SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Californians trying to raise happy and healthy families are finding affordability a challenge, a study shows. WalletHub ranked states based on feedback from psychology, social work and child studies experts at several universities, and statistics from each region. States were given grades in categories including the cost of housing, child care, and unemployment. California ranked 19th overall. The individual category rankings are as follows: 5th: Percent of families with young kids5th: Infant mortality rate15th: Separation and divorce rate34th: Percent of families in poverty36th: Violent crime rate38th: Unemployment rate46th: Child care costs49th: Median family salary (adjusted for cost of living)50th: Housing affordability Minnesota, Massachusetts and North Dakota filled the top three spots for family-friendly states. The worst states for families were New Mexico, Mississippi and Louisiana. Housing prices, a problem for western states, were at their best levels in the Midwest. Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota and Ohio topped the list. California's median home price as of November 2018 was 7,900, Zillow reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla remains hospitalized on a ventilator but is now in stable condition, according to a family statement issued Wednesday. Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, was admitted at UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU last Thursday after experiencing difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19. The family said he required a respirator.“My dad is a fighter, and he’s fighting through this -- with the help of amazing doctors, nurses and healthcare workers who are caring for him," said the councilman's daughter Ashleigh Padilla in a statement Wednesday night."We’re hopeful that he’s reached a turning point and will be home soon," she said.No further details about his condition were given at this time.“I know he cannot wait to get back to serving the people and helping our entire community get through these tough times," his daughter said.Padilla told his constituents in a Facebook video post published March 14 that he had contracted the coronavirus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans plans to close a portion of eastbound State Route 56 overnight Thursday.According to the agency, all eastbound lanes of SR-56 at Camino Del Sur as well as the Camino Del Sur on-ramp will close Thursday from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m.The closure will take place so crews can work on the Carmel Road overcrossing.
