SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris projected to take the White House, Harris will have to resign her seat in the U.S. Senate.The power to fill that seat would fall to Governor Gavin Newsom, and the political jockeying for his pick is well underway.“This is one of the best jobs in American politics, one of the most prominent jobs in American politics and every California political leader wants it,” said UC San Diego political science chair Thad Kousser.Kousser expects Newsom will want to make history with the diversity of his pick, should he have the opportunity.Others are thinking along the same lines. Groups like Equality California have sent the governor a list of their preferred LGBTQ candidates, which would be a first for California.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez tweeted out her own list Friday of Latino candidates, another potential first for the state.“We are the largest demographic in this state, and growing,” she wrote. “It’s time we have a Latino/a US Senator.”Political analyst Laura Fink says the governor is going to have to balance a lot of competing interests.“First and foremost, what's going to be best for California? And then of course, what's going to be best for Governor Newsom moving forward as he looks toward his political ambitions,” Fink said, referring to the possibility that Newsom could run for president.There have been dozens of names floated as potential picks, including California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra.Both are sons of Mexican immigrants who would be the first Latino senators in California history.But don’t pencil either in just yet, according to Fink.“Kamala Harris is leaving one of only 26 women in the Senate. That's one out of four. Last time I checked, [women] are north of 50 percent of the population. So that is something that will need to come into consideration,” she said.Rep. Karen Bass is another top contender. She’s the head of the Congressional Black Caucus.There’s also State Senator Toni Atkins of San Diego, who could also make history as California’s first openly gay senator.“She's been the first a lot of times,” Fink said. “First lesbian Speaker of the State Assembly. First Madam President Pro Tem of the State Senate. This would be another first for her should she ascend to that seat.”Atkins declined to say if she was interested in the job or being vetted.“Right now, my focus is on the work before us, and the path ahead of us," she said in a statement to ABC 10News.Atikins said she was “focused on the outcome of the election and our state Senate races, looking forward to a Biden/Harris administration, and continuing our work here in California.”The power to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat comes from the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. States have their own laws that shape the process.Five states require Senate vacancies to be filled by a special election. Nine states allow the governor to appoint a replacement, but require a special election shortly after.The remaining 36 states, including California, allow governors to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of the term.Newsom’s pick would serve out the remaining two years on Harris’s term, then go up for reelection in 2022 as an incumbent. Incumbency carries significant advantages in name recognition, fundraising and image, said Kousser.“You are getting that news coverage. Somebody is probably playing you on Saturday Night Live for two years, and that elevates you above all the other contenders,” he said.With California a reliably blue state, experts say Newsom’s pick could hold the job for decades. 3685

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  Pacific Trails Middle School student Kevin Luo has been crowned the winner of the 2018 countywide spelling bee.The 8th grader won the bee at 12:30 p.m. after a grueling three and a half hours of spelling. This year's winning word was gradine, which is "a low step or ledge, especially one at the back of an altar."Last year's winner was also from Pacific Trails Middle School. Yash Hande advanced to the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Although he spelled several words correctly, Yash didn't advance to the finals due to his score on the written test. Watch the entire bee in the player below:  680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While Michelin decided to postpone its annual award of stars to California restaurants this year due to the pandemic and wildfires, undercover eaters did find several "discoveries" across the state.The new-found culinary delights were announced as part of Michelin Guide's "Family Meal" livestream to celebrate the resilience of restaurants and raise money for the California Association of Food Banks.In San Diego, five restaurants pleasantly surprised guide inspectors were Tuetano Taqueria in San Ysidro, Morning Glory in Little Italy, Dija Mara in Oceanside, Soichi Sushi in University Heights, and Sushi Tadokoro in Old Town.Inspectors said Tuetano Taqueria Chef Priscilla Curiel’s guisados "are every inch the equal of Baja’s—down to the fair prices and hefty portions (and without the long traffic lines on your way home)." The guide also hailed the restaurant's beef birria that is topped with a bone filled with buttery marrow on top of the taco.Morning Glory's soufflé pancakes are "worth waking up for," according to the guide, and dishes like fried rice with pork belly and eggs and potatoes au gratin are "a great riff on tradition."Indonesian stop Dija Mara serves up creative cocktails and delicious nasi goreng (fried rice with shrimp, pork belly, chicken, and the yolk of a sunny egg) and charred eggplant with smoked tomato sambal and crispy fried shallots, inspectors said.Soichi impressed with its sushi offerings, including its pike mackerel, kampachi, and sea bass dishes. Michelin says Soichi's shirumono fish soup is also a must before trying out the restaurant's green tea ice cream.Inspectors say Sushi Tadokoro's omakase is a must-try, especially the sushi joint's oysters and scallops. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego couple was stuck in Ecuador after the country canceled all travel due to the Coronavirus. After several days of travel, the couple is finally back in their home. A few days ago, Albert "Ace" Elliott was not sure if he and his wife Mindy would ever make it back to their Ocean Beach home. "Without any warning at all, we hear that Ecuador has closed down the country," Elliott said. "No bus travel, no plane travel." For the last ten years, the couple has spent three months of the year in a small surf town in Ecuador. The Elliotts were supposed to fly back on March 31, 2020. But with the pandemic situation, they were stuck. Their flights and back-up flights were all canceled. They called the United States Embassy to see if they could somehow make it home. On Thursday, they were told to leave the next morning. The problem? Ecuador now has a 2 pm to 5 am curfew. Streets and homes are being sprayed down twice a day. Transportation is limited in their rural town. "Ecuador is going after this thing very aggressively. They're not messing around," Elliott said. At 5:01 am Friday, March 27, 2020, they jumped in a taxi. Four hours later, they made it to the airport. "Whether we are on the plane or not, it's just, show up and hope kind of," Elliott said. "So we go up, and our names are on the list. So we were like, OK, we get to go into the airport."They met another American in line, who told them he showed up yesterday, but there was no plane. He became somewhat discouraged. "They said it's a 12 o'clock flight supposedly," Elliott said. "It's 11:30, and there's nothing. Everybody's just sitting around looking, and around the corner, there comes a plane. And we said, Wow! There's a plane!"They were first flown into Miami. But they had no idea how to get back home. When they asked the kiosk for options, it was either 0 to San Diego the next day or to Los Angeles in an hour. They chose the latter."We got to Los Angeles, and from there, we got a rental car and drove home," Elliott sighed. "We made it home."The relief in his voice said it all. Elliott said they were treated well in Ecuador and throughout the trip. But the uncertainty was unbearable. As a surfer, it is difficult to stay away from the beach. But Elliott said for the safety of himself and his community, he will continue to self-quarantine. "I feel pretty confident that we are OK, but we're just going to have to hang out at home again," Elliott said. "Our lives are going to be just about sitting around, but that's what you got to do." 2569
