Despite a prenatal condition that left him without a hand, Shaquem Griffin has always dreamed of playing in the NFL. On Saturday the Seattle Seahawks made that dream a reality — and gave Griffin the unique opportunity to play alongside his twin brother.Griffin was born a few minutes after his brother in 1995 with amniotic band syndrome. The condition left him with an underdeveloped hand that caused him severe pain, and Griffin later had his entire left hand amputated.Despite the setback, Griffin took up football and still routinely dominated opponents at Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg. When he signed to play collegiately at Central Florida in 2013, recruiting service Rivals listed him as a 3-star prospect.Griffin and his brother, Shaquill Griffin, continued stellar play together in college. Shaquill left UCF a year early and was drafted by the Seahawks in 2017. While Shaquill played in the NFL, Shaquem stayed behind and lead the Knights to an undefeated season at linebacker, recording 74 tackles, an interception and a fumble return for a touchdown.At the NFL Combine earlier this year, Shaquem stunned scouts by bench pressing 225 pounds 20 times while wearing a prosthetic hand. Shaquem only wore the hand to steady the weight bar, and does not wear the prosthetic on the field.On Saturday, the Shaquill was there with the rest of his family to congratulate his brother and new teammate when the Seahawks selected Shaquem with the 141st pick in the Draft. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden discussed coronavirus vaccines during an event Wednesday after being briefed by public health experts on the issue.During his speech, Biden said that while he trusts what scientists say about a potential vaccine, he doesn’t trust President Donald Trump.He mentioned what he called Trump’s “incompetence and dishonesty” surrounding the distribution of personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing. “We can’t afford to repeat those fiascos when it comes to a vaccine,” said the former vice president. “I trust vaccines, I trust scientists, but I don’t trust Donald Trump, and at this moment, the American people can’t, either.”The Trump campaign has accused Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, of sowing doubt about a potential vaccine by expressing concerns that politics count taint the approval process.Asked whether his comments could undermine public trust in scientists, Biden said the vaccine approval process should be “totally transparent” and it should be evaluated by a “board of scientists” that could give the public an unbiased opinion.Watch his remarks below:Biden's speech took place the same day that the federal government unveiled initial plans to distribute COVID-19 vaccines when they become available.According to a plan put forth by the Department of Defense and other federal agencies, the first round of vaccines would be reserved for medical professionals and essential workers. Eventually, vaccines would be distributed to whoever would like one.Vaccines would be provided to the public without cost thanks to Congress's legislation and signed into law by President Donald Trump.However, The Associated Press reports that officials face an uphill battle in getting the country vaccinated. DENVER, Colo. -- Sam’s No. 3 has been serving customers since 1927.“My grandfather was Sam,” said Sam's No. 3 restaurant owner Alex Armatas.Armatas says the business has made it through historic upheavals like the Great Depression and uprisings after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, but never has the restaurant had to close for 10 weeks straight.“The impact has been brutal. You go from 100% of business to zero,” Armatas said.Employees like Jason Salazar were temporarily furloughed.“I’ve never not worked since I was 17. So, to just be unemployed was like… what do I do,” Salazar said.When it was time to come back, Salazar says they had to adjust to a new lengthy process.“Just walking in, somebody takes my temperature right away, I wash my hands right away, I put on gloves right away. We don’t even enter the building without a mask.”Masks, social distancing, sanitation -- so much had to be considered when thinking of ways to prevent the potential spread of the virus.“We would normally have a [ketchup] bottle at the table or whatever, but now they’re just individual little containers for them,” Salazar said.The less people touch, the better. Armatas says they’ve fully transitioned to a contactless ordering system. The menu is now on an app.“We got a new app so we can track how many people are in the restaurant so we’re not allowing more than 50 people in the restaurant,” Armatas said.Normally, they can seat more than 200 people. So they’re operating at 25% capacity. However, customers say they’re happy to be back. Anne Wesley says Sam’s No. 3 has been one of her favorite spots more than the past 15 years.