ENSENADA, Mexico (KGTV) — A San Diego dirt bike racer is recovering tonight in Mexico after a bizarre mid-race crash with a mystery SUV.On Saturday morning, about 60 miles southeast of Ensenada, 29-year-old Josear Carrasco was racing a course he knew well. On this day, he would not finish."Just devastated. It's really hard. He's my everything, so it's hard to see him like this," said his wife, Kylie.Kylie was in a truck along the course when she got the news. Josear was in second place, nearly done with his 100-mile stretch and about to turn his bike over to a teammate. That's when he says he collided with an SUV that had driven onto the course, headed toward him. "He tried to veer off to the right ... the car veered off in same direction. Then, a head-on collision. He doesn't remember anything after that," said Kylie.Josear was discovered by spectators and a teammate, with car parts scattered nearby."Something exploded. When they found him, his gear was just melted off," said Kylie.Josear suffered second-degree burns up and down the left side of his body and broken bones in his arms, legs, shoulder and shin. He also suffered a ruptured intestine, but he was alive."Once I saw him breathing, my heart dropped ... because that's all that matters," said Kylie.Josear has already undergone several surgeries at a hospital in Ensenada. His family trying to raise money for a medical transport back to San Diego, while Mexican authorities hunt for the hit-and-run driver. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV)-- Dozens of people joined a paddle-out for the late "godfather of snowboarding" Saturday. Many thanked Jake Burton Carpenter for his legendary contribution to snowboarding. Surfers hit the waves at Swami's Surf Spot to honor a man they said changed their lives. But Jay Saling brought his other favorite board. "Two things I love most in this in the world are snowboarding and surfing, and he helped created both of those," Saling said.Saling organized the paddle-out shortly after the announcement of snowboard legend Jake Burton Carpenter's death on Wednesday. Saling carried a Burton snowboard into the waves and placed it on top of his surfboard as he paddled out.Burton is credited for reinventing the sport and culture of snowboarding. Friends and former Burton Snowboards employees now living in San Diego shared their memories with Carpenter. "At my interview, his first question was, 'Do you snowboard?' And I actually lied to him. I said, 'I did.' I was a skier. And then from that moment when he hired me, I never skied ever since, so I owe my life to Jake," former employee Mike Hoefer said. Many who knew Carpenter said he was a man who thought outside of the box. Not quite turning things upside down, just sideways."You could get on the mountain, but he turned everything sideways and just made everything more fun," surfer and snowboarder Chris Dodds said. It was so much fun that snowboarding became an Olympic sport in 1998. San Diego-born Olympian Shaun White's parents joined in the paddle-out Saturday. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A firefighter was injured Wednesday when a roof collapsed on him while battling a blaze at a North County strip mall.Crews responded to the strip mall at 945 W. Valley Parkway just before 3:20 p.m., according to Escondido Fire Department. One engine arrived to the end unit of the mall fully engulfed in flames and extending into a neighboring business, EFD said.It's not clear how the fire started. The fire appears to have originated in a shoe repair and garment cleaner business, according to Google Maps images. The business sits next door to a gun and ammo business.One firefighter was injured in the blaze when part of a roof collapsed, according to EFD. He was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment. EFD didn't reveal the extent of the firefighter's injuries.EFD added that one civilian had minor smoke inhalation and refused treatment at the scene. 899

(KGTV) — Last week, police arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting at an Escondido movie theater that left one man injured in June.The 20-year-old suspect, whose name is being withheld to protect the investigation, was arrested on July 5, Escondido Police said in a release Wednesday. Police then executed a search warrant at the Escondido resident's home.The June 28 shooting occurred at about 8:45 p.m. outside the Regal Cinema on West Valley Parkway.
