BRASILIA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The World Heritage Committee decided on Sunday to include China Danxia Landform in the World Heritage List at its 34th meeting being held in Brasilia, capital of Brazil."Danxia Landform of China" is the general name of a Serial Nomination for World Natural Heritage. This nomination consists of six geologically and geographically related Danxia Landform areas which collectively featuring the outstanding universal values of Danxia geomorphology in south-east China.The six Danxia landform areas are: Mountain Langshan and Mountain Wanfoshan (Hunan Province), Mountain Danxiashan ( Guangdong Province), Taining and Guanzhoushan (Fujian Province), Mountain Longhushan and Guifeng (Jiangxi Province), Mountain Chishui (Guizhou Province), Fangyan and Mountain Jianglangshan ( Zhejiang Province).Danxia landform, a unique type of petrographic geomorphology, could be defined as "landform consists of red bed characterized by steep cliffs." The total core area of above five regions is 73,945 hectare, and the total buffer area is 65,446 hectare.

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Beijing launched a one-month household registration survey on Sunday in preparation for the once-a-decade census of China, the world's most populous country, which begins in November.A total of 100,000 uniformed census takers will go door-to-door in Beijing from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15, along with policemen, to check each household's current residential information, said a spokesman with the sixth national population census' Beijing office.Foreigners and residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan will also be surveyed for the first time, except those on short-term business or sightseeing trips, according to a census regulation jointly issued by the State Council and the National Bureau of Statistics in May."This is because the upcoming national census seeks to survey 'every natural person' in China and Chinese citizens who live abroad but have not obtained long-term living permits," said Su Hui, director of the office.The survey aims to count the total number of Beijing residents and to correct false household registration information and provide accurate information for the sixth national census, he said.Experts say that many households do not unregister their deceased family members so they might continue collecting social insurance funds from the government. Also, some children born in violation of the country's "one child" policy were also not registered.All information collected in this survey will be kept confidential, and will not be used for other purposes, Su added.Since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, China has conducted national population censuses in 1953,1964,1982,1990 and 2000.The last census, a decade ago, set China's population at 1.29533 billion people.

ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders.The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links. BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature Monday opened its bimonthly session with a series of draft laws and amendments, including the amendment to the Criminal Law and a draft law on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) protection.The session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) continued to deliberate draft amendments to the Law on Officers in Reserve Forces, the draft People's Mediation Law, as well as the draft Law on the Application of Laws to Civil Relationships Involving Foreign Interests.Lawmakers also deliberated for the first time draft amendments to the the Law on Deputies to the People's Congress, draft amendments to the Criminal Law, the draft Law on the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the draft revision of the Water and Soil Conservation Law.The amendment to Criminal Law proposes reducing the number of crimes subject to death penalty from 68 to 55. It also gives a definition of "organization in the nature of a criminal syndicate" and lists tougher punishments for crimes by such organizations.Drink driving, intentionally defaulting on payment to employees and illegal human organ trade are to be listed as crimes in the Criminal Law, according to the amendment.The draft law on ICH protection includes a definition of ICH, mechanisms for ICH surveys, regulation of the inheritance of ICH, and penalties for its destruction.Lawmakers on Monday also heard a report on the NPC Standing Committee's research results on issues for the formulation of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015). ' The NPC, for the first time in history, completed 15 research reports on 14 major subjects from March to July to provide proposals for the formulation of the keynote plan, after Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, called for the research at the annual legislative session in March.Lawmakers discussed the constitutional reform package of Hong Kong, which refers to the amendments to the methods of selecting the region's chief executive and forming the Legislative Council in 2012.They also heard a report by the State Council on a proposal for the NPC to ratify the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.
