BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday watched a classical Peking Opera show along with other audience in Beijing.The opera "Women General of Yang Family", which was staged at the Mei Lanfang Theatre, starred three generations of artists with the China National Peking Opera Company (CNPOC).The opera, set against the backdrop of warfares in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), eulogizes the patriotism demonstrated in Yang Family's battle against the invading Liao Kingdom and Western Xia Kingdom.The CNPOC created and rehearsed the opera in 1959, which was later widely believed to have marked a milestone for the development of Peking Opera with a history of nearly 200 years.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Li Changchun on Thursday called on teachers to be "role models" for students and lead by example in matters of discipline and integrity.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when watching a performance dedicated to Teachers' Day, which falls on Friday.More than 700 teachers and students, and a dozen "model teachers" selected by Chinese netizens, joined Li to watch the performance.The Ministry of Education organized an election of "model teachers" online beginning August 8. BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature Sunday initiated a nationwide inspection over Agricultural Techniques Promotion Law in an effort to boost the development of the country's vast rural area while ensuring the nation's food security.Three inspection teams from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) will travel to six provinces and municipalities for supervision of the inspection in late August and September. Another eight teams from provincial level legislatures will be authorized to supervise the enforcement of the Agricultural Techniques Promotion Law and the Seed Law.Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said the inspection teams should push local governments forward to pay more attention to popularizing agricultural techniques, transform techniques into increased agricultural output and raise the incomes of farmers.Promoting agricultural techniques and increasing technology's contribution to agricultural development is the fundamental method to resolve the agricultural difficulties caused by limited resources and markets in China, said Uyunqimg, Vice Chairwoman of the NPC Standing Committee.The Agricultural Techniques Promotion Law was passed by the top legislature and began to be put into use in 1993, which aims at promoting more adoption of scientific and technological achievements in agricultural production to assure the modernization of the nation's agriculture.Statistics show the ratio of scientific and technological contributions to agricultural growth in China has increased from 26 percent in 1993 to 51 percent in 2009.

TOKYO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Officials from the Chinese Embassy in Japan have visited the Chinese fishermen illegally detained by the Japanese authorities last week in the East China Sea.The Chinese government and people care very much about their living and security conditions in captivity, officials from the embassy in Tokyo and the consulate general in Fukuoka told the crew members.Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and other senior diplomats have for several times lodged solemn representations with the Japanese side and protested the detention of the Chinese fishermen, they said.Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo summoned Japanese ambassador Uichiro Niwa early Sunday morning and demanded the immediate release of the Chinese fishermen and their boat. Dai urged Japan to avoid any misjudgment of the situation and to make a "wise political resolution."Dai was the highest-ranking Chinese official to make a public response after the fishing boat and its crew were seized.The Chinese embassy officials learned in detail the crew members' physical and mental conditions, bought food, fresh water and medicines for them, and contacted their families.The officials told the crew members that the Chinese government was sparing no effort in urging the Japanese side to release them, and asked them to keep good health and calmness, support the Chinese government's work and have confidence that the government can properly handle the issue as quickly as possible.The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo is continuing to make representations with the Japanese authorities, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the crew members and their boat.
