SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - One person was seriously hurt in an explosion during a cannabis oil extraction operation in the South Bay, police say. According to police, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at a house near the intersection of Lieder Drive and Green Bay Street. One person was severely burned and was rushed to the hospital as a result of the explosion. The person hasn't been identified and it's not immediately clear if any arrests are being made.  503

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A day-long technology fair promises to give senior citizens all the tools they need to stay up-to-date in the digital age.San Diego Oasis will host the tech fair at the Grossmont Center movie theaters on Tuesday, October 15."We're covering all areas of life," says Oasis CEO Simona Valanciute. "We want to show how technology can make it more fun, more safe and more connected."Classes at the fair will cover iPhone basics, podcasting, micro-mobility options, voice-enabled tech, cloud storage, identity theft, cord-cutting and more.Norma Mendenhall has taken a handful of iPhone classes at Oasis already. She says this kind of education is vital for her peers."As a senior, sitting at home, thinking that's not for me, I can't do that, I'm nervous about it, this is the place to take all of that doubt away," says Mendenhall.That advice is the same thing San Diego County officials want to spread. According to the County, there will be 1.2 million people above age 65 by the year 2030. Making sure they all are connected is key to keeping them safe."We've really never seen this kind of demographic shift," says Valanciute. "So, we all need to plan for this."The fair is free to anyone over 50, but San Diego Oasis wants people to register on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former longtime San Diego Zoo biologist has pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the iconic zoo.Matthew John Anderson, 49, of Ramona, Calif., admitted to stealing more than 6,000 through bogus vendor invoices between December 2008 and October 2016, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney Southern District of California.Investigators say Anderson created 35 fake invoices billing the San Diego Zoo for various payments from purported vendors. The zoo paid the invoices to third parties that then gave the bulk of the payment to Anderson. In some cases, the payments went directly to accounts controlled by Anderson.RELATED: Hillcrest store owner is getting her stolen jade Buddha statue backAnderson worked for more than 17 years for the zoo, starting as a research fellow and going on to serve as the Director of Behavioral Biology for the zoo's Conservation Research. He was fired in 2017.“When an employee is elevated to a position of leadership, it is a sign of that company’s trust in the integrity and honesty of that person,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Scott Brunner. “When an employee violates that trust and abuses their position to defraud and steal money for personal benefit, the FBI stands ready to hold them accountable.”Anderson has been charged with theft or conversion concerning programs receiving federal funds. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a 0,000 fine.He's scheduled to be sentenced on June 8. 1514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 13-year old girl, waiting for her mother to pick her up in Grant Hill, was attacked by a knife-wielding man Friday afternoon.San Diego Police are now using surveillance videos in their search for the suspect, who yanked a gold necklace from the teen's neck before making his getaway near the intersection of 26th and K Street.The girl wasn't hurt, but parents like Elizabeth Alvarado, whose twin 12-year-old daughters walk by that same spot each day, are hoping he doesn't strike again.Alvarado saw surveillance video after the principal of her daughters' school sent parents a link, suggesting they talk to their kids about staying safe.Andy Trakas of Albert Einstein Charter Middle School said the girl who was attacked wasn't one of his students, but there are several other schools in the neighborhood."We decided to be very, very proactive because the safety of our students," said Trakas, adding that all children in the community are a concern."These things can happen anywhere," Trakas said. "They can happen in La Jolla, they can happen in City Heights, they can happen in Del Sur or La Mesa, whatever, but, by being part of the community we can all work together to make sure that our eyes and ears are open so we can find out who this person is and make this place a better, safer community for our kids."Trakas suggested parents talk to their kids about being aware of their surroundings and the importance of staying in groups, not alone, after school. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 4-acre brush fire in Chula Vista highlighted a firefighting technique that's relatively rare throughout the state: nighttime aerial water drops.Once considered too dangerous to attempt, a handful of agencies in California now have the helicopters and equipment needed to handle night operations, including the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.San Diego Fire has been doing water drops using military-grade night vision goggles since 2005, said pilot Chris Hartnell. The agency expanded its night helicopter coverage countywide in late 2014.Only two helicopters in San Diego County have the capability to do night drops. Both were in use Wednesday when flames broke out near a riverbed just before 11 p.m. in the 2500 block of Faivre Street, near Hollister Street.CAL Fire does not currently operate firefighting helicopters at night anywhere in the state, although the agency has plans to purchase 12 new helicopters with that capability, said CAL Fire San Diego spokesman Thomas Shoots. The agency just received its first Firehawk helicopter this year and plans to put it into service in about a month, Shoots said. Two more helicopters should arrive before the end of the year, and the agency plans to acquire all 12 by 2021. 1256
