As summer winds down, doctors across the country are warning flu season is fast approaching. Many are watching Australia to see what may happen here when flu season arrives."Where Australia is obviously in the Southern Hemisphere, they're in winter while we’re in summer. We look at their flu season as kind of a six-month predictor of how ours is going to turn out," says Dr. Kenny Banh, the assistant dean of undergraduate medical education at UCSF-Fresno.The number of flu cases in Australia has taken a dramatic dip compared to last year. Dr. Banh says it's unclear if the U.S.'s flu rates will be as low as Australia's.A lot of it has to do with coronavirus precautions that people are taking, Banh hypothesizes."That's what we predict. It's not really so much a change in vaccination rates as much as the social distancing and all the preventative steps of coronavirus that are having the same effect of spreading any disease, including influenza," says Dr. Banh.Doctors say strict measures in Australia to protect people from COVID-19, such as physical distancing, wearing masks and hand washing, have helped prevent the spread of the virus and, incidentally, the flu. Now, some are wondering whether the United States will also see a drop in flu cases this winter."Seeing that they have a drop in influenza, we will certainly have a small influenza season. The issue is Australia is approaching, and the U.S. is approaching coronavirus very different. Their rates are different and they have a much lower per capita infection rate than we have in the U.S. for various reasons," says Dr. Banh.Australia has taken a broader, nationwide approach to protecting people against COVID-19, unlike in the United States, where each state has implemented different restrictions. That's one reason why Dr. Tanya Altmann with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends every person, 6 months of age and older, gets a flu vaccine."I think this winter, it may be hard to differentiate between the flu and COVID-19 because so many of the symptoms-- cough, fever, aches, chills, are very similar. So by getting the flu vaccine and decreasing the chance your child has influenza, that will help us figure it out," says Dr. Altmann.Dr. Banh says Australia's plummeting flu rates and nationwide protective measures from COVID-19 will hopefully encourage many here in the United States to take the necessary precautions to keep everyone as healthy as possible this winter. 2470

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Thursday that it has expanded its list of people who are at an increased risk of getting severely ill from COVID-19.While everyone is at risk of contracting the novel coronavirus, some people are more likely than others to become severely ill, meaning they may require hospitalization, intensive care or a ventilator to help them breathe, or they may even die.Older adults and people with underlying medical conditions remain at increased risk for severe illness, but now the CDC has further defined age- and condition-related risks. Before, the CDC said those 65 and older were at an increased risk of severe illness. Now, the CDC says it has removed the specific age threshold from the older adult classification. The agency now warns that among adults, risk increases steadily as you age, and it’s not just those over the age of 65 who are at increased risk for severe illness. The CDC says age is an independent risk factor for severe illness, but risk in older adults is also in part related to the increased likelihood that older adults also have underlying medical conditions. The CDC has also updated its list of underlying medical conditions that increase risk of severe illness. After reviewing reports, studies and various other data sources, the CDC found there is consistent evidence these specific conditions increase a person’s risk of severe COVID-19 illness:· Chronic kidney disease· COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)· Obesity (BMI of 30 or higher)· Immunocompromised state (weakened immune system) from solid organ transplant· Serious heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies· Sickle cell disease· Type 2 diabetesThe CDC says these changes increase the number of people who fall into higher risk groups. An estimated 60% of American adults have at least one chronic medical condition and obesity is one of the most common underlying conditions that increases one’s risk for severe illness – with about 40% of U.S. adults considered obese. The more underlying medical conditions people have, the higher their risk. The CDC also clarified the list of other conditions that “might” increase a person’s risk of severe illness, including additions such as asthma, high blood pressure, neurologic conditions such as dementia, cerebrovascular disease such as stroke, and pregnancy.A report published Thursday further adds to the growing body of research on the risk for pregnant women. Researchers found pregnant women were significantly more likely to be hospitalized, admitted to the intensive care unit, and receive mechanical ventilation than non-pregnant women. However, pregnant women were not at greater risk for death from COVID-19.“Understanding who is most at risk for severe illness helps people make the best decisions for themselves, their families, and their communities,” said CDC Director Robert Redfield MD. “While we are all at risk for COVID-19, we need to be aware of who is susceptible to severe complications so that we take appropriate measures to protect their health and well-being.”Protecting yourself, your family, and your communityThe CDC says every activity that involves contact with others has some degree of risk right now. Knowing if you are at increased risk for severe illness and understanding the risks associated with different activities of daily living can help you make informed decisions about which activities to resume and what level of risk you will accept. This information is especially critical as communities begin to reopen.Officials recommend that everyone do their part to implement prevention strategies, such as focusing on activities where social distancing can be maintained, washing your hands frequently, limiting contact with and disinfecting commonly touched surfaces or shared items, and wearing a cloth face covering when you are around people you do not live with, especially when it is difficult to stay 6 feet apart or when people are indoors."By taking these steps, you can help protect yourself, your loved ones, and others around you, including those most vulnerable to severe illness," the CDC writes. 4219

