CARLSBAD (CNS) - The Army and Navy Academy agreed to pay .75 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a former cadet at the Carlsbad-based military school, where the cadet was allegedly sexually assaulted in 1999, the law firm representing the cadet announced today.The civil suit, filed by Irvine-based law firm Manly, Stewart & Finaldi, alleged that 60-year-old Jeffrey Barton, who was an administrator in charge of academics at the academy, molested the cadet when he was a ninth-grader in 1999, the law firm said in a statement.The lawsuit alleged that Barton drugged the cadet in May 1999 and sodomized him in a bathroom on campus.In a criminal case involving the cadet, Barton was convicted in June 2017 of five felony counts of oral copulation and one felony county of sodomy.He was sentenced to 48 years in prison in August 2017.Manly, Stewart & Finaldi also represented a former cadet of the Carlsbad-based academy in a separate civil suit in 2017. (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was killed and seven other teenagers were taken to the hospital after a rollover crash on a Carlsbad street early Wednesday morning.Carlsbad police said the solo-vehicle crash happened at around 2:15 a.m. on Carlsbad Village Drive at Valley Street.According to police, an Toyota 4-Runner SUV with eight people inside rolled over for unknown reasons. A teenage male passenger died at the scene, a lieutenant at the scene told 10News. Family members identified the 16-year-old to 10News as Jack Munday. A GoFundMe to assist the family with expenses has been started here.Police said the female driver and six other passengers survived the crash, but 10News learned three of the survivors crawled out of the wreckage and fled. Those three people returned to the scene a short time later.Three other survivors got out of the vehicle and remained at the scene, while responding firefighters freed a passenger that was trapped inside.Police said the survivors were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries "ranging from minor to serious."Police confirmed the seven survivors, including the SUV’s driver, are under the age of 18.According to police, alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash but they are looking at the possibility the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed before the rollover.Lilli O’Connell could hardly hold back the tears as she watched crews working to get the mangled SUV onto a tow truck.“We are a tight community; It’s sad, it’s really sad. I mean, 16 to 18 [years old], that can be anyone at my school. (AP) — NASCAR has cleared Kyle Larson to return in 2021, ending his long suspension for using a racial slur while playing a video racing game. “NASCAR continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion across our sport,” the sanctioning body said in an official statement. “Kyle Larson has fulfilled the requirements set by NASCAR and has taken several voluntary measures, to better educate himself so that he can use his platform to help bridge the divide in our country," NASCAR said in a press release. CAMP PENDLETON (KGTV) - Camp Pendleton marines preparing to deploy are leaving behind a piece of themselves for their children.Thanks to the American Red Cross Hug-a-Hero program the kids will have a doll of their parents to provide comfort during the long months. The dolls have a special message and a pocket for an audio recording. The Red Cross says the program is possible thanks to community donations.
