SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego and Comic-Con go back far before Hollywood stars and blockbuster films took over headlines every July. The convention started in the Grant Hotel across from Horton Plaza Park as a simple gathering in the hotel's basement. Fifty years later, it has become a very different event, sprawled across downtown San Diego for everyone, ticket or not.But San Diego's roots to comics can be enjoyed throughout the year without the convention. Art galleries, comic shops, and famous landmarks all offer comic fans something to enjoy outside five days each summer.Comic art galleries in Liberty Station and the Gaslmap District: Check out tons of comic art exhibits and events at Liberty Station inside the San Diego Comic Art Gallery (2765 Truxtun Rd., San Diego) or visit the Chuck Jones Gallery (232 Fifth Ave., San Diego) and peruse artwork including Chuck Jones original sketches and special exhibits.Famous movie locations in San Diego: If you're a fan of the films at Comic-Con, explore the locations around San Diego where movies made their mark. The Hotel Del Coronado was featured in the 1959 classic "Some Like It Hot" and 1986's "Top Gun" filmed numerous scenes around town, the most famous being Kansas City Barbeque (600 Harbor Drive). More locations.Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park: The San Diego Hall of Champions will become the Comic-Con Museum in spring 2021, but you can check it out early at this year's Comic-Con with The Batman Experience. The museum will eventually feature comic artwork, exhibits, special programming, and events throughout the year in Balboa Park.San Diego Comic Fest: If you just can't shake the need for a comic convention, San Diego Comic Fest hits Mission Valley in the spring. The smaller, more intimate comic convention is put on by previous SDCC organizers. The convention still delivers on comic book and film interests, but on a less chaotic scale.San Diego Symphony performs popular hits: You can't help but appreciate an exciting soundtrack. The San Diego Symphony performs music from films during various shows throughout the year. Some performances even play films on a big screen as the orchestra provides the score live.Star Wars celebrations: Because of Comic-Con's success, San Diego knows how to throw a good Star Wars celebration. The San Diego Padres have started holding a special Star Wars themed game and local cosplay groups, like the Imperial Sand Garrison of the 501st Legion, can be seen at local events. Now Disneyland has "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge," giving locals another morsel of galactic fun to check out. Just wait for May the Fourth (May 4th.)Comic book shops across San Diego: Stores like Comics-N-Stuff, Yesteryear's Comics, and Comickaze provide endless adventures through comic books for all fans. Whether you're looking for a new read, funs merchandise, or just to banter with fellow comic book fans, you'll find it at a local comic shop. 2944

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Roughly 24 hours after stepping foot on Hawaiian soil, San Diego mother Christina Adele said that she and her family flew back home from vacation once Hawaiian state health officials had them quarantine after not accepting their negative test results.“I was in tears,” she told ABC10 News. She said that before the trip she checked Hawaii's entry checklist which requires a negative nucleic acid amplification test performed by a trusted partner, including CVS Pharmacy. She said that she and her family went to a CVS in Poway to get tested, which is where she said that she clarified with CVS staff that their testing would be adequate. “I said, ‘We're going to Hawaii. We need to make sure this is not an antigen or antibody test,’ and they assured me it wasn't,” she added. The family’s excitement quickly faded after their plane touched down in Hawaii. Adele said that Hawaiian health officials did not accept their tests and said that her family was instructed to quarantine for 14 days in their room at their resort.“[The resort staff said] if we see you out at all we're going to call the Hawaiian Police Department and you will go to jail,” she told ABC10 News. “I didn't pack much of anything for my son. I had some diapers and some things but I was thinking I was going to buy all that stuff in Hawaii.”She said her family couldn’t handle the quarantine so they flew back home the next day.“[I got] an email saying that [Hawaiian health officials] reread our COVID tests and they actually are valid and we could be immediately released from quarantine," she said a day after returning home.Part of the email reads: "Aloha, your COVID test has been read and you have been released from quarantine."“The whole ridiculous part is we had the negative COVID tests from the trusted partner,” she added.State health officials in Hawaii emailed the following to ABC10 News: 1901

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego gun owners could soon face more requirements when it comes to storing their firearms.City Attorney Mara Elliott announced the proposal Tuesday. It would require gun owners to store their guns in a Department of Justice approved lockbox or trigger lock, unless the owner or authorized user is carrying the firearm or it is in their immediate control. Elliott said state law requires locks to accompany guns sold in California but does not always require their use. "Safe storage laws work when it comes to protecting our kids," said Elliott, who made the announcement next to a playground at Mission Bay. Elliott pointed to the 2013 death of 10-year-old Eric Klyaz, who was fatally shot when playing with a gun in a friend's garage. "Two families were torn apart that day, but the impact of his death cut deeper than that," Elliott said. Violators would face up to six months in jail and a ,000 fine. Elliott said police wouldn't be doing door-to-door checks, but could cite someone when responding to a different call.Still, Michael Schwartz, who heads the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC, said law is duplicative and that education is the better approach. "This is something that invades someone's choice in their home," he said. "Whether or not you have a child, maybe you're a single woman who lives at home, and now she's taking away a number of choices that a single woman has to be able to defend herself in her own home."The proposed ordinance says it will not substantially burden a person's ability for self-defense at home. The city's public safety committee will consider the ordinance at its meeting Wednesday. 1662

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Harbor Police Tuesday arrested a man accused of attacking a teen Syrian refugee on board an MTS trolley, sparking a hate crime investigation. According to police, 26-year-old Adrian Vergara was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor narcotic charge. During his arrest, Vergara was recognized as being wanted in connection to an ongoing hate crime investigation, police said. The arrest stems from the beating of a 17-year-old Syrian refugee on a San Diego Trolley car Oct. 15. Representatives for the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), who spoke on the teen's behalf, told 10News the teen was speaking Arabic while on FaceTime with a friend when a man on the trolley asked him, "Where are you from? Are you Mexican?"RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeThe teen reportedly responded, "No, I am Arab."According to the teen, the man then started punching him and cursing while using racial slurs. The victim reportedly exited the trolley at the 62nd Street station in Encanto. He said the man also got off the trolley and left the scene.Numerous people reportedly watched as the victim was attacked, but no one stepped in to help him. Police have obtained video of the attack and said it confirms what the victim reported. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1387