ATLANTA — Typically voters in other states don't typically pay attention to elections in other states. But that is not the case with the Jan. 5 Georgia runoff with control of the United States Senate on the line. WHAT'S AT STAKE Two Senate seats are up for grabs. Currently, Republicans control both of them and if they win reelection in one of them they will control the Senate for the next two years. If Democrats sweep both races, Democrats will control the Senate for two years. The outcome will determine how much political power President-elect Joe Biden has. Having control of the Senate would give Biden more ability to confirm nominees and pass progressive bills, which includes COVID economic relief. EARLY VOTING On Monday, early voting got underway with thousands casting their ballot in Georgia. 816

At least seven people have been killed and six attackers "neutralized" Friday in Burkina Faso after attacks on the national army headquarters and the French Embassy, a government minister said. It's not yet clear who was behind the violence in the West African nation's capital, Ouagadougou.France's special envoy to Africa's Sahel region, Jean-Marc Chataigner, urged people to avoid the city center in a tweet referring to a "terrorist attack."Rémi Dandjinou, Burkina Faso's minister of communication, told CNN that an explosive device was used in the attack at the General Staff of the Armed Forces. At least five people were killed and two attackers "neutralized" there, he said.Four attackers were also "neutralized" and two Burkina Faso security members killed at the French Embassy, according to Dandjinou. He cautioned that the death toll might change.A spokesman for the French Ministry of Defense told CNN the situation at the embassy was under control.Freelance journalist Yacouba Ouédraogo, who is in Ouagadougou, told CNN the shooting had stopped and that the people who attacked the army headquarters wore Burkinabé army clothes.A government statement urged people to keep calm and avoid areas where there might be gunfire. The French Embassy earlier said on Facebook that attacks were underway there and at the French Institute, a cultural organization about a mile away.France's ambassador to Burkina Faso, Xavier Lapdecab, urged people via Twitter to act with "absolute precaution" as the attack was ongoing.Burkina Faso's national police warned people to move away from areas around the "vicinity of the Prime Ministry -- and the United Nations roundabout" in a post on its Facebook page. "The specialized units of the defense and security forces are in action," it said. The Prime Minister's office later posted on Facebook that it was not affected by the attack. The US Embassy urged people to seek shelter."Attacks are reported to be ongoing in downtown Ouagadougou, in the Koulouba area. The affected area includes the Chief of Staff Headquarters. Avoid downtown Ouagadougou. Shelter in place. Monitor local media for updates," it said on Twitter.France has a military presence in Burkina Faso as part of Operation Barkhane, which was launched in 2014 to combat jihadist activity across the Sahel region. The West, particularly France, considers Burkina Faso a key ally in the fight against al Qaeda in the region. The country was formerly known as the Republic of Upper Volta when it was established in 1958 as a self-governing colony under France. It gained full independence in 1960.It's not the first time that sites in the capital have come under attack. An attack by gunmen last year on a restaurant in Ouagadougou left at least 18 people dead, including two attackers. The victims were of several different nationalities. That assault echoed a similar one in 2016 on a cafe and hotel popular with Western diplomats in the same district of the city that left 29 dead. Responsibility for that attack was claimed by an al Qaeda affiliate, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.Later that year a jihadist assault on the Grand-Bassam beach resort killed 16 in neighboring Ivory Coast.  3206
