SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The cost of housing in California isn’t just affecting first-time home buyers, it’s also taking a toll on retirees, according to a report from Global Atlantic Financial Group. The research, based on data from more than 4,000 people nationwide, found that retirees in California spend nearly ,575 a month: 30 percent more than the average retiree in the U.S. at ,008.Housing costs that build up during working years also take a toll. Nearly half of California’s non-retired residents ages 40 and up owe an average of 4,876 on their mortgages, compared to the national average of 4,770. Global Atlantic claims that sky-high housing expenses force California residents to make sacrifices during retirement, including cutbacks on restaurants and entertainment, travel and vacations and charitable giving. Almost 40 percent of retirees nationwide are spending more than they expected."Many Americans adjust their lifestyles and cut spending once they see how quickly costs can add up in retirement," says Paula Nelson of Global Atlantic. She says it's an important lesson for those currently in the workforce to understand. "While older retirees are collecting income from employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as pensions, younger and future retirees may not receive the same benefits. Not only have pensions gradually become less common, but the data shows that younger retirees are also less likely to have much saved in other defined contribution plans, like 401(k)s," says Nelson.More than half of retirees wish they'd handled their financial planning differently, according to analysts. The top three regrets include not saving enough, relying too much on Social Security, and not paying down debt before retiring. 1758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community of Barrio Logan welcomed residents to shop in the streets after months of coronavirus’ impact. Saturday, Aug. 4, the “Walk the Block” event debuted. Local businesses got permits to move service outdoors to the sidewalk, and the event celebrated the community’s resurgence of business with food, specialty items and music.Business owners like Stephanie, who runs Dreamers and Hustlers Company, a clothing shop with items branded toward the namesake, said the past few months have been hard, but she’s confident Barrio Logan shops will bounce back.“Even during these times we figure out ways we can pick ourselves up and get going again,” she said.Edgar Flores said his shop, Maxa Market, sells products made by local small businesses and entrepreneurs. He’s been able to continue with online sales but said he’s excited to be restocking his storefront and welcoming back in-person customers.“It’s all about being a community, all the people getting together doing this, doing the walkabout,” he said.The Walk the Block event will occur every Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. on Logan Ave. between Chicano Park and 26th St. Masks and social distancing are required. 1200

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic, combined with a recently enacted state law, has created a new problem along San Diego's streets and boardwalks.Business owners say they're being overrun by vendors who set up makeshift stores and crowd sidewalks and walkways, while also luring customers out of long-established businesses."It's pretty much a free-for-all," says David McDaniel, the owner of Paradise Cove near Crystal Pier. "Anybody can sell anything, anywhere."He's partially correct. A new state law, Senate Bill 946, went into effect in 2018. Passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, it decriminalizes street vending, telling cities that they can create their own guidelines and can only enforce them with tickets for vendors who violate the rules, instead of criminal charges.Several cities in San Diego County, including Carlsbad and Vista, were quick to establish their regulations. San Diego still hasn't.As more vendors set up shop, the Pacific Beach Town Council is asking city leaders to move the process along."We're calling on city leaders to end the swap meet on our boardwalks now," says Brian White, the President of the Pacific Beach Town Council. "We have lots of pedestrian traffic, bicycles, skateboards. There really is no room for this type of vending activity."Earlier this month, the Town Council sent a letter to Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the City Council asking for specific rules.The San Diego City Council started to establish new rules for vendors in 2019. Faulconer sent a draft ordinance to the Economic Development Committee.It would have prohibited vendors on the boardwalk and other high traffic areas. It also would require business permits, set hours for vending, establish distances from public facilities, require vendors to follow health and safety rules, and several other rules.That ordinance passed the committee unanimously on July 25, 2019.The city then held three public forums about it in October. But it never went to the full council for approval."It is an issue that's becoming a real problem. We definitely need to get some regulations going with this," says City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, who represents Pacific Beach and Mission