SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal officials in San Diego Wednesday announced the arrests of hundreds of suspects and the seizure of more than a ton and a half of narcotics as part of a crackdown on a Mexican criminal gang considered responsible for much of the flow of illicit drugs into the United States.During a late-morning briefing at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Kearny Mesa offices, DEA and Justice Department officials detailed the results of the multi-agency operation targeting the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion."Project Python is the single-largest strike by U.S. authorities against CJNG, and this is just the beginning," DEA Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon said.The six-month enforcement campaign has resulted in the capture of more than 600 gang associates and 350 indictments, including one against the alleged head of the criminal organization, fugitive Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho."The Department of State has issued one of the largest narcotics crimes- related rewards ever -- million -- for information leading to the arrest of Cervantes.In San Diego and Imperial counties, the operation has led to the arrests of about 130 CJNG associates and seizure of 3,282 pounds of methamphetamine, 198 kilograms of cocaine, 59 kilograms of heroin, 44 kilograms of fentanyl, two kilograms of opium, in excess of 27,000 fentanyl pills and 18 guns, according to the DEA.The Jalisco-based cartel is one of the fastest-growing transnational criminal organizations in Mexico and among the most prolific methamphetamine producers in the world, and is the source of a large amount of drugs entering the United States and elevated levels of violence in Mexico, according to federal officials.Last month, Cervantes' son and second-in-command, Ruben Oseguera "Menchito" Gonzalez, was extradited from Mexico to the United States on drug- trafficking charges. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Assisted by San Diego officers, Los Angeles police Friday morning arrested social media personality Raymundo Diaz on suspicion of sexual assault.Diaz, 33, who is known online as Ray Diaz, was arrested by detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division's Special Assault Section about 5 a.m. in San Diego, according to the LAPD."Proud of our elite RHD who pursued this relentlessly," Chief Michel Moore tweeted Friday evening. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who allegedly struck and gravely injured a bicyclist near Lindbergh Field last month, then fled San Diego and was arrested in Kern County, pleaded not guilty Monday to a felony hit and run charge.Mauricio Flores, 29, is accused in the Aug. 21 crash at India and West Washington streets that seriously injured a 66-year-old man.The victim was hospitalized with what police at the time said was a life-threatening head injury. His current condition is unknown.Police said Flores was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan that struck the victim.Video footage shot by a witness shows the driver of a van, which had Georgia license plates, pulling to a stop following the collision and getting out along with a female passenger, identified by police as 50-year-old Jessica Bailey.In the video, the pair walked over to the where the injured man was lying on the side of the road. After looking at him for few moments, the driver pulled the bent bicycle out from under the front of the van and set it aside, then got back into the vehicle along with his companion and drove off. A second, male passenger also was seen getting out of the van in the video, but he was not identified by police.About one week after the crash, San Diego police posted Flores and Bailey's names and pictures online and asked for the public's assistance in locating the suspects.According to the California Highway Patrol, an off-duty Kern County CHP officer who had seen a flyer about the hit-and-run case came across the Caravan while riding his motorcycle in Lake Isabella, an unincorporated community about 35 miles northeast of Bakersfield.The officer reported the van, which had California government-agency license plates.Three days later, another CHP officer spotted the van -- now bearing Vermont plates -- in a parking lot outside a Vons store in the area and called in sheriff's deputies, who found Flores and Bailey and arrested them, CHP spokesman Robert Rodriguez said.Flores was booked Sept. 3 into a San Diego County jail and remains held on 0,000 bail following his Monday morning arraignment. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Backers of an initiative that would have raised San Diego's hotel tax to fund a long-awaited expansion to the city's bayfront convention center failed to collect enough valid signatures to earn a spot on the November ballot, the city clerk's office announced Wednesday.A random sampling of the campaign's more than 114,000 signatures by the county Registrar of Voters fell short of the threshold of verified signatures needed to place an issue on the ballot. A signature-by-signature count will start immediately, but such a count typically takes 30 days to complete, and the deadline to place a measure on the ballot is Friday."Colossal failure," initiative opponent City Councilman David Alvarez wrote on his Twitter page.Overall, 71,646 valid signatures are needed to place an initiative on the ballot. The signature-by-signature count could qualify the hotel tax increase for a future election if it isn't completed in time for the November ballot.The City Council could also decide to place the measure on the ballot during a Thursday special meeting, but that would raise the initiative's required success threshold to two-thirds voter approval.The proposed initiative would raise the city's 12.5 percent hotel tax to 13.75 to 15.75 percent depending on the location of each hotel.The 42-year tax increase was expected to generate .4 billion, including nearly .8 billion for the convention center.An estimated 7 million would have gone to homelessness services and housing funding over the tax increase's first five years. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego judge's ruling today clears the way for the proposed Plaza de Panama project in Balboa Park to proceed.San Diego Superior Court Judge Gregory W. Pollack ruled both the project's proposed bond funding mechanism and an agreement of cooperation with the Plaza de Panama Committee to be legal, allowing the city to proceed with the plan to reduce traffic congestion in the park, according to the city attorney's office.San Diegans for Open Government argued that the city should have allowed voters to decide whether the city should rely on million in bonds to help fund the project.The City Council approved the project by a 7-1 vote in 2012, but six years of challenges and litigation stalled its implementation.The project will limit vehicle access and improve parking in order to restore the Plaza de California and Plaza de Panama as dedicated pedestrian areas."Balboa Park truly is the jewel of San Diego, and I am excited that the city can finally move forward with its plans to revitalize the Park for the enjoyment of San Diegans and tourists alike," City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said after the ruling.The Plaza de Panama project will also include improvements to more than six acres of park space and improved park access.
