SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A landmark Supreme Court ruling today extended workplace protections for LGBTQ workers nationwide.Years ago, and a few months into a new job in San Diego, Lina Craychee says she came out as transgender and was promptly transferred from a store location to a corporate job."My boss told me I had to. They wouldn't let me present as female in the store level, because it would hurt business," said Craychee.Craychee says she kept silent and accepted the transfer because she needed the job. It's the type of silence she hopes will fade away after an historic Supreme Court ruling. By a 6-3 majority, the court extended 1964 Civil Rights Act protections to LGBTQ employees, who now can't be fired or discriminated against in the workplace because of their sexual orientation. While California protects LGBTQ workers against discrimination, nearly 30 states do not."Huge feeling of relief and victory," said Eddie Reynoso, executive director of the Equality Business Alliance in San Diego.Last fall, Reynoso camped for 72 hours on the Supreme Court steps for the opportunity to witness the arguments."In terms of impact, this will be bigger than the marriage equality ruling," said Reynoso.Reynoso says the ruling sends a powerful message across the country."Ultimately it means the workplace is going to be a safer place. LGBT workers will have an affirming work environment," said Reynoso. While this ruling is directed at the workplace, experts say this could open to door for other challenges involving LGBTQ discrimination. Meanwhile, advocates say more job security will mean more access to tings like health care."It means trans people like myself can have peaceful workplace," said Craychee. 1719

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A possible theft ring may be 'fishing' for checks at local post offices.Kevin, who owns a small business, mailed out several checks to vendors at the post office in Poway on a Friday night. On the next Tuesday morning last month, he got a call from his bank, Wells Fargo. A woman had tried to cash a fake check at a bank in Los Angeles, a typed check for nearly ,500 written out to a woman's name from Kevin's business. The bank rejected it. The bank representative then asked him about two other checks that had just been deposited at other branches. The two fake checks - written out to a different woman for some 0 each - had been deposited for cash in the Los Angeles area."There's definitely anxiety. You don't know how much money has been compromised," said Kevin.Kevin is not alone. In April, 10news featured the story of Barbara Reynolds and her state tax check, stolen and altered after she dropped it off at post office in Mira Mesa. Her check was likely 'fished' out by thieves using a rodent glue trap, before being washed. A chemical solution dissolves away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Another theft victim told 10news the Postal Inspection Service supervisor described to him a possible theft ring that has hit post offices in Encinitas, Poway and Mira Mesa in recent months. 10news has also tracked down reports of similar thefts in Sorrento Valley and Rancho Bernardo."It's frustrating. Never crossed my mind that something dropped off at post office could be compromised," said Kevin. Kevin's bank did cover the loss of the fake checks. 10news reached to the Postal Inspection Service but haven't heard back.Experts say use the slots inside the post office and if you do use an outside collection box, drop off your mail before the final collection time. 1823

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local father is just a few days away from reuniting with his family who is in federal quarantine in Northern California at Travis Air Force Base. Ken Burnett's wife and two young children were visiting Wuhan, China when the coronavirous broke out. The city shut down and the three were stranded, unable to fly home. For Valentine's day, he was able to surprise his wife with flowers and send some toys for the kids. Two quarantine flights did arrive at MCAS Miramar, but despite living in San Diego, the family had no choice where they'd go for their 14-day stay. Burnett says his family has remained healthy the entire time and are ready to come home. 1147

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local marketing firm is moving from the East Village to Sherman Heights, and hoping the move can bring the same kind of renewal they saw in their old home to that neighborhood."I think it has a lot of potential," says Reid Carr, the CEO ofRed Door Interactive.Carr started his company in the East Village in 2002, as Petco Park was being built. He's seen the neighborhood grow up over the past two decades, spurred by business investment."To people who come down here, it feels like it changed overnight," he says. "But to be in it, it ebbs and flows with people coming and going and really figuring itself out. It's pretty spectacular."He thinks the same thing can happen in Sherman Heights, one of 35 "Opportunity Zones" in San Diego County."I think it needs this kind of commercial and business corridor to build it up," says Carr. "We're trying to be the first footprint there to do it."Opportunity Zones are federally designated areas that give companies tax breaks on capital investment. The goal is to spread businesses across communities."It signals the areas in our county that are really ripe for investment," says Nikia Clarke, the Vice President of Economic Development for the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation."Companies are looking at places like Sherman Heights as the next high growth parts of our region," she adds. But Sherman Heights comes with a unique set of challenges. The neighborhood was founded in 1868 and is a historic district. That means companies need to comply with design and architecture rules, so they fit into the community.Companies like Jack in the Box and Walmart opened locations in the neighborhood in the past few years, and found success within the restrictions."As a small neighborhood, it's important to us that businesses want to understand where they're coming into and want to work with the fabric of the neighborhood," says Sherman Heights Historian Louise Torio. "We want something designed today that fits into the rhythm of the streetscape."Carr says his business is excited to become a part of the neighborhood and plans to honor the historic feel.He bought the lot near 25th and Market for .2 million and plans another million to renovate the existing buildings."We're going to embrace what's there, revitalize it in some ways and respect it in a lot of other ways," he says. The company hopes to start construction this July and move in by April of 2021. 2460
