BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) - Orthopaedic experts have warned that China should improve its prevention of orthopaedic illnesses as its population ages.Osteoporosis, bone fractures and joint diseases, to which elderly people are particularly susceptible, have surged as serious health concerns, said Feng Huicheng, surgeon-in-chief of a leading Chinese orthopaedics hospital, at the Sixth International Congress of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA) Sunday in Beijing.According to China's latest census in 2010, the number of people aged 60 and over stood at 177.65 million and accounted for more than 13 percent of the country's total 1.3 billion population."Orthopaedic diseases pose a great threat to the elderly, and they'll only grow more serious as we have a large population that is aging," said Dr. Feng from the No. 309 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army."The younger generation should start to be concerned with their health now, particularly calcium loss, to prevent osteoporosis when getting old.".A report issued by the International Osteoporosis Foundation this year shows that about 70 million people in China now suffer from the condition and that number may leap to 286 million by 2020.H.K.T.Raza, president of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association, said at the conference that the prevention of osteoporosis should begin when people are still young."Osteoporosis is best prevented by regular exercises and good dietary controls. All that has to be done early in life, maybe between 20 and 30, to prevent the disease," he said.According to the World Health Organization, osteoporosis remains one of the primary threats to the health of the middle-aged and elderly.Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. Parts of the bone grow weak and prone to fracture. Women are usually subject to greater risk of osteoporosis than men as they start with lower bone density and lose bone mass faster as they age. 

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Apple on Monday announced that it has sold more than four million of its new iPhone 4S, three days after the launch last Friday."IPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend--the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing.In addition, more than 25 million customers are already using iOS 5, the latest version of the mobile operating system powering Apple's mobile devices, since it was released last Wednesday; and more than 20 million customers have signed up for iCloud, the cloud service designed to store and sync data for download to multiple devices, said the company in the statement.The iPhone 4S, which looks the same as the iPhone 4, has major hardware upgrade inside, including a faster chip, a higher- resolution camera and Siri intelligent voice control.Last Friday, AT&T and Sprint, two iPhone wireless carriers in the United States, said they have seen record daily sales with the launch of the iPhone 4S.The lasted Apple smartphone is currently on sale in the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Britain, and will be available in 22 more countries on Oct. 28. BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or China's cabinet, has decided to create a food allowance for about 26 million needy students nationwide, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.Each student will receive an average of three yuan (47 cents) daily from the central budget, said a statement issued after a State Council meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.The policy will be implemented on a trial basis in 680 less-developed counties, the statement said.Authorities will have to allocate a total of 16 billion yuan annually from the central budget to meet the policy's requirements, it said.The money will be given to schools instead of directly to the students' families, allowing the schools to provide more and better food in their canteens, the statement said.Efforts will be made to build better canteens in rural primary and middle schools, the statement said.The statement added that daily allowances for needy students at primary boarding schools will also be increased from three to four yuan, while those for students at middle boarding schools will rise from four to five yuan.

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Jean Ping on Tuesday met and held talks with a high level Chinese delegation led by Jiang Yaoping, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce.The discussion between the two sides was mainly focused on the cooperation between China and Africa in different sectors.Ping said AU is ready to do all possible to further strengthen its ties with China.The Chairperson said China has been working in cooperation with AU member states on various areas, including trade, investment, and diplomatic exchanges."We are happy to meet the delegation; a delegation not only as an important partner but as a friend of Africa, a friend with which we are strengthening cooperation constantly," said the Chairperson.He also reiterated that Africa is benefited from the relations with China.He said Africa has established an important relations with China within the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC), and the two sides are now engaged in strategic dialogue on very crucial areas.Jiang said that AU has been committed to economic integration in Africa that enable member states improve the livelihoods of Africans.He also said that AU has played a constructive role in meeting global issues like the climate change.The Vice Minister stated that China has become one of the most trading partner of Africa, and the trade volume between China and Africa is increasing from time to time.Leading the delegation, Jiang has also visited the African Union Conference Center (AUCC) Project which is almost completed and is expected to be the avenue of the coming AU Summit for the first time at its own headquarter.
