DENVER – Colorado blazed trails when it legalized pot and now Denver could lead the way decriminalizing magic mushrooms.The group Denver for Psilocybin may soon have the all-clear to start gathering signatures so you can vote on it this fall.Gathering at the steps of the Denver City and County building on Wednesday, the group — chanting at times, "free the spores!" — met with city leaders about their push to decriminalize psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms.Tyler Williams, one of the leaders of Denver for Psilocybin, spoke to Scripps station KMGH in Denver about their reasoning behind the push."There's a lot of research for all sorts of mental health issues. Everything from anxiety to depression to cluster headaches, addiction," said Williams.But he said he doesn't need the research to prove his claims. He credits their use saved his life a few years ago. "I had a suicide attempt November 12th of 2015 and I think it helped me get out of my depression, and it's helped me with my PTSD," Williams said.He's not alone. There are a growing number of people turning to psilocybin.Licensed professional counselor Kathy Hawkins treats a few number of people, not during their use, but only before and after."So, I’m a place where they can come and talk about it. There was even research to study the effects of the psychedelic compound, but then the government labeled it a Schedule 1 drug; illegal because of its negative physical and psychological effects.However, many point to a study of cancer patients at Johns Hopkins, who experienced a year-long of positive effect from mushrooms."They’re so desperate for help, they’re willing to try. So they've had big breakthroughs, relief from trauma, from anxiety, from depression so anything that's going to help. I think is worth investigating," said Hawkins. 2031

DEL MAR (CNS) - Two horses had to be taken by van from the track at Del Mar Racetrack Friday but both are expected to recover.The 5-year-old mare Magnolia's Hope was vanned off after being eased in the stretch of the fourth race, a 6 1/2-furlong claiming race on the dirt track for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have never won two races."Though it is never good to be given a van ride, this does not appear to be a case of a life-threatening injury," Mac McBride, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's director of media, told City News Service. "We should know more about her condition tomorrow."Magnolia's Hope was fourth at the start of the race, took the lead a quarter-mile into the race and dropped to fourth in the field of seven through a half-mile.Magnolia's Hope has one victory in nine career starts, along with two second-place finishes and one third-place finish. She has earned ,260 in her career.The 4-year-old filly Velvet Queen also was vanned off after finishing third in the eighth race, a mile race on the dirt track for fillies and mares 3 years old and up which have never won ,000 once other than maiden. DENVER — A former teacher at East High School in Denver was arrested after accusations she smoked marijuana with her students during a party at her Denver home. Rachel Farley, 29, was taken into custody Monday on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class 4 felony. According to an arrest affidavit, Farley invited students from her class to her home on August 18, 2017, to decorate clothing for Freshman Day. At some point during the event, she brought out marijuana and began smoking it with her students, the document reads.In February of this year, police say they were dispatched to the school after a student reported that Farley had been providing and consuming marijuana with her students at her home.Police interviewed nine students as part of the investigation and “multiple students admitted to smoking with the suspect,” the document read. Farley resigned from East High School on August 31, 2017, according to a statement from Denver Public Schools. The statement stresses, “there was nothing notable about her resignation - she simply resigned.”After her resignation, DPS says she had been working as a volunteer in the music and drama department at the school. But after the allegations surfaced in February, she was “barred from volunteering for, contracting with or being employed by Denver Public Schools in the future.”Farley was listed as still being in custody at Denver City Jail as of Wednesday morning.  1502

(KGTV) — Part of a Del Mar cliff crumbled, just feet away from train tracks, following heavy rains that battered the county.Sky10 flew over the affected area Friday, capturing a portion of cliffside hollowed out near train tracks near 13th Street. Several crews were seen assessing the area. Later, construction machinery was observed in the area as well.RELATED: Plan to stabilize Del Mar bluffs underwayAn Amtrak spokesperson said the erosion is not affecting schedules. However, Amtrak later posted that all train travel between Oceanside and San Diego will be canceled and a bus bridge will be used from 6 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday due to "unscheduled track work."North County Transit District added that, "The heavy rainstorms over the last 48 hours have caused a washout adjacent to the coastal railroad tracks along the Del Mar Bluffs just south of Coast Boulevard which support COASTER, Amtrak, and BNSF operations. At this time, all trains can safely operate at restricted speeds through the area based on site reviews and inspections conducted by railroad engineers."NCTD also planned bus service starting 6 a.m. Saturday. COASTER passengers will run a regular service from Oceanside to the Solana Beach train station, with passengers taking a bus to Santa Fe Depot in San Diego. "Northbound COASTER passengers who board the COASTER south of Solana Beach station will be bused all the way to Oceanside Transit Center," NCTD said. Repairs will be conducted starting Saturday morning and include excavating, setting new steel plates in place, and backfilling with concrete slurry to shore the bluff material and ensure the safety of the bluffs, according to NCTD officials. In May, a section of Sunset Cliffs was taped off after a collapse.Then in August, worst fears were realized when a cliff collapsed in Encinitas on beachgoers, killing three people and injuring two others.Mother Nature's movements now leave beachgoers with more to watch out for and local leaders looking for a solution.SANDAG is already in the process of a plan to repair seawalls, storm drains, and drainage channels in order to protect the coastline and what's atop it.