“We love it because neither of us are great cooks so it’s wonderful to have somebody prepare a meal for us that we would never prepare for ourselves,” Wesley said.She says she feels completely safe.“I mean you walk in there’s hand sanitizer right away. There’s plenty of social distancing. Our server had a mask and gloves on and so I didn’t feel in any way that our health was being compromised.”The servers say they’ve been grateful for generous tips from customers like Wesley, especially considering they’re operating under thin margins.“The bottom line has been crushed. The restaurant industry has been hurt quite a bit,” Armatas said.According to the National Restaurant Association, the restaurant industry has suffered more job and sale losses than all other U.S. industries since the pandemic began. Some restaurants have permanently closed their doors. Senior Vice President Larry Lynch says those that have stayed afloat are eager to open up dining rooms again, but it will actually cost restaurant owners more.“If you’re takeout and delivery, your cost structure has gone down some so you can at least maintain at that point. But once turn on the lights and open the doors and turn on the air conditioning and bring back the staff, your costs go up,” Lynch said.“How much food should I bring in? How much labor can I afford?” Armatas said.Lynch says it’s more important than ever for restaurant owners to be smart with their finances.“The one thing they could do is manage those menus carefully. Reduce the number of offerings, make it the ones that are most popular. Limit the risk of food waste, and you’ve done a lot to bring yourself closer to profit,” Lynch said.He wants restaurants to feel encouraged and know that they can open again it just takes a lot of work.“It usually takes a week or two to get in and make sure everything’s operating: the refrigerators are clean, the walk-ins are clean, everything’s working properly, you get the staff back in,” Lynch said.Once the logistics are sorted out, Armatas says owners need to remind themselves of why they opened in the first place.“If people know that you really truly care about them and want to make their experience great, that has to be your focus. Because if your focus is money, it won’t work,” Armatas.Whether a business stays open or not, is ultimately up to the customers.“As a community, if we want to thrive, we have to help each other out. And by supporting local businesses, it’s a very easy way, and it’s an enjoyable way,” Wesley said. 4171
DENVER, Colo. - Air traffic in and out of Denver International Airport was impacted Tuesday afternoon following COVID-19-related cleaning procedures at an FAA facility on airport grounds, a DIA spokesperson confirmed to Denver7.DIA said they were in a ground stop for only a few minutes around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The airport was on a ground delay or traffic management up until 6 p.m., delaying inbound traffic.The stop happened due to COVID-19-related cleaning in an FAA facility on airport property after an FAA employee tested positive for the virus. Air controllers were moved into a backup room to clean the main room. Officials said the cleaning did not happen at the airport terminals or at the control tower.A DIA spokesperson estimated that nearly 200 planes were delayed and 45 were canceled during the transition.Denver7 spoke with a mother who says her son was pulled off his plane and told there would be a delay due to weather.“We all understand what happens with COVID and the shutdowns and everything, but it’s less scary knowing that’s what it was as opposed to trying to figure out, well why is the shutting down the airport and not telling us why?" said Kelly Suchey.She says DIA AND the FAA should have been more transparent about what was going on.So Far, four FAA employees have tested positive for COVID-19.This story was first reported by Robert Garrison KMGH in Denver, Colorado. 1412
Data scientist Youyang Gu, who is the creator of a website widely used to monitor the spread of the coronavirus, estimates that the spread of the virus is not quite as prevalent as it was in March and April, but added that the US is unquestionably in the midst of a second wave.Gu's model is among several the CDC uses to come up with official government projections on the spread of the virus.Based on a lack of testing early in the pandemic, Gu’s team estimates that there were around 250,000 new infections of the coronavirus each day in late March and early April. By July 1, that figure dropped in half.But in recent weeks, the spread of the virus has gained steam. Based on Gu’s projections, he estimates there are nearly 200,000 new infections of the virus each day. Based on Gu’s projections, he expects the virus to peak out with 265,000 new infections per day in early August.“We updated our infections estimate to closer match the observed data. We now estimate there to be around 180k new infections per day in the US, 4 to 5 times higher than the number of reported cases.
