A four-day manhunt for the driver who mowed down a 9-year-old girl playing in her front yard is over.But the suspect's explanation for the hit-and-run is surprising.Gabriel Fordham turned himself in to Georgia authorities on Tuesday, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office said.Officials say he plowed his car into LaDerihanna Holmes before crashing into her home and then fleeing the scene on Friday.Dontaye Carter, a spokesman for Fordham's legal team, said Fordham was fighting off a carjacker when the crash happened."He was carjacked when stopped at a stop sign when a guy jumped in his car and pistol-whipped him, and he tried to fight him off," Carter said.At a news conference Wednesday, the DeKalb County Police Department said it couldn't confirm whether the carjacking claim was true, since the investigation is ongoing.Fordham has been charged with failure to maintain lane, failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, hit and run and serious injury by vehicle.LaDerihanna was outside playing with a friend when she caught just a glimpse of a dark car speeding toward her.Surveillance footage shows the car flying over the curb and onto the girl's front lawn in Lithonia, near Atlanta. LaDerihanna starts to sprint, but she can't outrun the careening car as it crashes into her and then into her house.She suffered a fractured skull and a shattered pelvis that's broken in three places."She was lifeless. I was screaming," LaDerihanna's mother, Charlotte Bolton, told CNN.LaDerihanna was hospitalized in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable, her mother said Tuesday.Bolton said even she felt the impact of the crash from inside the house."I heard a very bad sound, and my house shook like an earthquake," the mother said. "I immediately knew something was wrong. I screamed, 'My baby!' because I knew she was on the porch."She raced to the front lawn, where "a lady had gotten my baby from between the car and my house," Bolton said. "Another gentleman started doing CPR."LaDerihanna's father scooped her up and drove her to the hospital. Chris Stewart, who's representing the girl's family.It's also a small miracle that the family had security footage capturing both the crash and the back side of a man who fled the car.The idea for the camera stemmed from a theft at the home."Someone had (stolen) my son's bicycle out of the front yard, and my husband said, 'I'm going to get cameras for the house,' " Bolton said.But a few weeks ago, Bolton's husband thought the camera wasn't needed anymore and canceled the iCloud recording service."And I told him, 'We need those cameras back running.' And if it wasn't for that, we wouldn't have anything," she said.In addition to leaving LaDerihanna critically injured, the car's impact severely damaged the home."This car is deep in my house," Bolton said. "My basement is destroyed."LaDerihanna is trying to stay positive as she recovers from her extensive injuries."She's in a lot of pain, but she's in good spirits," her mother said. "She's a strong little girl. She's talking, she's laughing, she's joking. This week people across the country are enjoying time with family and celebrating the day the Native Americans and pilgrims sat down for a meal together. But the history of Thanksgiving, and the relationship between the two groups, is not that simple.“There was a lot of cultural misunderstanding, and there was some just flat out theft, and murder, and those things happened too,” said Tressa Brown with the Kentucky Heritage Council.Brown says what's taught in schools often romanticizes the first Thanksgiving and fails to acknowledge the wrongdoings against American Indians.“The stories that we perpetuate tend to make at least the dominant culture feel good, not so much for the other cultures. This is not a day of Thanksgiving for native people,” said Brown.She says Native Americans traditionally give thanks every day, rather than one set day each year. A part of Brown’s work includes traveling to schools to educate students and teachers about appropriate ways to teach and celebrate the holiday.“I think it's really important that kids be taught respect for those cultures, respect for what is sacred among other people. And not to denigrate it by dressing up and, you know, hitting your hand over your mouth to make noise and speaking in broken English,” said Brown. Brown says many don't realize that Native Americans are modernized, and they live just like everyone else.“The American Indian cultures, multiple, are vibrant, alive, thriving,” said Brown. Right here in Kentucky there is a rich Native American history. A container of screws that fell off a vehicle and littered the roadway in Jackson County, Mississippi, caused flat tires along nearly 30 miles of interstate.Mississippi Highway Patrol responded Tuesday after getting numerous calls about stranded motorists near the Pascagoula River Bridge. When officers arrived, they discovered sheet metal screws scattered across Interstate 10 West. In total, 36 passenger cars and three semis each had multiple flat tires."Wrecker response time was upwards to three hours for [motorists] waiting on tow trucks due to the number of calls for service," the Mississippi Highway Patrol said in a statement."Troopers assisted [motorists] with changing flat tires and providing lane safety" for those who were stranded.Courtney Beauvais was on her way home to Ocean Springs when she noticed that she had a flat. Her car was equipped with run-flat tires, designed to resist deflation when punctured, so she was able to exit the highway and make it home."I noticed the car wobble a little bit when I exited," she said. A Phoenix couple is accused of forcing a day laborer at gunpoint to have sex with the female suspect, police say.Phoenix police on April 8 responded to a call from a man saying he was sexually assaulted by a couple at a home. According to court documents, Brenda Acuna Aguero, 39, picked up a day laborer and told the man her husband needed help moving some items at their home. When they arrived at her house, Aguero reportedly told the man that, "it was her fantasy to have sex with a laborer." The victim initially thought Aguero was teasing, but when he realized she wasn't, he told her he was not going to have sex with her. At that point, police say, the woman's husband, 45-year-old Jorge Francisco Valenzuela, came into the room with a rifle. Valenzuela allegedly placed the rifle on the victim's chest, and "told him he was going to have sex with his wife, or he would shoot him."The victim had sex with Aguero as Valenzuela filmed video and took pictures, and allegedly directed the victim to different sexual positions.Police say Valenzuela later stole the victim’s Mexican visa and driver's license, and forced the victim to call his wife so Valenzuela could get her phone number.Valenzuela allegedly told the victim to come back the next day to get his visa and license and have sex with Aguero. He then threatened to send the video to the victim's wife if he didn't comply, records show.Later the same day, Valenzuela allegedly demanded the victim returned to his home for another sexual encounter. When the victim arrived with a friend, Valenzuela sent the pictures to the victim’s wife.The victim contacted police, who arrested Valenzuela and Aguero at their home. They both allegedly admitted their actions, with Valenzuela saying they had done this before with about four other men.They are being held on a 0,000 bond for sexual assault. 1871
