SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a man who was trying to sell basketball tickets Friday robbed a victim near San Diego State University as the NCAA basketball tournament was underway.The robbery happened about 11 a.m. in the east alley of 5100 College Ave., police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santas are taking a big hit in 2020 for two big reasons: the pandemic and politics.During a typical December, Santas in San Diego would pop up at events, fundraisers, malls, parties and more. FORBS is the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, and the group meets and trains year-round to prepare the best Santas for the holiday season. This year, even these pros can’t find work.There are two big reasons for this. The first is one that is impacting most industries right now: the pandemic. Events and parties are canceled, and malls are hurting. At a mall, Santa usually would go through a line of kids, put them on his lap, and ask them what they want for Christmas this year. AB 5 was publicized as a bill that would help independent contractors like rideshare drivers, but it also impacts mall Santas. Under Assembly Bill 5, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) and passed this year, those workers are reclassified as employees with insurance and other benefits.FORBS members fear companies won’t want to hire Santas as employees.“What’s that mean? It just means Santa is an employee instead of an independent contractor. Santas will be getting a paycheck with holdings taken out of it,” said one Santa.This means Santas who train year-round for this month have to adapt. Some are turning to virtual meet and greets to make ends meet.“Virtual is definitely for me the savior of the year,” said a Santa who recently got booked up with back-to-back virtual greetings. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State lawmakers are considering an overhaul to the CRV recycling program on bottles and cans that would make drink-makers responsible for setting up a system to collect the containers they produce.Redemption centers that sort cans and bottles are the best form of recycling for the environment, yielding more high-quality usable materials than curbside recycling in blue bins. But across the state, more than half of the redemption centers have closed over the last six years. With fewer locations to drop off recyclables, only two-thirds of the 5 and 10-cent bottle deposits actually get redeemed, according to Consumer Watchdog.“This old model has cratered. It’s actually on the verge of collapse,” said consumer advocate Liza Tucker. Part of the industry’s struggles has to do with China’s decision to limit the recycled materials it purchases from the U.S. Before that policy, the City of San Diego earned about million a year in revenue from its recycling program. Under a contract signed last year, the city now pays outside companies about million a year to collect those recyclables.A bill debated by state lawmakers Wednesday would create a new bottle deposit system similar to one in Oregon. Beverage makers would become responsible for helping consumers recycle, with oversight by the state.“When you put it on industry to take responsibility, and you set a redemption goal and have strong state oversight, they then have an incentive to run it right,” said Tucker.In Oregon, almost all stores are required to take back containers and issue 10 cents per item. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sitting in the heart of San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park has 65 miles of trails, as well as boating and picnic areas. You might call it a hikers and bikers paradise, as it provides eight thousand acres of pure outdoor enjoyment for more than two million visitors each year. "Mission Trails Regional Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country," says Jennifer Morrissey, the Executive Director of the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation.Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in mid-March, the park has seen a big increase in visitors, which is great. But it has also created a few problems. "Because we have so many more people," says Morrissey, "we are seeing that there is more wear and tear on the trails."Prior to the pandemic, some of the park's hundreds of volunteers would help maintain the trails. But for the time being, that program has been suspended. "Unfortunately, we don't have volunteers at the park right now. They do everything, from helping on the trails, to staffing the visitors center, to beautification projects. So right now, within the park, there is a lot of work that needs to be done."That work takes money. And that is why Morrissey says 'Giving Tuesday' is the most important fundraiser of the year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven people are dead after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria linked to black tar heroin use in San Diego.County health officials said nine people who injected black tar heroin were admitted to county hospitals between Oct. 2 and Nov. 24 with a bacterial infection called myonecrosis, which is a severe soft tissue infection that destroys muscle. Of those victims, seven have died. The patients range in age from 19 to 57 years old.RELATED: Sixth death reported during San Diego's current flu season“People who use black tar heroin are not only at higher risk of dying from an overdose, but also more prone to developing myonecrosis and wound botulism,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer.One confirmed case of wound botulism linked to black tar heroin use was also reported in October — the first confirmed case in the county this year.Wound botulism, which attacks the body’s nerves, is also linked to heroin use. People who inject illicit narcotics like black tar heroin are at a higher risk of developing both infections, the county says.
