The South Georgia Islands might not be permanently populated by humans, but it is an important sanctuary for penguins, seals and other various creatures in the South Atlantic.But a giant iceberg, A68a, could threaten the wildlife on the islands, according to the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands.With the assistance of the Royal Air Force, the government has been tracking the iceberg’s movement toward the islands. While the islands do not have a permanent population, they are visited by tourists and others.According to the BBC, A68a was 150 kilometers from South Georgia. The concern is the iceberg could disrupt breeding for penguins on the island.“We are now entering the key part of the year for breeding," Mark Belchier, director of fisheries and environment for the government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, told BBC News."The nests have been built for gentoo penguins, and eggs will be laid soon. And the first seal pups have been born in the last fortnight," he added.The islands used to be populated on a more permanent basis as a small settlement ran a whaling station.Before air travel, the islands were used by explorers to prepare for treks to Antarctica. The stockpiling frenzy that occurred in the spring during the first wave of COVID-19 may rear its ugly head again.Research from Inmar Intelligence shows that 57% of shoppers are planning to rebuild their stockpile as worldwide coronavirus cases surge in what experts call a second wave.In the months following the pandemic's beginning, cleaning supplies and toilet paper disappeared from store shelves as quickly as they were stocked.According to Inmar, 64% of shoppers said they took part in the spring stockpiling.By far, toilet paper (67%) and hand sanitizer (57%) are on top of the list when it comes to products that shoppers plan to hoard should they find it necessary to create another stockpile.Inmar Intelligence says it is now the responsibility of retailers to make sure supply meets demand as communities once again face possible shutdowns in the face of rising COVID-19 cases."Today's shoppers still have concerns around safety, availability, and convenience, and will continue to look to their local retailers to deliver consistency and seamless customer service across all touchpoints," said Inmar Chairman and CEO David Mounts in a press release. The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) identified Rusten Sheskey as the officer who shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday.The DCI, which provided its first update on the case late Wednesday, nearly 72 hours after the shooting, said its continuing its investigation, but is not pressing charges as of now.The shooting has prompted massive unrest in Kenosha since. The unrest culminated in a shooting incident that killed two people and injured one person on Tuesday amid the late-night demonstration. A 17-year-old was arrested in connection to Tuesday's shooting.In response to Sunday’s shooting, professional athletes in multiple sports boycotted scheduled games. All three NBA Playoff games on Wednesday were postponed, and a MLB game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds was also postponed.Investigators said that Sheskey, who was placed on administrative leave, has been with the police department for seven years.The DCI gave the following description of Sunday’s incident:“During the incident, officers attempted to arrest Jacob S. Blake, age 29. Law enforcement deployed a taser to attempt to stop Mr. Blake, however the taser was not successful in stopping Mr. Blake. Mr. Blake walked around his vehicle, opened the driver’s side door, and leaned forward. While holding onto Mr. Blake’s shirt, Officer Rusten Sheskey fired his service weapon seven times. Officer Sheskey fired the weapon into Mr. Blake’s back. No other officer fired their weapon. Kenosha Police Department does not have body cameras, therefore the officers were not wearing body cameras.”Officials also said that Blake told officers he had a knife. The DCI said that officials later found a knife on the driver's side floor of the car.The only videos of the incident were take bystanders that showed Blake opening his car door before he was shot at a close distance by Sheskey.Blake’s family said on Tuesday that the 29-year-old is partially paralyzed, but was fortunate to survive from his injuries. 2048
