SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Developers in San Diego are offering a new concept for families looking for homes: Multi-Generational Housing.The homes include a separate suite within a single structure. The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together.The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove. At 2:00 am, San Diego Police Officers arrived at the Cos-medic Inc. Plastic Surgery Clinic in Bankers Hill, to find a smashed glass window. They said burglars got away with an unknown amount of money. At 4:15 am, dispatchers sent officers to the Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy in Clairemont Mesa, after the front door was broken in. Nothing was taken. Just 20 minutes later, police said criminals shattered the back glass window at the Carmel Valley Pharmacy. The owners immediately contacted the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to notify that the burglars took 600 tablets of Adderall, worth up to ,000 in street value. "This is one of the drugs we see that are highly abused by high school and college students...What they perceive to be a study-aid," DEA Special Agent in Charge, Colin Ruane said. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal wildlife officials were urged Wednesday to withdraw a proposal to drop 1.5 tons of rat poison on remote islands off the coast of California to kill a mice infestation until it addresses questions on the impact to wildlife.The California Coastal Commission heard public comment on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan, which has drawn criticism from local conservation groups. The commission is seeking to determine whether the plan complies with state coastal management rules.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a report presented to the commission in March that a massive house mice population is threatening the whole ecosystem on the rugged Farallon Islands, 27 miles (44 kilometers) off the coast of San Francisco.The archipelago is home to the largest seabird breeding colony in the contiguous United States, with approximately 300,000 to 350,000 birds of 13 species, including the rare ashy storm petrels. The islands are also used by marine mammal species for resting and breeding and by migratory birds.Federal wildlife officials proposed using helicopters to dump 2,900 pounds (1,315 kilograms) of cereal grain pellets laced with brodifacoum, an anticoagulant that causes rodents to bleed to death, which is banned in California.Officials acknowledged the plan will kill some seagulls and other species but argue that the benefits of eliminating the invasive species will heal the whole ecosystem."The only way to protect these species and allow the ecosystem to recover is 100% eradication of the mice," said Pete Warzibok, a biologist who has worked on the Farallon Islands for more than 20 years. "Anything else is simply a stopgap measure that will not adequately address the problem."Critics argued the poison will not only kill the mice, first introduced by ships that stopped in the islands 200 years ago, but also wildlife on the island and scavengers that would feed on the carcasses of the poisoned animals."These poisons are deadly, they persist in the environment for hundreds of days and they do kill animals," said Alison Hermance, the spokeswoman for the conservation group WildCare."The situation on the Farallon Islands has existed for decades. "It's very painful, actually the most stressful thing for us doctors and especially nurses."In his twelve years at the hospital, Yatooma said he has never witnessed anything like this.Yatooma has been on the frontlines since the pandemic began, and while many people have let their guards down, he reminds everyone the virus hasn't gone anywhere. Healthcare workers haven't had a break."There has been an increase, a significant increase, in the number of patients of hospitalizations that we see," he said. "It's definitely correlated with the relaxing of restrictions that the state and county are implementing. People were not wearing masks. People continued to have large gatherings, especially indoors, and people were not socially distancing. The bowling alley off Mira Mesa Boulevard has been known for their special needs and senior leagues, and as a spot for youth bowlers to enjoy the game with family and friends.Those who love the Lanes hope it has not seen its last strike."They have probably the biggest, or the second biggest, youth program in the state. We also have a couple of national champions that bowl there," said Marci Greim, who has started a "Save Mira Mesa Lanes" GoFundMe page.Greim, a mother of two young bowlers, said Mira Mesa Lanes has always been a big advocate of college."The kids, just by participating in leagues, have a portion of their dues set aside for college scholarship money. Then, when the kids do well in tournaments, or other things like that, they are earning college scholarship money. Mira Mesa Lanes has just always welcomed the youth bowlers,” said Greim.Mira Mesa Lanes shut down on March 16 due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
