"We like a mixture of old pinball machines with the new ones, too,” he says. “So, if you look around, there are machines all the way back to the 60s." The newest game added to his collection is The Munsters. The games also bring the family together. Zilch’s wife and children are also on his league. "We come down here probably four or five times a week," he said. When it's pinball season, they all practice together. Zilch says they usually begin in January and go through August. "We have two divisions; we have an A division and a B division,” he said. “And whoever wins a division, wins a really cool trophy." Each game has its own set of rules. But with four people to a machine, there is one goal: rack up the most points. “You go to each game and then you get points based on what place you come in," Zilch said.The competition keeps him and his family and his team coming back to the flippers, but so does the fun. 1791

There are more than 60 collectibles that make up Lawyer Garage’s unbelievable display."Cars are a language for everyone everyone can relate to a certain type of car, whether it be from childhood or a TV car you grew up watching. New transportation options are showing up in cities across the country, including shareable bikes, electric scooters, and now mopeds are even starting to compete for street space.However, with all these new electronic transportation options there are safety concerns. Starting this weekend, 400 electric mopeds will be hitting the streets of Washington, D.C. One thousand of the mopeds are already available for rent in New York City. The company behind these electric mopeds, Revel, plans to expand to other cities. “The benefit is really simple. The way you have to think about it: this is almost always at least half the cost of Uber and Lyft and twice as much fun,” says Paul Suhey with Revel. They're part of a growing number of transportation options people can rent by using their cell phone app. Most major cities already have electric scooters and bicycles. Last year in the U.S., people took 84 million trips on bikes and scooters, according to National Association of City Transportation officials. However, the influx of rides is causing safety concerns, with some concerned the vehicles will add to the congestion on the road. “If you're having to be aware of either a cyclist, a scooter rider, now a moped rider, who may go in between cars, you have to be careful and watch out for each other as you're using these different modes of operations,” says Jeanette Tejeda de Gomez with AAA. She says research shows moped riders are more likely to be injured or die than those walking, biking or driving a car. However, Revel says helmets are included with each rental, riders have to be at least 21, have a driver's license and they screen the rider's driving record. “From our first couple months operating in New York, in over 300,000 rides, 99.99 percent have happened without incident, and we understand that safety record doesn't happen by accident,” Suhey says. MONTPELIER, Vt. – Among the maple trees in west Vermont, on the outskirts of Montpelier, sits Morse Farm and Sugar Works. Elliott Morse and his brother Burr Morse run the farm. Their families have been farmers in the region for seven generations. “We were dairy farmers for most of those generations,” said Burr. “My father didn’t like dairy farming, that just wasn’t what you wanted to do.” Under Harry Morse senior, Burr’s father, the farm focused on tapping maple. When it was Burr’s turn to run things, he thought the land was suited to do something else too. The farm had enough land and the right topography for cross country skiing. “This was a junction here and really the main entrance to the ski system,” Burr explained as he walked the farm’s ski trails. “Skiing livened the place up in the winter.” Cross-country skiing on Morse Farm became a popular local attraction in Montpelier for more than two decades. “Families had fun and year after year they’d come up to ski,” Burr added. However, Morse Farm had to close its ski trails last year as the weather has become more unpredictable, and the snowfall amounts have been inconsistent. Over the past decade, Vermont has had almost 200 inches of snow one year, and barely 50 inches the next. “It’s not easy, it’s not easy at all. Skiing was with us for 20 years and now it’s like it died,” said Burr. The change has been tough for Burr Morse to accept, but necessary. Now he can focus all his attention to maple sugaring in hopes of minimizing the unpredictable weather’s effect on that business. “There are a lot of sugar maker walking around like, there’s not a problem. Nothing’s wrong, nothing’s wrong. I don’t have the patience for that,” he said. “I am a realist. I have my eyes open on the farm and darn it all I am concerned.” He’s concerned over how long technology, like vacuum pumps hooked onto maple trees, will work to draw sap from the trees when the weather is unseasonable. But he’s also concerned over how many more generations of the Morse family will be able to enjoy running the family farm. “I have just one grandchild 6-year-old girl and we love her to pieces and if she wants to carry on this place someday that would be great,” Burr said. “But will the place be here for her if she makes that choice I don't know and that's what I worry about.” 2347

  

CANARY ISLANDS -- Imagine rowing almost non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean with a group of four people. No bathroom, no shade and a limited supply of food. “You’re totally exposed to the elements,” said Evan Stratton, a U.S. veteran. Evan and three others rowed across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands off of Spain to Antigua, near Puerto Rico, as part of the Talker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge — a yearly ocean rowing race. The path is 3,000 nautical miles. “Our row took 50 days, 11 hours, and 35 minutes,” he said. “Which seems like a really long time, but we actually set a world record for our boat class.” The team, titled Fight Oar Die, was the only American team to compete this year. More than just a physical challenge, the race is a test of the mind as well. We sat down with Evan, who walked us through it. “It’s really a challenge in mental strength,” he said. “It’s an introspective look at yourself whether you want one or not because you remove all inputs,” he explained. “There’s no work phone calls, no e-mails, no TV, no radio.” Through their journey, psychologists are hoping to learn something. “We got involved as part of that research component,” said Dr. Trey Cole, a clinical psychologist and former veteran himself. Dr. Cole oversees the researchers from the University of Denver that have been working with the Fight Oar Die rowing team throughout their experience. “There’s a lot to do with motivation and sleep and purpose and those type of factors we’re trying to take a closer look at,” Dr. Cole said. He helped the men prepare beforehand too — with conflict resolution, stress management, and other skills. “It’s hilarious to be sitting in your off shift in the cabin hearing two guys on the boat yell at each other but they’re still just rowing,” Evan said. “The end goal is you gotta get there.” It was a team effort with personal mental challenges each rower dealt with individually. Part of Evan’s way of getting through was the photos and cards his wife packed for him, cards he could open when he hit “the wall,” when he was “almost home,” and on his son’s first birthday that he missed while rowing. Evan said a challenge like this took the support of his family, but it all starts with motivation. “It just takes getting out and doing it,” he said.Evan spent four years of his life as a Marine earlier on in his life. “I went through my own battles with PTSD and mental health,” he said. Bringing awareness to mental health was part of his motivation for joining the rowing team this year. “We really wanted to show veterans that life doesn’t end after the military, that you can still go out and do really big things and really hard things and really incredible things,” Evan said. This awareness is at the forefront of Fight Oar Die’s mission — to provide a platform for veterans' mental health issues.“The hope is that we can generate some conclusions from that that could be helpful in informing the future of veteran and service member care,” Dr. Cole said. Cole and other researchers will continue to look into the data from the rowing teams each year. 3122
