(KGTV) -- The new school year begins Monday morning for the Sweetwater Union High School District, and classes will be very different this time around for students and teachers due to the coronavirus pandemic.Starting Monday, Aug. 3, classes will be taught online, with all students equipped with district-issued computers, laptops or tablets to connect with teachers.SUHSD students will be on a daily block schedule that puts them in three classes per day with 30-45 minutes of virtual face time with teachers. Students’ remaining time will be independent study to complete coursework.District officials said the 2020-21 school year will begin with distance learning through at least Oct. 2. According to the district, the goal is to provide flexibility to begin the school year so adjustments can be made along the way.During the school year, the district plans to evaluate the possibility of a return to in-class instruction on three dates:-- Sept. 21: District will assess whether distance learning will continue after fall break.-- Nov. 30: District will assess whether distance learning will continue into second semester or potentially bring 10% of students back to schools.-- March 1: District will assess whether distance learning will continue through the end of the school year.If in-class instruction is allowed, all schools will have safety protocols in place that will be monitored. 1404

(KGTV) — Three of the country's biggest ticket sellers told Congressional members they would support a mandate to include all ticket fees up front for consumers, ESPN reports.The current industry standard is to reveal those "all-in" fees to consumers only after they input their personal information, including name, address, and email address, ESPN says. The practice has been called anti-consumer and deceptive by Congressional members.Amy Howe, Ticketmaster's chief operating officer, told the House Committee on Energy and Commerce that the total ticket price "should be disclosed from the outset, not at the end of the purchase process."Representatives from Stubhub and AXS also said the companies would support "all-in" pricing. Stubhub's general counsel Stephanie Burns told the committee that the company tried the pricing strategy in 2014 and 2015, but moved away from it because consumers found it confusing when competitors' prices appeared lower in search engines online.Committee chairman Frank Pallone, D-N.J., said he was particularly concerned about higher fees sneaking up on consumers."Millions of Americans shop on the internet for tickets," Pallone said. "In some ways, the internet has made this experience more convenient, but it has also led to consumers being ripped off as they try to navigate a ticketing industry that for too long has operated in the dark."Representatives from the three companies also touched on deceptive websites and venues holding back tickets to increase scarcity. (WNEP/CNN) -- A Pennsylvania mother and a father are charged with endangering the welfare of their two children in Lackawanna County.Investigators say the two children were knowingly left alone in the town of Dunmore for nearly three days while the mother was in Florida.Nicole Sciortino, 30, and Vincent Licciardello, 30, were both arraigned Monday morning on those neglect charges.Sciortino told police that she didn't realize it was against the law to leave her two children home alone unsupervised for an extended period of time and added that she, "didn't think it was really that bad."According to court papers, on Wednesday, March 7, Dunmore police responded to the home on Monroe Avenue after receiving a report of children who had been left alone for weeks.When officers arrived, they found a 10 year old and an 11 year old home by themselves. Police say the place was in deplorable condition, with food, boxes, pills, and other trash on the floor. The thermostat read 58 degrees.Police were able to contact the mother of the two children, Nicole Sciortino. She first told them she wasn't far away, but later admitted to police that she was in Florida. She told investigators that the children's father, Vincent Licciardello, who lives elsewhere, was watching the kids.During the investigation, police found that on Monday, March 5, Licciardello dropped the kids off at their mother's house early in the morning. Over the next three days, while their mother was in Florida, he would occasionally stop by to drop food off for the unsupervised children.WNEP-TV spoke with a few people who work in the area, who were floored to hear about the accusations.At the time of the investigation, police say one child had missed 16 days of school, while the other had missed 26 days since the start of the school year."That hurts. I'm a mom of five kids. I couldn't imagine leaving my kids for 10 minutes without an adult supervisor," said Tamra Murphy. "Who's feeding them? Who's washing their clothes? Who's making sure their homework is done? That upsets me beyond it. That hurts me.""That's insane to me," said Kaylia Riley. "I mean, at the end of the day, I couldn't even leave my dogs for three days by themselves, let alone children, especially small children. It's just mind-blowing."Sciortino and Licciardello were both charged Monday with endangering the welfare of children.
