristic sleeve that's waterproof, lightweight and breathable.“This product is completely waterproof. You can wash your hands, shower, jump into a hot tub, go to the beach, and it'll dry right off afterwards,” said Ashley Moy, CEO and co-founder of Cast21. The company believes it could make smelly and itchy plaster casts a thing of the past.The casts start with a flexible hollow net sleeve.“So, we're going to be able to move your arm and whatever orientation we need to best keep the bones and fractures in place,” said Moy.Then a proprietary liquid is pumped into the cast’s tubes.“The liquid is going to take up any of the negative space that you had in there so that we can get a really acute and comfortable fit for you,” she said.Within minutes, the cast hardens.Earlier this week, Jett got his old cast removed and a Cast21 as a replacement.“This cast just gives me a lot more freedom. It lets my hand breathe and it doesn't stink as bad.”Nine-months into production and Cast21 is available in 13 states. While the Karrick family's insurance is covering the high-tech cast, costs can depend on the individual provider.“Our process is also way more efficient to apply and remove,” said Moy. “It's about six times quicker to put on and it only takes seconds to remove.”No saw is needed.And while the immobilization net is currently only available for lower arm fractures, the company says they are currently in research and development on new sleeves for other limbs. 2355

Organizers announced they will replace the annual live ceremony with an exclusive special honoring this year’s inductees.The program will be available on HBO and to stream on HBO Max on November 7, replacing the 35th annual live ceremony originally scheduled for May 2 of this year.“To protect the health and safety of our Inductees, their families, crews, and our attendees, we’ve made the decision that the scheduled live event is not possible,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation in a statement. “Together with HBO and executive producer Joel Gallen, we will still create an exciting program honoring our 2020 inductees, by telling the stories of their incredible contributions to music and impact on a generation of artists that followed them.”The 2020 Inductee class includes Depeche Mode, The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious B.I.G., T-Rex, and Ahmet Ertegun Award honorees Jon Landau and Irving Azoff.Visitors can now visit the Rock Hall.
