BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday confirmed it had started preparations for President Hu Jintao's visit to the United States early next year, which the ministry said would be profound and far-reaching for bilateral ties."China and the United States have maintained close communications about the visit, which will be very important and will bring far-reaching influence for bilateral relations in new era," spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told a regular press briefing.Although Hu's U.S. visit had long been under discussion, it was the first time that China's foreign ministry confirmed the visit and elaborated on its significance.Ma said both China and the United States would like to see a successful visit that will boost the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship in the 21st century. At their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Toronto in June, U.S. President Barack Obama formally invited Hu to pay a state visit to the United States early next year. Hu accepted the invitation, Ma said. The visit will be Hu's first state visit to the United States since the Obama administration took office. His last state visit to the United States took place in April 2006."We agreed that we will work together to achieve tangible results in anticipation of the visit of President Hu to Washington in January 2011," U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in Beijing Thursday.Chinese analysts said the visit would be significant because it is expected to help address current issues and chart a path for the long-term bilateral ties."At such a crucial moment, Hu's visit will help reshape the China-U.S. ties in future," said Yuan Peng, a scholar of the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations.Relations between the two countries had stumbled earlier this year over issues ranging from U.S. arms sales to Taiwan to China's currency exchange rate, said Qin Yaqing, deputy director of Chinese Foreign Affairs University."It is impossible for two presidents' meeting to iron out all the differences, but the meeting will enable presidents to elaborate on their stances for better mutual understanding," Qin said. The past has proved that high-level visits could play a unique role in boosting China-U.S. relations, Yuan said. "It always worked the things out at the critical time."Yuan said Hu's visit was aimed at bringing the damaged China-U.S. relations back on "healthy and stable" track."In months ahead of Hu's visit, the United States should be reasonable in dealing with issues like trade and economy and refrain from measures undermining bilateral ties," said Shi Yinhong, a professor of China's Renmin University. Before their meeting in Washington next year, Hu and Obama are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the G20 summit and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) leaders' gathering in November.

GUANGZHOU, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao lit the Asian Games torch from a specially designed cauldron in Beijing's Temple of Heaven Tuesday morning, marking the official start of the month-long relay for the 16th Asian Games. The torch relay will cover Beijing, Harbin, Changchun, Shandong's Haiyang, and 21 cities in southern Guangdong Province before arriving at the Asian Games opening ceremony in Guangzhou on November 12.Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, has been preparing itself for the games for the past six years, after it won the bid to host the Games in July 2004.The construction of the venues and the Asian Games Village has been completed. The Asian Games Village, covering 622,000 square meters, will house more than 40,000 athletes, officials, media personnel and volunteers. The garden-style village boasts a treasure trove of ancient Chinese architecture and tranquil natural sceneries, which are meant to provide the athletes with a serene getaway from the hustle and bustle of the competitions."The rooms for the athletes are not equipped with telephones, TV sets or cooking facilities, so the athletes can enjoy a quieter and safer environment," said Fan Haoran, a staff member in charge of housing services in the Village. To ensure the safety of the Games, more than 100 security checkpoints have been set up at highway toll stations and ferry terminals in the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hainan and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The public security divisions at all levels nationwide will be involved in a series of safety measures, such as increasing efforts to investigate and handle legal disputes, cracking down on violent crimes, and monitoring public security, according to the public security bureau of Guangzhou Municipality.Guangzhou Public Security Bureau has distributed security awareness pamphlets to bus and car drivers, introducing them to measures designed to prevent and cope with crimes and terrorist attacks, said Zhu Xuqin, an official at the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau. The Special Force of Chinese People's Armed Police Forces of Guangdong Province has already undergone a strict 100-day counter-terrorism attack training program."We have been studying the security incidents that took place in the Munich Olympics and the Atlanta Olympics, and have discussed ways to cope with emergencies as well as acquainted ourselves with the sports venues," said Li Hejun, a general of the special force. As for the accusations about the safety hazards of Guangzhou's subway Line Three which were posted online by a local engineer, Guangzhou Metro Corporation announced Tuesday that Line Three was safe enough, despite the fact that the compressed strength of the concrete in some parts of the line was below the planned standards. As an integral part of the preparation for the Asian Games, the local government of Guangzhou has been building additional sports infrastructure for the public.Currently, Guangzhou has more than 20,000 sports venues and facilities and 9,000 green spaces for morning and evening exercises."We want to make the Asian Games a holiday for all. The best way to approach sports is to make it a way of life," Zeng Weiyu, vice president of the department of publicity of the Guangzhou Asian Games Committee, said.

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo told Japan early Sunday morning to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the Chinese fishermen and fishing boat its coast guard seized earlier this week.Dai made the remarks when he summoned the Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa in the wee hours. He was the highest-ranking Chinese official to make a response after the fishing boat and its crew were seized Tuesday in waters off the Diaoyu Islands and its captain was detained on Friday."Dai expressed solemnly (to the Japanese ambassador) the Chinese government's grave concerns and its serious and just position," said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.Dai warned Japan not to make a wrong judgement on the situation and urged it to make a "wise political resolution" and immediately release the fishermen and return the boat. The Japanese ambassador expressed that he would promptly report the Chinese position to his government, according to the statement.China decided Friday night to postpone a negotiation with Japan on the East China Sea issue, which had been scheduled for mid September, after a Japanese court ruled a 10-day detention through Sept.19 against the captain despite protests from China.Previously, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday summoned the Japanese ambassador and demanded Japan immediately and unconditionally release the boat and all the crew, saying China's determination to defend its sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and the interests of the Chinese people was unswerving.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Friday night when announcing the postponement of the talks that the Japanese side has "ignored China's repeated solemn representations and firm opposition, and obstinately decided to put the Chinese captain under the so-called judiciary procedures."She said Japan's acts have violated the law of nations and basic international common sense, and are "ridiculous, illegal and invalid.""Japan will reap as it has sown, if it continues to act recklessly," Jiang warned. On Tuesday, two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. No injuries were reported, but the fishing boat was then intercepted by the Japanese patrol.
