While we're all focused on COVID-19 as we head back to school this fall, Patti Wukovits is focusing on Meningitis B.“She loved to entertain and make people laugh. She enjoyed life. When I think of Kim the one word that comes to mind is joy,” said Wukovits. It's still painful for Wukovits to talk about her only daughter. Kimberly Coffey was a high school senior who was in her last two weeks of school. She'd been accepted to nursing school and was ready to launch her career. She wanted to follow in her mom's footsteps and be a nurse. One day she came home from school with a fever.“By the next morning she wasn’t fine at all. She said 'mommy everything hurts from my eyelashes to my toes.' This is really, really bad. She couldn’t pull her head off the pillow and was completely lethargic,” Wukovits recounted. Kimberly told her mom that it felt like her ankles were bleeding. Patti saw purple dots and rushed her daughter to the emergency room. “One of the doctors pulled me aside and said 'we believe your daughter had bacterial meningitis.' I said 'That’s not possible. I made sure Kim was vaccinated with the meningitis vaccine.'”She learned that Kim wasn't fully protected. "At the time, in 2012, when she got sick we didn’t have a Meningitis B vaccine in the United States so I couldn’t protect her with that. She didn’t have the privilege of having a Meningitis B vaccine."Doctor Paul Offit, Professor of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia says it's a vaccine that's necessary and reduces your chances of the type of pain, loss and suffering that Patti lives with everyday.“There’s five different strains that causes these, one vaccine prevents 4 of them: a, c, w, y and then there’s a b category, so 5- A, c, y,w and b. A few of the vaccines just do a c w and y and couple just do b, so 2 vaccines to prevent all 5 strains,” said Dr. Offit. Wukovits says, "her organs were failing and she was in septic shock and she went into cardiac arrest this is a child who was just in her classroom the day before talking with her friends about prom and how her beautiful dress was on her closet door and excited about graduation and starting nursing school.”Out of Kimberly's tragedy - came the Kimberly Coffey Foundation and the Meningitis B Action Project. “I am promoting awareness of her story so that this does not happen to anyone else. It does not have to happen any longer, we have a vaccine and it should not be happening. We shouldn’t lose one more child. But again, if parents don’t know about it we might not know to ask about it,” Wukovits said.Even in the COVID-19 era, Wukovits is doing webinars, educating everyone about the two separate vaccines, and empowering parents and families to have the conversation before they head back to school this fall. “I know we’re making a difference I know that. Kimberly’s dream was to be a pediatric nurse and save children’s lives and this is not how she or I planned she would save children’s lives but she still is and through me. With just eight days until election day and despite attempts at parliamentary roadblocks by Democrats, Senate Republicans easily confirmed Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court on Monday.On Sunday afternoon, the Senate voted 51-48 to advance Barrett's confirmation, which opened a final 30 hours of Senate debate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell directed the Senate to work overnight to complete the process by Monday evening. According to CNN, President Donald Trump is expected to swear-in Barrett at a ceremony at the White House at 9 p.m.Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, was the only Republican Senator set to vote against Barrett's confirmation. The final tally was 52-48.Meanwhile, Democrats' repeated attempts to delay the process have proven futile. On Thursday, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee chose to boycott a vote that sent the vote to the Senate floor. And since Senate Republicans changed parliamentary rules to prevent the filibuster of Supreme Court nominees in 2017, Democrats have little recourse to further block Barrett's confirmation.The push to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg stands in stark contrast to 2016, when Republicans chose not to hold confirmation hearings for President Barack Obama's nominee to replace Justice Antonin Scalia for more than six months prior to a presidential election, saying that the American people should decide who fills the vacancy.Barrett's confirmation would give conservative judges a 6-3 voting edge on the court, which could significantly shape policies and precedents for a generation. 1626

When Dr. Harold Bornstein described in hyperbolic prose then-candidate Donald Trump's health in 2015, the language he used was eerily similar to the style preferred by his patient.It turns out the patient himself wrote it, according to Bornstein."He dictated that whole letter. I didn't write that letter," Bornstein told CNN on Tuesday. "I just made it up as I went along."The admission is an about face from his answer more than two years when the letter was released and answers one of the lingering questions about the last presidential election. The letter thrust the eccentric Bornstein, with his shoulder-length hair and round eyeglasses, into public view."His physical strength and stamina are extraordinary," he crowed in the letter, which was released by Trump's campaign in December 2015. "If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency."The missive didn't offer much medical evidence for those claims beyond citing a blood pressure of 110/65, described by Bornstein as "astonishingly excellent." It claimed Trump had lost 15 pounds over the preceding year. And it described his cardiovascular health as "excellent."The White House didn't respond to a request for comment about Bornstein's claim.Later, as questions mounted over the health both of Trump and his rival Hillary Clinton, Bornstein offered a more businesslike assessment, listing things such as Trump's height, weight and prescription medications.He later told CNN's Drew Griffin he'd dashed off the first letter as he was seeing patients."I was just rushed for time," he said in September 2016. "I had people to see."He insisted then that the words were his own."Did I really write that letter? But with COVID-19 still a concern, families all over the United States are wondering if it's safe to go trick-or-treating this year.WFTS took those concerns to medical experts with Baycare Health, who say with some added safety precautions, your family can still take part in trick-or-treating, handing out candy and other Halloween festivities.If you plan to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home, instead of handing out candy at your door, consider arranging individual treat bags on a table in your driveway or near the front door for a contact-less hand-off."Instead of having it all in a bucket, where everyone is putting their hands in, lay out a row so that when they come up, they can just grab one and go," said Michelle Sterling, the children's wellness and safety specialist with St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. "Then, you can refill that row after the little trick-or-treaters leave your house."When it comes to going home-to-home for trick-or-treating, Sterling said be sure to wear a mask when around people who are not part of your household.Also, doctors say Halloween costume masks are not a substitute for a cloth mask unless it is made of two or more layers of fabric and fits snugly around your mouth and nose.Additionally, medical experts say wearing a costume mask over a protective cloth mask can make it difficult to breathe. Instead, they say to consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.Doctors also recommend keeping a physical distance of at least six feet from people who are not in your immediate household, using hand sanitizer often, and waiting to eat candy until you are at home and can wash your hands with soap and water.Keep in mind though, updated safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discourages families from taking part in traditional trick-or-treating.Sterling is also offering the following tricks for keeping Halloween a treat for your family during the pandemic:Go all out with the Halloween decorations. Keep it budget-friendly by having your kids help create decorations to hang from windows, trees, mailbox, etc. You could even turn one of your bedrooms into a kid-friendly haunted house.Decorate doors inside your house and let your little ones go trick-or-treating indoors. Get the whole family involved with mom or dad behind one door, an older sibling behind another and grandparents behind yet another door.Set up a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt in and around your house. Provide clues and leave treats along the route.Turn up your spooky Halloween music and have a dance party with your children. WILMINGTON, Del. — President-elect Joe Biden fractured his foot while playing with one of his dogs, according to the former vice president's doctor.Biden's office says he suffered the injury on Saturday and visited an orthopedist in Newark, Delaware, for an examination Sunday afternoon.A subsequent CT scan “confirmed hairline (small) fractures of President-elect Biden’s lateral and intermediate cuneiform bones, which are in the mid-foot,” according to a statement from his doctor, Kevin O’Connor.O’Connor says Biden will likely be wearing a walking boot for several weeks as his foot heals.The Associated Press reports that Biden was injured while playing with Major, one of his two dogs.
