SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's no secret: exploring San Diego is a bit different amid county health orders and the COVID-19 pandemic. But there are still ways to explore safely! We're continuing our weekly look at fun around town with safety in mind. Here are four options for this weekend:Visit Old Town San Diego: While many of Old Town's smaller museums and shops remain closed, areas like the state park, Bazaar del Mundo, and nearby eateries are open for visitors. Businesses that have reopened are abiding by distancing, so guests can feel safe shopping in stores. The state park is also a great area to get some fresh air and distance. More infoCounty fair fun: The San Diego County Fair may be canceled this year, but the Del Mar Fairgrounds is continuing to highlight fair exhibits, foods, and more online and at the fairgrounds. Fair food vendors welcome guests Friday - Sunday throughout June for kettle corn, hot dogs, and more treats and the fair is hosting virtual exhibits showcasing student artwork, photography, and livestock shows. More infoHit the beach: San Diego County's beaches are open for laying out and relaxing, and parking lots, boardwalks, and piers have reopened. With warm temperatures lingering this week, it's the perfect time for a beach day. Just remember to wear a facial covering and practice distancing when near non-household members. More infoCheck out the San Diego Air and Space Museum: Balboa Park's first museum to reopen will be on Friday, as the San Diego Air and Space Museum welcomes guests with increased safety measures like stylus pens for hands-on exhibits, sanitation procedures, and distancing between guests. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to accelerate hiring and training of more border officer, National Guard members were deployed Tuesday to ports of entry along San Diego County's border with Mexico. In total, 24 National Guard troops joined Customs and Border Protection personnel at Port of San Diego, and ports of entry in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Tecate, and Calexico. They will not be taking part in any enforcement activities, according to CBP, instead, helping in surveillance support and operations. The deployed troops will not be armed.RELATED: Border Patrol officials discuss National Guard deployment to US-Mexico borderUp to 106 additional National Guard troops may be sent to the ports of entry in the coming weeks, CBP added."The contribution of the National Guard will undoubtedly improve our effectiveness at the ports of entry by enabling those officers to focus on enforcement activities," Pete Flores, CBP Director of field operations for San Diego, said. "We look forward to working collaboratively to further our national security mission."CBP says the additional troops will allow border personnel to focus on securing areas of the border against drug, weapons, and human smuggling. 1247

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many Black female voters in San Diego voters are celebrating Joe Biden’s decision to choose California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate.“This is a historic moment. I’m excited that I’m alive to see this happen,” said Ellen Nash, the chair of the San Diego chapter of the Black American Political Association of California.“All along that was the right choice,” Nash told ABC 10News. “I’m honored that she’s there to represent Black women and the Black vote. For Joe Biden to honor us by selecting her as his VP is the greatest historic moment.”Many Black voters wrote to Biden, urging him to choose Harris.Nash said having Harris as the first Black and Asian American woman to appear on a major party’s presidential ticket gives women of color a voice.“It was just a moment of relaxation and celebration,” said Nash. “She is prepared, skilled, and credentialed.”But does this choice possible boost Biden’s chances of winning this election? Dr. Kyra Greene, the executive director at the Center on Policy Initiatives, said Harris would bring new life to this race while appealing to a wide range of voters.“She’s young enough to attract young folks but old enough to show experience and to be taken seriously,” said Greene. “I think it will help with women who were disappointed not to see other women advance further in this race, and I also think it will help with Black voters.”“I think Senator Harris speaks to people who are interested in change because she herself has gone through an evolution on these issues,” she said.Greene said the decision not only makes history but will reenergize some of the most politically engaged San Diegans. 1678

