NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday. The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. "The City of Nanjing is working to improve the quality of life of its residents with a global initiative that has potential to create a great opportunity for some in the United States."For over a decade, Nanjing "has reached beyond the borders of the People's Republic of China to create new strategies in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, increasing the level of understanding between our two nations and stimulating U.S.- China idea exchange," he said."It is expected that this international cooperative initiative will inure to the benefit of the residents of Nanjing as well to the residents of the United States, including businesses, residents and educational institutions in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," he said.Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province in East China, has forged close ties of cooperation and partnership with Boston and Massachusetts in 2008. The city government has hammered out a series of programs to lure top talents from overseas."This is the first time for the U.S. Congress to recognize a model for a Chinese City for the partnership in entrepreneurship innovation, technology and education," Gene Hartigan, co-chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday."This will get great attention from leaders in Washington D.C. and become the model for cooperation in the future between the U.S. and China in partnership in these areas," he said. "Currently the US and Chinese government have a platform called Strategic and Economic Dialogue. This statement approved by congress will create a new dialogue in innovation and entrepreneurship between the US and China."

CHANGCHUN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Floods have left 63 people dead and 59 missing in northeast China's Jilin Province over the past two months, local authorities said Monday.More than 4 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 700,000 people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, about 62,000 houses have collapsed and 193,000 others have been damaged, along with 1.16 million hectares of cropland having been inundated, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at almost 19 billion yuan (2.8 billion U.S. dollars), it added. In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies. In the industrial city of Tonghua, torrential rains have damaged water pipelines, leaving 300,000 people without tap water for two days.Residents have largely relied on bottled water over the past 48 hours as authorities ordered 25 fire trucks to deliver water for domestic purposes aside from drinking to residential communities from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday.About 1,700 tons of water had been delivered by truck, officials said.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's health chiefs Tuesday renewed their commitment to providing the country with iodized salt and refuted concerns of excessive iodine intake.Chen Rui, an official with China's Health Ministry, said at a press conference that the benefits of iodized salt still outweighed the concerns of excessive iodine, citing the results of nationwide risk assessment of iodine intake led by the ministry. The assessment was carried out in response to claims from media and medical experts that some regions, coastal areas in particular, reported cases of excessive iodine intake since last year.Chen said iodized salt was still essential in China.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient. Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.Chen Junshi, a research fellow with China CDC involved in the assessment, said even in coastal areas the risk of iodine deficiency still loomed larger than excessive intake.

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Friday that the government would continue to regulate the housing market and resolutely crack down on speculative property investment and other unreasonable market demands. He said the government would continue to increase the supply of affordable housing for low-income families in order to consolidate the effects of the regulation over the past months. He pledged to ensure healthy development of the real estate industry and improve people's living conditions.Inspecting a low-rent housing site in Beijing, Li urged the municipal government to offer preferential policies in the areas of investment, land, and taxation to quicken the construction of affordable housing. He said that the affordable housing program should be transparent and fair in order to allow mid-and-low income residents to benefit. In the face of skyrocketing housing prices, the Chinese government has ordered a stringent credit policy to restrict speculative purchases and has increased spending to build affordable housing.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year-on-year in July, slower than the 11.4 percent growth in June, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.