Beach."It's really up to the mayor's office to bring us these recommendations to City Council," says Campbell.ABC 10News reached out to Faulconer to see why there has been a delay in moving the draft ordinance forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The first thing Whitney Dickerson does when she gets home from work each evening is make a cup of her favorite tea.It's because her job as a veterinary technician can be stressful. "Everyday I go in and I don't know what's going to go through those doors," she said. "It could be a really emaciated animal with severe mange, it could be a really happy lab coming through."But Dickerson's angst doesn't end when her shift is over. She's living paycheck to paycheck, and has moved seven times in her six years in San Diego just to find a rent she can afford.COMPLETE COVERAGE: Making it in San DiegoShe's now splitting a two-bedroom apartment in Talmadge, which goes for ,874 a month. She's not sure how much more she'll be able to afford. "I feel like the city's slowly pushing me out," she said.Now, the rent's getting so high that it's near a tipping point for thousands of San Diegans. More than half of those who responded to a recent 10News Union-Tribune scientific poll said they'd seriously considered leaving California in the last year.  </p><p> The average rent is now ,887 a month, up 8 percent from a year earlier, according to Marketpointe Realty Advisors. And CoreLogic reports the median home price in the county is now about 0,000. "That's a problem for everybody, and I think everybody feels that," said Rick Gentry, who heads the San Diego Housing Commission, which oversees affordable housing in the city. </p><p><strong>HOW DID WE GET HERE?Gentry describes something of a perfect storm when it comes to housing in San Diego -1) There's not enough housing for the middle class.2) There aren't enough resources for low-income individuals.3) The current market has already swallowed up the glut of homes built during the housing bubble before the market crashed in 2008. "And that means the marketplace has gotten that much more expensive and that much tighter," Gentry said. "There's no place to move to."Gentry added turnover has declined drastically at the 3,400 affordable apartments the commission manages, and the section 8 voucher waiting list has ballooned to 80,000. Plus, San Diego County continues to grow with more jobs - employers added 27,000 new payroll positions in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, developers in the county only pulled permits for 10,000 new homes. "It takes a long, long time to get approvals for buildings to put new product online," said Mark Goldman, a real estate lecturer at San Diego State University. "There are more and more impact fees that makes it more expensive, there's a limited amount of land to do it."Goldman said it's a very complicated, risky business to start with a piece of vacant land and try to put a lot of housing on it.He said the amount of time that it takes given environmental review, regulations, and delays raises the cost of projects - to the point that some developers just drop it. WHAT WILL SOLVE THE CRISIS?There is movement in the works to spur development, including a region-wide plan to encourage development along transit routes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunday, doctors revealed President Donald Trump is taking a steroid, called Dexamethasone, as the latest medication for his coronavirus treatment."We just don't know what's going to happen next, things are very unpredictable," Dr. Christian Ramers, Chief of Population Health at Family Health Centers, said.Ramers has seen thousands of COVID-19 patients and says the disease has two phases, virus production and inflammatory. He said the shift generally happens seven to ten days in."Once things kind of shift, the damage actually comes more from the immune system's response than the virus itself," Ramers said, which is why a steroid like Dexamethasone is prescribed."Where it showed a decrease in mortality was in people who already required oxygen or if they were even sicker than that and were on ventilation," said Ramers, citing a study.Sunday, doctors stated the president received oxygen Friday before being taken to Walter Reed Medical Center, but said his oxygen levels only dipped to 94% and 93%. Normal levels are 95% and above.Ramers said studies show if you give the steroid too early or to someone who has a mild case, it could cause harm. "If you dial down the immune system too early or in a case that is really mild, you might have the opposite effect you're looking for," Ramers said.There's also a list of side effects."If you use them for a chronic basis or for more than a couple of days there is a long list of things it can cause. They can make your bones thinner, it can give you high blood sugar, diabetes, it can make people have trouble sleeping," Ramers said.With the president, as in any case, Ramers said we need to keep watching, "watching very carefully to what's happening day by day, it's going to be very important especially in this 7-10 day period because things could take a turn at any moment."Ramers said there are experimental coronavirus drug trials coming to San Diego, click here for more information or to sign up. 1988