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not unusual to collect Christmas decorations year-round, but using them to cover every inch of a late model Dodge Caravan is pretty unique. He's known to many as the "Christmas Man of San Diego," whose van conversion continues to turn heads and spark smiles — no matter the season or social distance."He's a trans-dimensional emperor of over a google-plex of universes," said Larry Bogaert, as he stands with his pet parrot, Emerald Eagle, on his forearm. "I'm his Prime Minister and his daddy."In his mid-60s, Bogaert is a man with a big imagination who loves to share tales, turning his late-model Dodge Caravan into a storytelling canvas."I have Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker Bell and the Boys going to Never Never Land," Bogaert shares.Almost every square inch of his vehicle features his own hand-drawn depictions of famed children's stories, mostly from English literature."And then I have Fezziwig's warehouse here," Bogaert says, pointing to various images on the car. "If you remember Scrooge did his apprenticeship at Fezziwig's.""For some things, I have a plan in mind, but other things as I buy things or acquire things you think, Oh, I can use that on the castle," Bogaert says, pointing to the roof of the vehicle which is covered by a towering display of church-like spires and angels. The hood is plastered with its own 3-D display of a miniature snow-covered town. And the sides of the van are covered in paint pen drawings all by his hand. The vehicle is a head turner and as we talk to Bogaert a couple of bicyclists stop to take pictures. Bogaert waves: "Thanks!" he says, before turning back to our camera, "99.9% of the time people give me the thumbs up. I've even had cops drive by and give me the thumbs up."Though, Bogaert admits there have been a few tickets over the years concerning visibility issues. But the former bus driver insists he's very good at using his side mirrors. Besides that, his inspiring creation has proven a good defense."One time the judge threw it out of court because she said her kids loved my car. She said case dismissed," he recalls.Another woman stops by on foot, "I like it. I think it's a positive message and we certainly need that now more than ever."Uncertain times for many, and Bogaert can relate to the feeling."With the coronavirus going on you should see how many people cheer my car because it's just something uplifting during these times," says Bogaert. "I like to be optimistic with the car. I like to be optimistic for myself if I can be. But I do get depressed."Underneath a kaleidoscope of ornaments inside the van, there is a snug space, where Bogaert sleeps, as — for the moment — this is his home."I bought a grocery store up in Crescent City. I always wanted to live in the redwoods," Bogaert said.He says that business venture years ago didn't go as planned, and the financial ramifications remain. But he doesn't dwell, as he focuses attention on another part of the van. After all, he and Emerald Eagle have a "google-plex of universes" to run. And they are, apparently, ever-expanding."I am adding more towers and a few more parts to it. I have some stuff inside that will go on in the next week or few days," said Bogaert. 3229

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Intense heat is sparking fires and sending San Diegans to the coast seeking relief."The temperatures today are pretty extreme," Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said, adding the brush is dry from the heat and lack of rain making Wednesday's forecasted record heat very dangerous.A brush fire sparked in Ramona near Ramona St. and Boundary Ave around 11 a.m.The triple-digit heat causing concern for Fire Chief Jason Lambirth with the U.S. Forest Service, "we really take care of our own people, keep a close eye on them, make sure they're hydrated with water and Gatorade and go from there."Firefighters kept the blaze within a couple of acres, according to Shoots.A huge relief to neighbors, like Leanne Plunkett who has lived in Ramona for 44 years. "Oh I'm relaxed now, but it was pretty hectic for a while!" Plunkett said. She was stepping into the shower when law enforcement knocked on their door to issue evacuation orders. Plunkett said she jumped out, threw on clothes, and started packing jewelry and important documents. She said they had to evacuate twice in the past, including the Cedar Fire. The heat taking its toll on San Diegans across the county. Many, like Oscar Fuentes from El Cajon, headed to the beach."It was starting to get to 110 degrees out there so we decided to hit the beach... It's a lot more tolerable that's for sure it's really nice, I expect it's going to be a lot better when we get in that water."He's not alone according to Sgt. Lonnie Stephens with San Diego Fire Rescue's Lifeguard Division."We're still seeing elevated beach crowds on the weekends and during the weekdays." He said normally crowds dissipate after Labor Day but that hasn't happened yet."Throughout this heat, which has been ongoing for quite some time, yes we have had some citizens that have had some heat-related illness." He said it's important to wear loose-fitting clothing, drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and stay in the shade when possible. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect until Thursday night. 2045
