DENVER (AP) — A couple convicted of criminal charges in the so-called balloon boy hoax that fascinated the country more than a decade ago were pardoned Wednesday by the governor of Colorado.Dozens of rescue crews scrambled to save the 6-year-old boy after Richard and Mayumi Heene reported he had floated away in a homemade UFO-shaped silver helium balloon in 2009.According to the Associated Press, authorities said the couple staged the incident because they wanted publicity to pitch reality TV shows.But the child was never in the balloon. According to the AP, he was home in Ft. Collins.The couple eventually pleaded guilty, served jail time, and was ordered to pay restitution.Democratic Gov. Jared Polis says they don’t deserve to be dragged down by criminal records for the rest of their lives.“In the case of Richard and Mayumi Heene, the “balloon boy” parents, we are all ready to move past the spectacle from a decade ago that wasted the precious time and resources of law enforcement officials and the general public,” Gov. Polis said in a statement. “Richard and Mayumi have paid the price in the eyes of the public, served their sentences, and it’s time for all of us to move on. (KGTV) — The Del Mar Fairgrounds may face increased pressure to stop the Crossroads of the West gun show from selling so-called 'ghost gun' kits at its show starting later this month.The Del Mar City Council on Monday will consider passing a resolution recommending the Del Mar Fairgrounds ask the show to prohibit its vendors from selling unregulated firearm parts, components and gun-build kids. The items do not have serial numbers and can be purchased at the show without a background check or registration.The Crossroads of the West Gun Show, which begins March 14, is likely in its final year at the state-owned fairgrounds. "If they aren't legally allowed to buy a gun in California and they go across state lines and buy an unfinished frame and then build up themselves, they're going to do it," she said. DENVER – A natural gas explosion caused at least one building to partially collapse Tuesday in Denver, injuring nine people. Simon Crittle, a spokesperson for Denver Health Medical Center, said two people were transported to the hospital by ambulance after the explosion and collapse. One of the people suffered traumatic injuries in the explosion. The other person was stable Tuesday afternoon.Crittle said that several other people were being treated at the scene of the explosion and collapse and that first responders were looking for other possible victims.Denver Fire Captain Greg Pixley said the explosion was reported at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and said several buildings were damaged in the area. One person who had been trapped was rescued by firefighters.Pixley said that crews were working to put out an active fire at the scene in addition to working to reduce the chance of other explosions in the area and further collapses. He said there were no reported deaths as of 2:10 p.m.An Xcel Energy spokeswoman on scene said all of the company equipment is intact up to the meters, meaning the explosion was likely caused by a customer. Xcel is working to turn off gas remotely. The spokeswoman said the company has a distribution site at Lipan Street and Santa Fe Drive and staff at that location said they felt the explosion.Eileen Andrews, who owns the nearby Baker Neighborhood Market, said she saw a man run from the wreckage of the explosion who had his clothes blown almost entirely off his body and that the man suffered burns."I mean everything was exposed -- he barely had a couple strings left of his pants. He was completely exposed and said he didn't know what happened," she said. "It was just like the biggest, loudest boom I've ever heard."She said some men who had been working on her business' HVAC system ran over to help the man and another trapped woman.Another neighbor, Edward Scott, said he was on the phone with his insurance company at his nearby home when the explosion happened."[The insurance agent] was on the phone with me going, 'What happened, what happened?' and I said, 'I don't know, I think my house just blew up,'" Scott said.He said he was hit by wood debris from the explosion and that the shockwave from the blast was so intense he thought his own home had exploded. When he realized it was another home across the street, he said he walked over to the scene and saw a person rescued from the rubble."It was two people ... a lady. And then this guy picked her up and firemen carried her out of the house," Scott said. DENVER, Colo. - A group of teenagers is using social media to try to inspire younger generations to sign up to work at the election polls this November.The Poll Hero Project was started by a group of teens from Denver East High School as well as students from Princeton University as a way to inspire their peers to get involved.“I never really expected it to go anywhere. I mean, we don’t really have any money or really any advertising. It’s really just been using social media to get our message out,” said Leo Kamin, one of the project’s co-founders.Kamin is a 17-year-old who signed up to be a poll worker during the previous election for the first time after mother found out about the student poll worker program through the Colorado Secretary of State’s website and encouraged him to join.In Colorado, you must be 16 in order to serve as a poll worker. It is a paid position.“It really did open my eyes just to the process and how many things you have to have right,” Kamin said.Along with learning the intricacies of how the election process works, Kamin says he was able to bring his own set of skills to the polling place.“In Colorado, you can change your registration on your phone, and I was the only one of the greeters, the poll workers, who understood how to sort of explaining that on the website,” Kamin said. “I think there is that knowledge that comes from the people who have done this a lot and have voted for before, but I think there are also things that younger people bring that are valuable.”Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some areas are struggling to find enough poll workers to work on election day.Colorado has not had that problem for the most part, and places like Denver and Jefferson County say they experienced record interest this election.Still, the teens are using social media to encourage students across the country to check in with their counties to see whether they need help.One of the students who decided to sign up to be a poll worker for the first time is Ben Ginsberg. He’s still going through the training process to be ready for election day but says he’s excited about the opportunity.“I thought it was a great opportunity to help out and play my part,” Ginsberg said.Along with being a first-time poll worker, Ginsberg is also a first-time voter in this general election after participating in the primary.“I’m super excited to vote in the presidential election. It’s even more important than the primaries obviously. I think that was kind of my way to express my personal views,” Ginsberg said.He believes there is more interest in politics these days among his peers and many of his friends are excited for the opportunity to vote.Kamin is not so lucky; he missed the age deadline to be able to vote this election by just a couple of weeks. Still, Kamin says he’s excited to be able to have an opportunity to contribute.“I feel like because I can’t vote it makes it even more important to participate,” he said. “There are not many things you can do as a 17-year-old but this is one of them.”He’s still surprised by just how much popularity the project has garnered despite the fact that they have no money for advertising and have only been using social media to get their message out.Both teens will be missing school Monday and Tuesday in order to work the polls but say they hope their teachers and classmates understand the importance of the role they are playing in democracy. They hope even more teenagers will consider signing up in the future.“Sure, you may not be in charge of the country now, but you will be in the future, and this is your country. Deputies say a woman attacked a mother and daughter on a Greyhound bus that had departed from Las Vegas. According to investigators, three strangers helped to save the child's life.The bus left Las Vegas shortly after 7 a.m. Monday and was headed to San Francisco. Teresa Ann Andrade Madrigal attacked the mother and child, just 45 minutes after leaving the station in Bakersfield, authorities report."The lady had the baby in her hand," said one passenger, "...and next thing I know, I heard she has a knife."Investigators say Madrigal appeared to be delusional. They say Madrigal grabbed the child around the neck and held her at knife point. That's when the child's mother started to fight the attacker.Soon, the bus driver and two other passengers jumped into action. The mother was stabbed in the abdomen. The men were able to help get the child  away from the suspect.In total, five people were hurt. We're told Madrigal, who was speaking to herself, was initially asked to get off the bus. The driver felt that it was safe to let the woman back on the bus after speaking with her outside.Right now, the investigation into this incident is ongoing. Investigators say Madrigal also stabbed herself. The child's mother, who has not been identified, had surgery on Monday.  She is expected to make a full recovery.
