TAIPEI, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan is on high alert and taking early actions including pre-storm evacuations in expectation of typhoon Parma, barely two months after typhoon Morakot devastated the island.     More than 1,200 villagers from four counties including Nantou, Chiayi, Kaohsiung and Pingtung have been evacuated as of 1 p.m. on Sunday, in case of mudslides triggered by Parma. These people were sheltered in safer places, local authorities said.     "Taiwan has been working hard to get ready for the typhoon, in the hope of reducing people's losses. Classes in a village schools would be suspended on Monday, local media reported.     Chou Hsi-wei, head of Taipei County, said on Sunday authorities of cities, towns and counties could decide by themselves whether to suspend classes or work.     In early morning of Sunday, Taiwan's meteorological authorities issued warnings of torrential rain across the island from Sunday to Wednesday. Local observatory also forecast heavy rainstorms in northern, eastern and southermost Taiwan from Sunday to Monday.     The island's rescue authorities have prepared 70 helicopters and more than 100 ships for disaster relief operations.

SHANGHAI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China would firmly stick to its moderately easy monetary policy and concrete the recovery momentum of the country's economy, said vice governor of China's central bank on Wednesday. Su Ning, Vice Governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC) made the remarks in a meeting held in the bank's Shanghai-based headquarter, saying a proactive fiscal policy and moderately easy monetary policy were crucial for sustained growth.     Despite an initial economy recovery resulted from the government's stimulus efforts in the first half, the country still faced severe difficulties and challenges from both domestic and abroad.     In the second half, the PBOC would use a set of monetary policy mix to coordinate a "reasonable" credit structure based on market rules, and to ensure more loans to major infrastructure construction and technology innovation, Said Su.     China's economy rebounded to grow 7.9 percent in the second quarter driven by a surge of fixed-asset investment backed by government's 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package on last September.     Chinese banks lent a record 7.37 trillion yuan in the first half to shore up the economy, which sank to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Goni has brought huge rainfall to south China after it landed early Wednesday morning in Taishan of south China's Guangdong Province.     Downpours drenched most parts of Guangdong and neighboring Fujian province, with a hydrological station in Guangdong reporting precipitation of about 400 mm.     The weakening Goni is moving westward slowing and is expected to bring downpours to west Guangdong from Thursday to Friday.     Maritime affairs department in the southern island province of Hainan said Tuesday that it had issued an emergency warning to 20,000 fishing vessels in the South China Sea, calling them to harbor.     Another tropical storm, Morakot, has strengthened into typhoon and is expected to make a landfall from late Friday to Saturday in central and northern Fujian, weather forecasters said.     Local authorities have put in place emergency plans to evacuate residents amid other efforts to reduce losses from Morakot, the 8th typhoon this year.     Severe rainstorms also wreak havoc in other parts of the country Wednesday.     In Suichuan, eastern Jiangxi province, flash flood washed down five houses and killed at least three people.     Rain-related disasters also killed two in the southwestern Guizhou province and another two in neighboring Chongqing municipality.
