NATIONAL CITY — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Trash is increasing along San Diego freeways and homelessness appears to one of the driving factors, Caltrans reports.Caltrans officials held a news conference Thursday to raise awareness of the growing problem and encourage people to do the right thing. While Caltrans has no statistics, the agency says its crews are seeing more homeless encampments along local freeways, especially through urban areas, and officials believe that's contributing to the increasing litter. "The encampments in the right of way do generate trash," said Mario Orso, Project Director for Caltrans in District 11, which covers San Diego and Imperial Counties. He stood along an on-ramp to I-805 in National City as it was being cleaned by a contracted litter crew. Orso and other Caltrans officials said along with more homeless encampments producing trash, the problem appears to be on the rise from drivers as well, especially those transporting loads of trash or refuse to landfills without properly tying down their loads. San Diego is not alone, Orso said, as Caltrans officials up and down the state are holding news conferences to increase awareness and encourage people to act responsibly.Orso said trash pickup along freeways puts those who have to clean it up, like Caltrans workers, contractors and corrections inmates, at risk. Caltrans says most of the trash is in metro areas along the 5 and 805.They're urging volunteers to get involved through the Adopt a Highway program; helping clean up a section of highway on their choosing on a periodic basis. 1589

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church looks to move forward as the investigation continues into what caused the church to catch fire.On Sunday, their temporary place of worship was right across the street from the church right in the Milwaukee Area Technical College auditorium. This was their first church service since Tuesday afternoon's massive fire that destroyed their historic church."We're all reminding each other, the church is God's people. NASA has released satellite images showing how dark it is at night for areas impacted by Hurricane Michael. The images show the lighting from Oct. 6 compared to Oct. 12. The images show areas such as Panama City, Fla. and Tallahassee were much darker on Oct. 12 than on Oct. 6. Even towns in parts of Alabama and Georgia have also gone dark. Officials in Florida have said that it would likely take until Oct. 24 before the power is 95 percent restored. At its peak, 2.5 million were without power in Georgia, Alabama and Florida. There are 35,000 employees from power companies across the United States in the Southeast working to restore power.  675

NASSAU COUNTY, Long Island — A man allegedly faked his own death in order to avoid being sentenced in two open cases, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's office.Officials said Robert Berger, 25, used his attorney to provide a county prosecutor with a fake death certificate. The document had typos, which tipped off officials, according to the statement from the DA's office.“Typos and formatting errors gave up what we allege is a forged death certificated that this defendant used to avoid accountability for other crimes,” District Attorney Madeline Singas said in the statement released this week. “Submitting fake documents to prosecutors is always a bad idea, and while he’d have been caught regardless, failure to use spell check made this alleged fraud especially glaring.”In 2018, officials said Berger pleaded guilty to charges related to his possession of a stolen Lexus; he also pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny for attempting to steal a pickup truck.On Oct. 22, 2019, attorneys for Berger told the court their client had died and provided the court with a New Jersey Death Certificate, stating the defendant died by suicide.The attorney said Berger's fiancé provided them with the document.Upon inspection of the certificate, officials said the font size and type were not consistent in the document, and the word “Registry” in the department name was misspelled as “Regsitry."After calling to verify the certificate with officials in New Jersey, investigators confirmed the certificate was fraudulent.A copy of the false death certificate was also provided to officials in Suffolk County, where Berger also had a pending criminal case, officials said.After the discovery, Berger was arrested on Nov. 14, 2019, in Pennsylvania and was held for charges including providing a false identity to law enforcement.Berger was arraigned Tuesday and is due back in court on July 29. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A National City road was drenched Sunday morning after police say a woman slammed into a fire hydrant, sending water spewing into the air. The crash happened on the 200 block of Palm Avenue around 3 a.m. According to police, the woman lost control of her car and crashed into the hydrant. She was later taken away in handcuffs, but it’s unclear at this time if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. 446
