SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County leaders and members of the San Diego Foundation on Thursday announced the start of a new initiative that invests in community-led efforts looking to increase racial equity and generational wealth for Black San Diegans.The Black Community Investment Fund already has more than million attached to it -- funding community leaders are looking to share with organizations within the Black community.Mark Stuart, president and CEO of the San Diego Foundation, said, “Decades and decades the Black community has been held back in San Diego and not of their own doing, it’s by others.”To be considered for a grant, a nonprofit organization must meet one of four pillars.The first being education, as they are looking for projects that address systemic educational challenges in schools. Some of this funding will be used for scholarship opportunities.The second pillar is employment. Grants will be given to projects that support workforce training programs and help pay for paid internships. They want to help drive diversity in different career fields.The third pillar is entrepreneurship, as they’re looking for organizations that will help mentor and financially support new businesses.The last pillar is housing, with the hopes that money will go to organizations that will help members of the Black community buy homes.“Redlining in San Diego happened in 1936. It was outlawed decades later, but families are still feeling those effects of where they live and where they can apply for mortgages and put down their roots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County health officials reported Friday 11 hospitalizations due to vaping. Those who have been hospitalized range from 17 to 70 years old, according to County of San Diego Communications Specialist Tom Christensen. The illnesses come as U.S. health officials urge people to stop vaping until they can determine the cause of serious breathing illnesses. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and vomiting. Some 450 cases and as many as five deaths have been identified in 33 states, including California. However, many of those who were sickened said they had been vaping THC. There's been a split among public health experts about the value of vaping nicotine. Some argue e-cigarettes are not as lethal as conventional cigarettes and can be a valuable aide to smokers trying to kick the habit But others say studies have not established that adult smokers who try vaping end up quitting smoking long term. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in Hillcrest are worried homeless encampments will start more fires in the area.Back in March, a canyon underneath the Vermont Street Bridge went up in flames. Fire crews say it was started from an encampment. Marina Macklin knows that problem all too well. "You're very afraid of the fires," said Macklin. "Because they move really quickly out there because it's so dry." MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodNearly two months later, debris from the Vermont Street Bridge remains in the canyon. "They cleaned it up? No." said Macklin. "It's all still there, it's all laying down there."According to the University Heights Community Association, the canyon west of the bridge is owned by Caltrans. The east side is city property. Councilman Christopher Ward's office says they've been working to clean it. "If they say they're cleaning it up they're taking their time," said Macklin. "Why?" She says cleaning it won't solve the problem. "They go down there, set up their camps, somebody starts a fire, and they leave for a while," said Macklin."The city might go down there and do a little bit of stuff and then as soon as it's all clear and they feel safe the homeless go back in there again."Councilman Ward's office said they've already added more security guards to the Hillcrest Market area. "Security guards up here don’t do anything for the canyon," said Macklin. "I don’t even think they're supposed to go there. Is the city gonna hire security guards to go down into the canyon? I don’t think so." 1668

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are investigating Monday a woman's report that she was held against her will in Rancho Pe?asquitos.A woman arrived at a home on Caminito Cuadro at 10:45 a.m. and said she had been kidnapped and held captive in a neighboring house, police said. The location is in a residential area near SR-56 and Carmel Mountain Road.Neighbors told 10News they saw a naked woman covered in a bedsheet leave the home.The woman was taken to a nearby police station for an interview, police said.10News is monitoring developments in this story. 569

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue Thursday pulled a man to safety who fell 30 feet into a trench on the grounds of a work site at UC San Diego. According to the department, the incident happened just before 3 p.m. on Voit Drive at Matthews Lane. Crews used a pulley system to get the worker, a man in his 20s, out of the trench. He was then taken to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of blunt-force injuries and burns he received when he landed on a steam pipe. His condition is unknown at this time. RELATED: 1 dead, 4 injured in accident at construction site at UC San DiegoNearby workers and an officer were able to climb down and stay with the worker until he could be safely lifted out of the trench.The incident comes after one of five workers injured in a construction site accident died on the UC San Diego campus in July of 2019.
