The situation has doctors concerned.“You could possibly have both and we don’t know how bad it will be if you have both,” said Dr. Richard Pan, a pediatrician and California state senator. “Many physicians and scientists are concerned because both of the viruses attack your lungs and heart.”California already had its first flu death this season and Pan is pleading with the public to get the flu shot this year.It's unknown how someone who had COVID-19 will react with the flu.“Even if they were asymptomatic, will the flu be a lot worse for somebody who already had COVID? Because of the damage COVID already did to the lungs and heart that perhaps the patient is not fully recovered from,” said Pan.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has ordered extra flu vaccines. They're widely available now and it's recommended you get one before the end of October.Normally, vaccine rates for the flu are around 40%. Pan says it should be double that.“If you have someone who is not vaccinated, then they're going to be much more likely to transmit that flu virus to the person that had COVID,” said Pan.Pan also says it's going to be difficult to figure out if you have the flu or COVID-19 or both, without testing.Make sure you isolate if you have any symptoms. You can spread both the flu and COVID-19 before you develop symptoms.It takes two weeks after the flu vaccine to develop antibodies.Some hope the U.S. flu season will be milder because of mask wearing, hand washing, and social distancing. WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — An Ohio man who flew to Palm Beach County in order to smoke a joint with President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago ended up under arrest instead, according to a sheriff's office report.The report says 27-year-old Tyler Jon Marrone of Columbus, Ohio, arrived at Palm Beach International Airport on April 18, the same day the president was hosting?Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Palm Beach.Marrone said he found a credit card that he thought was a gift from God so: "I bought myself a plane ticket to Florida to go see the President," the report states.A detective investigating the case said Marrone intended to drive to Mar-a-Lago, walk in and talk to Mr. Trump about "the static and frequency feedback that I constantly hear emanating from my basement and from fans and in my head." He wanted to figure out what they are saying, the report noted.Marrone also admitted that he had been kicked out of the Supreme Court Building in Ohio as well as several courthouses, according to the report.It was decided that Marrone met criteria for the Baker Act, which allows for an individual to be involuntarily committed.An investigator said while checking Marrone's bag a white substance was discovered that later tested positive for methamphetamine. The sheriff's office charged Marrone with possession of a schedule II substance. 1400

Pizza Hut is banking on its customers to say, "Cold beer."Pizza Hut announced on Wednesday that beer delivery will be available at 100 of its Arizona and California locations. The company said beer delivery is part of a nationwide pilot program. The beer will be stored in special coolers to keep it cold during delivery. Coors Light, Blue Moon and Miller High Life will be among the offerings. Customers who order a six-pack in some Arizona markets will have their delivery fee waived. "Nothing complements an oven-hot pizza like an ice-cold beer," said Zipporah Allen, CMO, Pizza Hut. "In addition to our extensive delivery network, many Pizza Hut restaurants are already licensed to serve and distribute beer, without third party services, additional fees, or extended wait times. Expanding the pilot program is a natural way for Pizza Hut to get our customers the perfect pizza and beer combo they're craving, delivered right to their doors."  Pizza Hut said it currently offers beer delivery at participating restaurants in Phoenix, Tucson, Glendale, Prescott, and Winslow in Arizona, along with participating restaurants in Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Riverside, Sacramento, Santa Barbara and Santa Clara in California. When you're facing a medical emergency, you trust your life to the doctors at in the emergency room. Those doctors sometimes have just seconds to make life or death decisions. Four in Your Corner is giving you an inside look as to what it's like to be an ER doctor."I love the pace of things and it takes a certain person to be an ER doctor," Dr. Keith Burley, who works in Cape Coral Hospital's emergency room, said/ "Emergency medicine is a true team sport. It takes the whole department to really resuscitate someone who is very sick.""Say someone comes in in cardiac arrest. They come in right through our trauma bay doors. They're dropped into one of our resuscitation rooms. Our team organizes very quickly. Everyone knows their jobs," Dr. Burley said.\In cases like this, techs will be running IVs; nurses will be hooking up defibrillation pads. Pharmacists will be running drugs. Staff will be trying to find out a patient's name. Dr. Burley said it's all about balancing quickness with efficiency while making sure patients are safe during triage."It's very important we triage effectively, making sure we point out and pick up the really sick people early on so we dedicate most of our resources to those sick people," Dr. Burley said. "We do need to triage because we have limited resources we need to effectively implement."Dr. Burley said when he sees a patient, he's trained to think worst case-scenario first."So someone coming in with a headache, we think, could this be a stroke? Could this be a subarachnoid hemorrhage? Could this be something else going on? Before we think it's just a headache," he said.Dr. Burley has known he's wanted to be a doctor since he was four years old after he was in a life-changing, dangerous situation."Like a good Canadian, I was tobogganing down a hill. We were going down the hill and my brother bailed. We continued to go down the hill and I hit a tree with my head," he said.He had a fractured skull and lost hearing in his left ear."I was seen by ER doctors, trauma doctors, a pediatric neurologist, had multiple MRIs," he said. "From that point on, as a young child, I always wanted to be a doctor."He said one of his most bizarre cases was just hours before Hurricane Irma hit. A dog was brought into the ER with it's eye hanging out."I'm not a veterinarian and I don't pretend to be one. I have a dog but it's a little out of my realm," Dr. Burley said. "We placed a pressured dressing and one of the staff members was able to call around to get a vet to see that dog just before the storm."For that dog and family, it was a happy ending, but Dr. Burley said the hardest part about emergency medicine are the days he deals with death and dying."It takes a certain person to deal with death and dying every day and then come back. It's a resiliency characteristic that all the ER staff have," Dr. Burley said.Whether their patients survive or not, the doctors have to learn to compartmentalize -- going from patient to patient until the end of their eight to 10 hour shift."We'll see a pediatric drowning, and then the next case we'll see someone with an eyeball injury, or someone with a simple laceration, and we have to give that patient the same amount of attention we gave the other patient and reset," he said."It's a privilege to be in a discipline where you get to see someone on their worst day of their entire life, and if you can make that a little better, you've done your job," he said.Dr. Burley said to unwind, he spends a lot of time at the beach and kite surfing. 3562

