Instead, if you’re still planning to see family, it’s more likely that this is the year you find yourself staying at a hotel or vacation rental.Here’s why you should take advantage of this one silver lining in what most people agree has been a crummy year for traveling and seeing family.You’ll have better quality timeTwenty percent of respondents in SWNS Media Group’s 2019 survey said getting on each other’s nerves was a top concern when it comes to staying with family during the holidays. More time together means more opportunities to get annoyed and allow tense topics to creep up: the election, the pandemic, the economy, healthcare … and the list goes on.According to the Centers for Disease Control COVID-19 guidelines, gatherings that last longer pose more risk than shorter gatherings. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)— The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is looking for a mother of two accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her children’s school. Last week, the department’s financial crimes division issued a public warrant for 30-year-old Kaitlyn Faith Birchman for felony embezzlement.Birchman was the President of the Imperial Beach Charter School’s PTA, until she was voted off the board in March. Months before, board members said they began noticing a lack of funds.“There were thousands of dollars that hadn’t been paid,” current PTA treasurer Elizabeth McKay said. McKay told 10News, she began connecting the dots last year when vendors from previous years continued to bill the PTA saying they hadn’t gotten paid. That’s when McKay, a former Coronado Police Department Sergeant began investigating. When she contacted the bank, they told her their account no longer existed. "We were very lucky that the bank was willing to work with us to put together a paper trail,” McKay said. “The checks she had written to herself and signed herself. ATM withdrawals that weren't anywhere near Imperial beach or had anything to do with a PTA event."In March, the board confronted Birchman. They had a Sheriff’s Deputy come to the board meeting to explain exactly what “embezzlement” meant."She [Birchman] said that it was just a misunderstanding,” McKay said. “It was a lot of blind faith that they thought if she says everything is okay, then everything must be okay."At the end of the meeting, Birchman was removed from the Board.Now the Sheriff’s department is looking for the woman they said stole directly from kids, forcing the PTA to cancel students field trips and special events. “I want her to think about her own kids. She needs to at this point, make things right by taking responsibility of her actions,” McKay said. “That's the best lesson that she can teach her own children. And to make herself a better person from here."Birchman’s children no longer attend Imperial Beach Charter school. McKay said with the generous support of the community and a large donation from General Mills Box Tops, this school year, the PTA is financially stable again. Now, more people are turning to surgery centers for a lower cost.Sandi Bowen is one of those people.Something as simple as picking out a shirt is more challenging for Bowen than she ever thought it'd be. On Easter, she found a lump in her breast. Doctors told her it was cancer."It was very very very confusing," Bowen says. "It still is. It brings tears to my eyes, because I don't understand how I got it."Instead of a lumpectomy, she decided to remove her entire breast. And instead of going to a hospital for breast reconstruction, Bowen opted for the Kaiser Permanente Ambulatory Surgery Center, where she got the surgery. In less than 24 hours, she was back home recovering.  "I felt very special," Bowen says. "They were there every time I moved. They came in and talked to me, even goofed around with me."Dr. Mike Sawyer, the director at the center, says they've worked hard to address concerns regarding patient care."If it's a patient that just needs physicians to kind of come to the bedside, and maybe we have to have some kind of intervention, we're able to do that because are here and we are present," Dr. Sawyer says. "On site, as they say. If it's really something that requires a higher level of care, that again allows us to do a pretty quick transfer process over to one of our partner hospitals."Compared with hospitals, Kaiser Permanente says its patients are seeing an average cost savings of 30 percent on their procedures. It can be anything from simple orthopedic procedure to joint procedures.However, Dr. Sawyer says there are important questions you need to ask before determining if a surgery center is the best option for you."Does your physician feel comfortable with this operation there?" Dr. Sawyer says. "Have you and your physician discussed all the ramifications of that procedure? And then what sort of plans does that ambulatory surgery center have if you were required a higher level of care?" 2037

(KGTV) — Imperial Beach is closing off traffic in front of the IB Pier in order to help businesses and restaurants utilize more space for social distancing.The city says Seacoast Drive, from Date Avenue to Elder Ave., will be closed to motorists from Saturday to Monday so that not only residents can social distance, but nearby retail stores and restaurants can get creative with spacing."With many businesses able to reopen to customers, we will see some 'out of the box' thinking from our businesses to maximize their area to increase spacial distancing," the city wrote on Facebook.RELATED:Pacific Beach's El Prez shut down for violating health ordersWhat to know: Changes at beaches, restaurants this Memorial Day weekendWith many retail stores and restaurants reopened this Memorial Day weekend, local cities expect more residents to head outdoors.While restaurants have been allowed to reopen under county guidelines, some establishments may see the county force them to close if they do not meet protocols. Hoverboards are once again the target for recalls, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued recalls Tuesday on seven models for potential fire hazard. According to the CPSC, the seven recalled hoverboard models have lithium-ion battery packs that can overheat, posing a risk of smoking, catching fire and/or exploding.Nearly 13,000 units are covered by Tuesday's recall.