  

While many businesses shut down temporarily due to COVID-19, zoos and aquariums couldn’t fully close because animals still need to be taken care of.However, with little to no visitors during what’s normally the busiest time of the year, some are facing tough times and getting creative.“It’s a lot of work,” said Patty Wallace, an Animal Keeper at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.“We feed all of them about three times a day, about 40 pounds each of grass hay, about six pounds of grain per hippo, and also some fruits and vegetables for training and nourishment. So they get lots of variety,” Wallace explained. That’s just the hippos, which are part of a new exhibit the zoo opened during the shutdown.“Opening a brand new exhibit is normally hard enough,” said Bob Chastain, the President and CEO of the zoo.With large groups and traditional presentations considered unsafe, the zoo pivoted. “Now, what we do instead is we’re grabbing random people and taking them back behind the scenes, letting them help us with the everyday things we’re doing,” Chastain said.Letting kids help feed the hippos and other animals, up close and personal.“We are trying to adjust and we would like to share our hippos,” Wallace said. “But because we don’t want crowds, we do it in small bursts.”Back in spring, zoos and aquariums were told to close.“All of them have had a period of two to four months of closure. Some are still closed,” said Dan Ashe, President and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. AZA is a nonprofit that represents over 240 of these businesses.“When they’re closed they’re not really closed, because they have to continue caring for the animals,” Ashe said. That’s what makes zoos and aquariums unique.“The essential ingredient in success is a guest,” he said. Even with no guests, the work doesn’t stop, which has put some in financial distress. “We have had some that have been on the verge of closure.”Ashe said about 20% of its members are in a weak financial position, so zoos got creative to keep guests interested. “The San Antonio Zoo started with the idea of a drive-thru zoo,” Ashe said.At Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, they made use of social media. “Our social media team, like many around the country, really ramped up,” Chastain said.Now as they begin to reopen their gates, they face a whole new set of challenges. “Almost every zoo in the country had to revamp and figure out how to do timed tickets, because it was one of the major requirements,” Chastain said.Timed ticketing, one way traffic, cashless exchange -- these were all concepts zoos and aquariums had to adapt to.“All over the zoo there are marks that help people stay away from each other,” Chastain said.Even with sold out tickets, the crowds are nothing like they used to be. And many fundraising events had to be canceled or postponed with new capacity limits.“Our guess is for the next 12 months, we won’t have those large crowds,” he said.But families continue to come to see the giraffes, look at the penguins, or feed Zambezi and Kasai, the hippos.“It’s been a challenge, but a lot of fun,” Wallace said. 3105
